A comparison of the extent of resection in pineal region tumours via the occipital transtentorial and supracerebellar infratentorial approaches.

PURPOSE: To perform a single unit review of surgical approaches to the pineal region, looking to ascertain if trends were identifiable regarding the extent of resection and the rate of post-operative complications between approaches. We hypothesised that each approach would offer different exposure of the pineal region which may result in poor access to certain areas of the tumour. This may lead to residual tumour in reliable and predictable locations, and an awareness of these regions could help with pre-operative planning and lead to higher levels of suspicion when inspecting these regions i

Does dominance of crossing retinal ganglion cells make the eyes cross? The temporal retina in the origin of infantile esotropia – a neuroanatomical and evolutionary analysis.

A closer look at the evolution of the eye and the brain provides a possible explanation for both the origin of infantile esotropia and its motor characteristics. In the course of evolution, the eyes have moved from a lateral to a frontal position. Consequently, the monocular visual fields started to overlap resulting in a binocular visual field. In lateral-eyed animals, the retinae project to the contralateral visual cortices only. These projections are also found in binocular mammals and birds with binocular visual fields but in addition there are uncrossed projections from the temporal retin

Controlled scanpath variation alters fusiform face activation.

We investigated the influence of experimentally guided saccades and fixations on fMRI activation in brain regions specialized for face and object processing. Subjects viewed a static image of a face while a small fixation cross made a discrete jump within the image every 500 ms. Subjects were required to make a saccade and fixate the cross at its new location. Each run consisted of alternating blocks in which the subject was guided to make a series of saccades and fixations that constituted either a Typical or an Atypical face scanpath. Typical scanpaths were defined as a scanpath in which the

Posterior cranial fossa gangliogliomas.

Ganglioglioma (GG) is an uncommon primary lesion of the central nervous system that is typically located supratentorially. There are only a few reports of GG arising from the cerebellum. To the best of our knowledge this is the first case of a cerebellar GG with supratentorial extension and a longstanding history before its recognition. In fact, this 29-year-old male presented with an 11-year history of intermittent headaches. A cranial computerized tomography (CT) performed at the onset of his complaints failed to reveal the tumor. After a particularly longstanding cephalalgic episode, the pa

SIRT1 activation confers neuroprotection in experimental optic neuritis.

PURPOSE: Axonal damage and loss of neurons correlate with permanent vision loss and neurologic disability in patients with optic neuritis and multiple sclerosis (MS). Current therapies involve immunomodulation, with limited effects on neuronal damage. The authors examined potential neuroprotective effects in optic neuritis by SRT647 and SRT501, two structurally and mechanistically distinct activators of SIRT1, an enzyme involved in cellular stress resistance and survival. METHODS: Experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE), an animal model of MS, was induced by immunization with proteoli

Local cerebral blood flow during and after bilateral carotid artery occlusion in unanesthetized gerbils.

Using [14C]iodoantipyrine autoradiography, we measured regional cerebral blood flow in unanesthetized gerbils subjected to 2 (n = 5) or 30 (n = 6) minutes of bilateral carotid artery occlusion or 5 (n = 6), 30 (n = 6), or 120 (n = 5) minutes of reflow after 30 minutes of occlusion. Blood pressure, respiratory rate, and blood gases were recorded, and these and other gerbils were evaluated with periodic neurologic examinations. Blood flow to structures above the level of the diencephalon ceased almost totally during occlusion. The lateral thalamus, the rostral three quarters of the hypothalamus,

An attention-demanding hunting paradigm engages the superior colliculus-zona incerta circuit mediating analgesia in male mice.

Attention distraction mitigates pain, yet its neural basis remains elusive. We established cricket hunting as an attention-demanding paradigm that alleviates acute and chronic pain in male mice. Activity tagging revealed that cricket hunting activated a subset of glutamatergic neurons in the superior colliculus (SC). Selective stimulation of these hunting-activated neurons alleviated chronic hyperalgesia, primarily mediated by their projections to the zona incerta (ZI). Notably, repeated engagement, either through the hunting paradigm or by repeatedly activating hunting-activated SC-ZI project

Retinal ganglion cell loss and gliosis in the retinofugal projection following intravitreal exposure to amyloid-beta.

Pathological accumulations of amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptide are found in retina early in Alzheimer's disease, yet its effects on retinal neuronal structure remain unknown. To investigate this, we injected fibrillized Aβ1-42 protein into the eye of adult C57BL/6 J mice and analyzed the retina, optic nerve (ON), and the superior colliculus (SC), the primary retinal target in mice. We found that retinal Aβ exposure stimulated microglial activation and retinal ganglion cell (RGC) loss as early as 1-week post-injection. Pathology was not limited to the retina, but propagated into other areas of the cen

The segmentation of the posterior cerebral artery: a microsurgical anatomic study.

There are still different descriptions of the segmentation of the posterior cerebral artery, although there is a radiological and anatomical consensus on the segmentation of the anterior and the middle cerebral artery. This study aims to define the most appropriate localization for origin and end points of the segments through reviewing the segmentation of the posterior cerebral artery. The segments and the cortical branches originating from those segments of the 40 posterior cerebral arteries of 20 cadaver brains were examined under operating microscope. In this research, the P1, P2, P3, P4,

Dopaminergic projections of the subparafascicular thalamic nucleus to the auditory brainstem.

Neuromodulators can alter the response properties of sensory neurons, including those in the auditory system. Dopamine, which plays a major role in reward and movement, has been shown to alter neural responses in the auditory brainstem and midbrain. Recently we identified the subparafascicular thalamic nucleus (SPF), part of the A11 dopaminergic cell group, as the source of dopamine to the inferior colliculus (IC). The superior olivary complex (SOC) is also a likely target of dopaminergic projections from the SPF because it receives projections from the SPF and contains fibers and terminals im

Arm movements induced by electrical microstimulation in the superior colliculus of the macaque monkey.

Neuronal activity in the deep layers of the macaque (Macaca mulatta) superior colliculus (SC) and the underlying reticular formation is correlated with the initiation and execution of arm movements (Werner, 1993). Although the correlation of this activity with EMGs of proximal arm muscles is as strong as in motor cortex (Werner et al., 1997a; Stuphorn et al., 1999), little is known about the influence of electrical microstimulation in the SC on the initiation and trajectories of arm movements. Our experiments on three macaque monkeys clearly show that arm movements can be elicited by electrica

Characterization of transgenic zebrafish lines that express GFP in the retina, pineal gland, olfactory bulb, hatching gland, and optic tectum.

Transgenic animals are powerful tools to study gene function invivo. Here we characterize several transgenic zebrafish lines that express green fluorescent protein (GFP) under the control of the LCR(RH2)-RH2-1 or LCR(RH2)-RH2-2 green opsin regulatory elements. Using confocal immunomicroscopy, stereo-fluorescence microscopy, and Western blotting, we show that the Tg(LCR(RH2)-RH2-1:GFP)(pt112) and Tg(LCR(RH2)-RH2-2:GFP)(pt115) transgenic zebrafish lines express GFP in the pineal gland and certain types of photoreceptors. In addition, some of these lines also express GFP in the hatching gland, op

Eye position effects in saccadic adaptation.

Saccades are used by the visual system to explore visual space with the high accuracy of the fovea. The visual error after the saccade is used to adapt the control of subsequent eye movements of the same amplitude and direction in order to keep saccades accurate. Saccadic adaptation is thus specific to saccade amplitude and direction. In the present study we show that saccadic adaptation is also specific to the initial position of the eye in the orbit. This is useful, because saccades are normally accompanied by head movements and the control of combined head and eye movements depends on eye p

Nuclear parcellation of certain immunohistochemically identifiable neuronal systems in the midbrain and pons of the Highveld molerat (Cryptomys hottentotus).

The present paper details our findings following immunohistochemical examination of the midbrain and pons of the Highveld molerat (Cryptomys hottentotus) using antibodies for vesicular acetylcholine transporter (cholinergic neurons), tyrosine hydroxylase (dopaminergic and noradrenergic neurons), and serotonin (serotonergic neurons). The aim was to see if, in this microphthalmic rodent that lacks a distinct circadian rhythm, the nuclei involved in aspects of visual processing and the sleep-wake cycle exhibited specific loss or morphological alteration. For all of the neural systems investigated

Spontaneous regeneration of severed optic axons restores mapped visual responses to the adult rat superior colliculus.

To test whether a spontaneous and functional regeneration of severed axons could occur within the adult mammalian central nervous system, a long-term recovery of microelectrode-mapped visual response was sought in the superior colliculus (SC) after its total or near-total abolition by a precise guillotine cut of the retinocollicular pathway. Recoveries were found 3 weeks or later in 15 of the 36 animals studied; in 10 of these recoveries, half or more of the width of the SC was involved. The recovered responses were often activated from within a normally small area of the visual field. Appropr

Loss and subsequent recovery of local cerebral glucose use in visual targets after controlled optic nerve crush in adult rats.

A mild crush of the adult rat optic nerve serves as a model to study the restoration of function after traumatic brain injury. It causes a progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells, but visually guided behavior is partially restored within 2-3 weeks. The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent local cerebral glucose use (LCGU) decreases and if it recovers in retinofugal targets following unilateral optic nerve crush. At intervals of 2, 9, and 22 days after crush, LCGU was monitored in rats in which the visual system was stimulated by a strobe-light and pattern. In the ip

DiI tracing in combination with immunocytochemistry for analysis of connectivities and chemoarchitectonics of specific neural systems in a teleost, the Atlantic salmon.

An important goal in neuroanatomical research is to identify the neurotransmitters in specific neural pathways. One step towards this goal is to combine experimental neuronal tracing with immunocytochemistry. Unfortunately, optimal procedures for nerve tracing and immunocytochemistry are not always compatible. Carbocyanine compounds have recently been shown to be efficient tracers both in vivo and in paraformaldehyde-prefixed neural tissue. The possibility to apply them to prefixed tissue make them suitable for tracing of neural pathways that are not easily accessible in vivo. We have optimize

Tumour necrosis factor causes an increase in axonal transport of protein and demyelination in the mouse optic nerve.

An increase in fast axonal transport of protein by the optic nerve was found in mice following a single combined injection of human recombinant tumour necrosis factor alpha (rTNF) and [3H]proline into the vitreous chamber. Demyelination was observed in optic nerve fibres arising from the eyes of mice which received a single rTNF injection. No such changes were detected when heat-inactivated rTNF was injected with the label. The effects of intravitreal injection of rTNF on the pathophysiology of mouse optic nerve resembled those found in mice infected with Semliki Forest virus (SFV), an animal

Effects of morphine and midazolam on reactivity to peripheral noxious and central aversive stimuli.

Electrical stimulation of the mesencephalic tectum elicits behavioral and autonomic responses similar to those following peripheral noxious stimulation. Benzodiazepine and opioid compounds attenuate escape behavior induced by electrical stimulation of the dorsal periaqueductal gray (PAG) and deep layers of the superior colliculus (SC). The present study determines if microinjections of midazolam and morphine applied to these PAG-SC sites affect both responsiveness to peripheral noxious stimulation and to aversive PAG-SC stimulation. Both aversive brain stimulation or foot-shocks applied at thr
