BACKGROUND: Surgical site infections (SSI) in skin surgery are rare but can cause significant patient discomfort and increase treatment costs.
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the incidence and risk factors of SSIs in outpatient dermatologic and plastic surgeries and to highlight effective prevention strategies.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart review of outpatient performed procedures between 2012 and 2024. The inclusion criteria were Class I (clean) and Class II (clean-contaminated) surgeries, which required wound approximation.
RESULTS: Among the 8,742 procedures performed during the st

An infection that develops after plastic or reconstructive surgery is one of the most common and difficult consequences to deal with. In addition to compromising functional recovery and cosmetic outcomes, these infections can greatly lengthen hospital stays, raise patient morbidity, and slow wound healing. Infection risk in plastic surgery is complex and multifaceted, necessitating an all-encompassing and preventative strategy. Strict aseptic surgical procedures, perioperative antibiotic prophylaxis based on procedure type and patient risk profile, and comprehensive preoperative skin preparati

Background/Objectives: Fibroproliferative disorders (FPDs), such as Dupuytren's contracture, scleroderma, capsular contracture, rhinophyma, and keloid scars, are characterised by excessive fibroblast activity and collagen deposition. These conditions are frequently encountered in plastic and reconstructive surgery and remain therapeutically challenging. Cyclooxygenase (COX) inhibitors have emerged as a potential adjunct therapy to modulate fibrotic pathways and improve clinical outcomes. This systematic review aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety profile of COX inhibitors in the management

Squamous cell carcinomas are the most common malignancies in the oral cavity, pharynx, and larynx. Even in the age of the most modern drug treatment methods, radical resection of these tumors is and currently remains the therapeutic gold standard. The loss of anatomical structures associated with surgery inevitably increases the functional deficits caused by the tumor itself. In this context, the extent of functional deficits is largely determined by the extent of resection. Complete organ resections, such as glossectomy, complete palate resection, laryngectomy, or transverse pharyngo-laryngec

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has led to an unforeseen surge in demand for facial plastic surgery (FPS). The objective of this study was to survey patients who pursued cosmetic FPS during COVID-19 to better understand how changes in lifestyle, digital media usage, and their facial self-image influenced their decision to pursue surgery.
METHODS: A web-based survey was sent to 150 patients who had undergone FPS at an outpatient clinic between May 1 and July 30, 2020. Questions included changes in patients' lifestyle habits, use of video conferencing and social med

Introduction: Plastic surgeons are more likely to face medical litigation, compared to other specialists. Although this has been previously studied in other countries, there is a paucity of data regarding legal medical cases within Canada. The goal of this study was to compile and analyze all medical litigations in plastic surgery in Canada and identify themes associated them. Methods: A systematic search of the 2 largest Canadian online legal databases, LexisNexis Canada and WestLawNext Canada, was conducted to retrieve all legal medical cases against plastic surgeons in Canadian courts. The facial plastic surgeon faces increasing competition in the aesthetic world for both surgical and nonsurgical services. Incorporating nonsurgical options in practice, such as "liquid facelifts," aesthetic services, and products, increases both patient satisfaction and office revenue stream. A successful nonsurgical practice can be built with minimal expense by focusing on the most critical and popular options to offer patients.

BACKGROUND: Wound complications, including dehiscence and surgical site infections, following spinal surgery have the potential to be devastating both to the patient and to the hospital system. Complications can occur in a wide range of patients including diabetics, those of low or high BMI and those of old age. Obese patients and those with increased subcutaneous fat are at particularly high risk for wound complications, which may be mitigated through use of local flap reconstruction by a Plastic Surgeon.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 28 year-old female with morbid obesity presents with multiple lumba

Complications in facial plastic surgery can occur in both surgical and nonsurgical procedures. Many complications can be prevented through thorough preprocedural evaluation, patient counseling, and close postoperative monitoring. Despite the best efforts complications will happen and identifying them early is critical to prevent long-term sequelae. It is important to know how to both manage the complication and guide the patient through the recovery process.

BACKGROUND: There is an emerging interest in global surgery. The Lancet Commission on Global Surgery recognizes the important role that nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) play in the delivery of cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) surgical care. To better address the unmet burden of surgical disease, the commissioners propose the use of a centralized registry to maximize coordination of global surgical volunteerism efforts. This study aims to create a comprehensive database of CLP organizations.
METHODS: A systematic search of the following resources was conducted: The Plastic Surgery Foundation,
