Severe bradycardia and asystole in a dog after intravenous metoclopramide injection.

A 5-month-old English Bulldog with a history of clinically resolved bronchopneumonia was admitted for a computed tomography scan and corrective surgery for brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome. The day of imaging and surgery, the dog did not show any signs of cardiovascular abnormalities. The dog was premedicated intravenously (IV) with maropitant (1 mg kg-1), pantoprazole (1 mg kg-1) and acepromazine (20 μg kg-1). Anaesthesia was induced with alfaxalone (2 mg kg-1) IV after 5 minutes of preoxygenation, and anaesthesia was maintained with isoflurane in oxygen [inspired fraction (FIO2) =1

Pelvic Endoprosthesis after Hemipelvectomy Using a 3D-Printed Osteotomy Guide for Infiltrative Osteoma in a Cat.

With the development of 3D printing and surgical techniques, various defect reconstruction methods after tumor resection have been applied not only in humans but also in veterinary medicine. This report describes a case of reconstruction after hemipelvectomy for an osteoma in a cat using a 3D-printed pelvic endoprosthesis and micro total hip replacement (mTHR). A 5-year-old spayed female Turkish Angora cat was referred for a 1-month history of constipation and intermittent weight-bearing lameness in the left hindlimb. An osteoma in the pelvis measuring 4.5 × 3 × 5.4 cm was identified based on

Negative pressure wound therapy over two ipsilateral external skeletal fixators for management of high grade open fractures in a cat.

CASE SUMMARY: A 7-month-old female neutered Bengal cat was referred to the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals following unknown trauma. Clinical and radiographic examination revealed a grade IIIB open, comminuted, mid-diaphyseal fracture of the left tibia and fibula, and grade IIIB open mid-diaphyseal fractures of the left metatarsals II-V. The fractures were stabilised with tibial and metatarsal external skeletal fixators. The open wounds were initially debrided surgically using conventional dressings, resulting in a small amount of circumferential granulation tissue formation by 10 days posto

Ability of a Complexity Scoring System to Predict Veterinary Student Surgical Procedure and Clinic Duration.

The Midwestern University College of Veterinary Medicine hosts student-run free clinics that offer surgical sterilization of male and female dogs and cats, with the goal of 20 surgical cases per clinic. Surgical complexity varies significantly between the surgical procedures for males (castration) and females (ovariohysterectomy) and is also influenced by weight and age for dogs. A surgical complexity scoring system was implemented to ensure the minimum number of patients while providing a diverse mix of cases. The aim of this study was to determine whether the surgical complexity scoring syst

Intestinal surgery in small animals: historical foundations, current thinking, and future horizons.

Intestinal wounds require precise closure after intestinal biopsy, enterotomy, or enterectomy in small animals. Preexisting factors such as intra-abdominal sepsis and hypoalbuminemia as well as poor surgical technique increase the risk of intestinal dehiscence, with considerable negative impact on patient morbidity and mortality. Live dog studies have demonstrated the dangers of mucosal eversion especially in the septic abdomen. Approximating patterns preserve luminal diameter, heal optimally, and have equal bursting strength compared with inverting patterns after 24 hours. Simple interrupted

Lipomatosis of the parotid salivary gland: 2 case reports and review of the literature on fat-containing salivary gland lesions.

Two cases of lipomatosis of the parotid salivary gland in two dogs are reported. Both dogs were presented with a slow growing unilateral non-painful mass in the parotid region. The mass measured 12 and 15 cm on the longest axis for case 1 and 2 respectively. Initial incisional biopsies were suggestive of infiltrative lipoma or salivary gland adenocarcinoma. Case 2 underwent head radiographs that showed a soft tissue opacity on the area of the right parotid gland followed by a computed tomography that showed a multi-lobulated infiltrative mass occupying the right parotid gland. Both cases under

[Inappropriate lactation syndrome in goats--case collection and experiences with mastectomy].

OBJECTIVE: Hobby keeping of goats and sheep confronts veterinarians with new challenges that rarely have to be faced in livestock husbandry. During the last five years five goats were presented to the Clinic for Animal Reproduction, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Freie Universität Berlin, Germany, with inappropriate lactation syndrome. Four of these animals had been previously treated with cabergoline without enduring success. According to the request of the owners (informed consent) and the clinical severity of the cases, a mastectomy was performed in all five animals. MATERIAL AND METHODS:

Surgically produced congenital diaphragmatic hernia in fetal rabbits.

Animal models of congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) still are indispensable for the evolution of knowledge related to this disease and to fetal surgery in general. The lamb has provided the most reliable experimental design thus far. Considering the possible advantages of using rabbits (rather than lambs) namely lower costs, no need of special veterinary facilities, smaller body size, year-round availability, higher number of fetuses per pregnancy, and shorter gestational period, a successful model of CDH was developed in fetal rabbits. Sixteen pregnant New Zealand rabbits underwent hystero

Perioperative management of septic peritonitis in small animals: A review.

BACKGROUND: Septic peritonitis (SP) is a complex, life-threatening disease, driven by peritoneal inflammation and microbial contamination, requiring timely and dynamic perioperative management. AIMS: The aim of this review was to synthesize current knowledge on the perioperative management of SP in dogs and cats. CONCLUSIONS: Evidence-based strategies for initial stabilization include fluid resuscitation with balanced crystalloids, asopressors, and antimicrobial therapy targeting polymicrobial infections. Anesthetic management should prioritize hemodynamic stability and a multimodal approach

Bladder duplication in the male cat: the first case report in China.

BACKGROUND: Bladder duplication is a rare congenital lower urinary tract anomaly disease characterized by the presence of two bladders, possibly with duplication of the urethra. This disease is rarely reported in cats. The clinical symptoms are commonly occult, with increased difficulty in making a definitive diagnosis, especially if there is no obvious urethral duplication. The diagnosis is typically based on radiographs and ultrasound, with computer tomography serving as a more advanced imaging diagnostic modality. Cases of duplicated bladders with accessory tubular tissues are even scarcer

Case Report: A New Geographic Area for the Presence of the Zoonotic Ocular Nematode, Onchocerca lupi in Romania.

INTRODUCTION: Onchocerca lupi is a zoonotic parasite of carnivores reported in countries from Europe, North America, Asia and Africa. In Romania, canine ocular onchocercosis was first reported in dogs in 2016 from Târgovişte (Dâmboviţa County) and Oneşti (Bacău County) and more recently, it was detected in an adult stray dog exported to UK from an unspecified location in Romania. METHODS: A 4-years old male mongrel dog was referred to a private veterinary clinic in Năvodari (Constanţa County), Romania due to ocular disorders. The dog was originally from a public dog shelter in Balş (Olt Count

Arteriovenous Malformation of the Tongue Resulting in Recurrent Severe Hemorrhage in a Young Dog.

An 8 mo old male entire beagle was presented to the emergency and critical care service following several severe bleeding episodes from the oral cavity. Oral examination revealed a purple, spongy, pulsatile lesion on the rostral two-thirds of the tongue. Computed tomography angiography revealed a severely distended right linguofacial vein with numerous, tortuous branching vessels within the tongue, consistent with an arteriovenous (AV) malformation. A cervical surgical approach was performed, and the right lingual artery was isolated and catheterized. A direct arteriogram confirmed this was th

Giant cutaneous cyst in a dog infected by Cercopithifilaria bainae.

Cercopithifilaria bainae is the most prevalent species of filarioids within the genus. This parasite localizes in the skin, sometimes causing erythematous dermatitis. Herein, the authors describe a case of giant cutaneous cyst in a dog infected by Cercopithifilaria bainae. A 9-year-old male mixed-breed dog presented to a veterinary facility in Dourados, Mato Grosso do Sul (Midwest Brazil) with a mass in the lumbosacral region. On clinical examination, the mass was observed to be approximately 15 cm in diameter with a floating consistency and conspicuous presence of viscous fluid; the lesion, h

Unilateral absence of the right pulmonary artery with associated aortopulmonary collaterals and bullous lung lesions in a dog.

This case report describes a combination of congenital cardiopulmonary abnormalities found in a 1-year-old Labrador Retriever. To the authors' knowledge this combination of cardiopulmonary abnormalities has not been previously reported in veterinary medicine. Unilateral absence of the right pulmonary artery associated with unilateral right-sided aortopulmonary collaterals was observed. These aortopulmonary collaterals preserved the blood supply to the right lung lobes but led to left ventricular volume overload. There was also evidence of severe bullous lung disease in the right lung, which wa

Dystocia and fetotomy associated with cerebral aplasia in a greater one-horned rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis).

The captive greater one-horned rhinoceros population consists of 176 animals. Since 1971, a total of 226 calves were born into this captive population. However, 24% of the offspring born were either stillborn or did not survive the first 3 months. The causes for this high rate of stillbirth and neonate mortality have not yet been documented. Here, we report on the veterinary management of a dystocia and foetotomy resulting from a malpositioned greater one-horned rhinoceros foetus. The dead foetus presented with a forelimb flexed at the shoulder joint, with all other joints extended. The foetus
