Effects of Inter-Set Rest Intervals on Swallowing Pressure and Submental Muscle Activation During Effortful Swallowing Exercise in Older Adults.

This study investigated the effects of rest intervals between sets during effortful swallowing (ES) exercise on swallowing pressure and submental muscle activation in healthy older adults. A within-subject crossover design was employed with 57 healthy older adults (mean age, 76.2 ± 4.9 years). Participants performed ES exercises under two conditions: 0-min rest (50 continuous repetitions) and 3-min rest (five sets of 10 repetitions with 3-min rest intervals). ES pressure was measured using the Iowa Oral Performance Instrument at the posterior oral tongue position and expressed as a percentage

Compensatory Swallowing Strategies Recommended in Oncology Practice: Practice Patterns and Relationship to Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) Grades.

Compensatory swallow strategies are recommended to improve swallow safety and efficiency; however, there is limited evidence on use in specific populations or their relationship to swallow study results. We sought to describe/explore strategy recommendations in an oncology practice and their relationship to Dynamic Imaging Grade of Swallowing Toxicity (DIGEST) grades as a marker of clinical utility of the tool. This is a sub-study of a STARI-guided retrospective implementation evaluation at a single comprehensive cancer center. Electronic health record databases were queried to sample all modi

Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) nesting on wetlands impacted by oil sands mining are highly parasitized by the bird blow fly Protocalliphora spp.

Oil sands mining is steadily expanding in Alberta, Canada. Major companies are planning reclamation strategies for mine tailings, in which wetlands will be used for the bioremediation of water and sediments contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and naphthenic acids during the extraction process. A series of experimental wetlands were built on companies' leases to assess the feasibility of this approach, and tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) were designated as upper trophic biological sentinels. From May to July 2004, prevalence and intensity of infestation with bird blow flies P

Towards Non-Invasive Swallowing Assessment: an AI-Powered Interface for Swallowing Kinematic Analysis using High-Resolution Cervical Auscultation.

Swallowing is a pivotal physiological function for human sustenance and hydration. Dysfunctions, termed dysphagia, necessitate prompt and precise diagnosis. Videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS) remain the gold standard for swallowing assessment but pose accessibility and radiation exposure concerns. High-resolution cervical auscultation (HRCA) presents a non-invasive alternative with comparable accuracy. Yet, existing studies have only assessed HRCA in tandem with VFSS, without applying it to clinical settings. We propose an AI-enhanced PC software deploying HRCA for real-time bedside s

A bedside swallowing screen for the identification of post-extubation dysphagia on the intensive care unit - validation of the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS)-ICU.

PURPOSE: Screening for dysphagia at the intensive care unit (ICU) soon after extubation can prevent aspiration, pneumonia, lower mortality, and shorten re-feeding interval. This study aimed to modify the Gugging Swallowing Screen (GUSS), which was developed for acute stroke patients, and to validate it for extubated patients in the ICU. METHODS: In this prospective study, forty-five patients who had been intubated for at least 24 h were recruited consecutively at the earliest 24 h after extubation. The modified GUSS-ICU was performed twice by two speech and language therapists independently.

Advancing modified barium swallow pre-sorting with deep learning: a new paradigm for the first step analysis in X-ray swallowing study.

PURPOSE: Modified barium swallow (MBS) exams are pivotal for assessing swallowing function and include diagnostic video segments imaged in various planes, such as anteroposterior (AP or coronal plane) and lateral (or mid-sagittal plane), alongside non-diagnostic 'scout' image segments used for anatomic reference and image set-up that do not include bolus swallows. These variations in imaging files necessitate manual sorting and labeling, complicating the pre-analysis workflow. METHODS: Our study introduces a deep learning approach to automate the categorization of swallow videos in MBS exams,

Differences in cough strength, respiratory function, and physical performance in older adults with and without low swallowing function in the repetitive saliva swallowing test.

[Purpose] In older adults, the risk of aspiration pneumonia increases because of coexisting factors such as age-related decline in swallowing function, inefficient cough, reduced respiratory function, and poor physical performance. This study aimed to investigate the differences in cough strength, respiratory function, and physical performance in community-dwelling ambulatory older adults with and without low swallowing function. [Participants and Methods] In 225 community-dwelling ambulatory older adults, swallowing function (the repetitive saliva swallowing test, RSST), cough strength (peak
