Investigating the Immediate Voice Changes via Perceptual and Acoustic Methods Among Normophonic Swimming Coaches.

OBJECTIVE: This research aimed to investigate perceptual and acoustic changes in voice quality due to occupational voice use among swimming coaches with healthy voices. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: In this study, 52 swimming coaches were evaluated, and 35 were included, all of whom were determined to have healthy voices by videolaryngoscopy (VLS) and auditory-perceptual assessment. Then, eligible participants assessed both perceptually and acoustically before and after the swimming training sessions on their most intensive working days, at the Ministry of Sports' semi-Olympic swimming pools. The v…

Underwater paddling kinematics and hydrodynamics in a surface swimming duck versus a diving duck.

Some duck species mostly swim on the water surface while others frequently dive underwater. We compared the paddling kinematics of mandarin ducks (Axis galericulata) that feed on the surface and diving ferruginous pochards (Aythya nyroca) that feed underwater. Both species were trained to perform the same horizontal, submerged swimming at 1 m depth in a controlled set-up. Mandarins used alternate foot paddling exclusively, while pochards varied their gait between alternate foot paddling and simultaneous paddling with both feet. Unlike mandarins, pochards swam with their body tilted at an angle…

Hypercapnic warm-up and re-warm-up-A novel experimental approach in swimming sprint.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effective warm-up protocol using an added respiratory dead space (ARDS) 1200 ml volume mask to determine hypercapnic conditions, on the swimming velocity of the 50 m time trial front crawl. Eight male members of the university swimming team, aged 19-25, performed three different warm-up protocols: 1) standardized warm-up in water (WUCON); 2) hypercapnic warm-up in water (WUARDS); 3) hypercapnic a 20-minute transition phase on land, between warm-up in water and swimming test (RE-WUARDS). The three warm-up protocols were implemented in random order …

Endurance swimming performance and physiology of juvenile Green Sturgeon (Acipenser medirostris) at different temperatures.

Sturgeon are threatened by anthropogenic changes to river systems, including entrainment or impingement at water diversions (i.e. the unwanted passage of fish through a water intake or physical contact with a barrier screen, likely caused by high intake velocities). Though there are no universally accepted protocols to determine water diversion risk, previous studies on sturgeon suggest that laboratory evaluations of swimming performance are an effective way to describe susceptibility to entrainment or impingement. The swimming performance of juvenile Green Sturgeon (~5 cm fork length), Acipen…

Aquatic Sports Injuries: Biomechanics, Injury Patterns, and Imaging in Swimming, Water Polo, and Diving.

Aquatic sports, such as swimming, water polo, diving, and artistic swimming, combine endurance, strength, and flexibility with unique biomechanical demands, often leading to sport-specific injuries. Although water is a low-impact environment, the repetitive and high-intensity movements required in these disciplines increase the risk of both acute and overuse injuries. Swimmers frequently encounter shoulder overuse syndromes, water polo players face injuries from throwing and physical contact, and divers are at risk for spinal and wrist injuries during entry impacts. Imaging modalities, particu…

Little evidence of cardiac involvement in Mild and Moderate Swimming- Induced Pulmonary Oedema (SIPE).

OBJECTIVES: Swimming-induced pulmonary oedema (SIPE) is a potentially fatal condition associated with open-water swims. We sought to quantify the contribution of cardiac dysfunction to SIPE. DESIGN: We aimed to assess the incidence of SIPE during an endurance cold water swim. We determined associations between SIPE and changes in cardiac function through a SIPE questionnaire, lung ultrasound (LUS), cardiac biomarkers (N-Terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT proBNP) and cardiac troponin I (cTnI)) and transthoracic echocardiograms (TTE). METHODS: Twenty open-water swimmers (10 males) und…

Banter as transformative practice: linguistic play and joking relationships in a UK swimming club.

This article investigates the multiple interpretations and uses of banter as an inclusive and exclusionary practice amongst competitive youth swimmers in the Southeast of England. As a metacommunicative act, banter is a form of linguistic play that focuses on the ways in which the words are delivered, and the social relationships involved between those engaged in banter. Through an immersive "apprenticeship" within a competitive swimming club from 2018 to 2022, I was party to particular forms of English "humorous" communication and invitations to join in banter with coaches and swimmers. As co…

The effects of sodium bicarbonate ingestion on swimming interval performance in trained competitive swimmers.

The use of sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3) supplementation to improve repeated high-intensity performance is recommended; however, most swimming performance studies examine time trial efforts rather than repeated swims with interspersed recovery that are more indicative of training sessions. The aim of this study, therefore, was to investigate the effects of 0.3 g.kg-1 BM NaHCO3 supplementation on sprint interval swimming (8 × 50 m) in regionally trained swimmers. Fourteen regionally competitive male swimmers (body mass (BM): 73 ± 8 kg) volunteered for this double-blind, randomised, crossover desi…

Characterization and chlorine reactivity of particulate matter released by bathers in indoor swimming pools.

Disinfecting swimming pool water is essential for preventing waterborne diseases. An unforeseen consequence of treating water with disinfectants is the formation of disinfection by-products (DPBs) that can cause harmful effects to health through the interactions between the added disinfectant and organic matter in the water. The present work focuses on the chlorine reactivity with particles released by bathers. Such particles are collected in the filter backwash water of swimming pools and this study intends to distinguish DPBs generated from dissolved chemicals from those formed by particulat…

Night eating model shows time-specific depression-like behavior in the forced swimming test.

The circadian clock system is associated with feeding and mood. Patients with night eating syndrome (NES) delay their eating rhythm and their mood declines during the evening and night, manifesting as time-specific depression. Therefore, we hypothesized that the NES feeding pattern might cause time-specific depression. We established new NES model by restricted feeding with high-fat diet during the inactive period under normal-fat diet ad libitum. The FST (forced swimming test) immobility time in the NES model group was prolonged only after lights-on, corresponding to evening and early night f…

Limiting swimming pool outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis - the roles of regulations, staff, patrons and research.

Cryptosporidium is the leading cause of swimming pool outbreaks of gastroenteritis. Transmission occurs through the ingestion of oocysts that are passed in the faeces of an infected person or animal when an accidental faecal release event occurs. Cryptosporidium parasites present specific challenges for infection control as oocysts are highly resistant to chlorine levels used for pool disinfection, infected individuals can shed large numbers of oocysts, there is a long incubation period and shedding of oocysts occurs even after symptom resolution. The purposes of this review are to identify ke…
