The behaviour of Sarcoptes scabiei var. suis has been studied in hyperkeratotic scabies of pigs (fig. 1). The scanning electron microscope enabled us to observe the outer surface of the eggs in the burrow and even within the cut body of the fertilized female mite (fig. 2). Early events during hatching of the eggs and the first steps of the newborn larva (fig. 3) are shown. The presence of crystals containing calcium and phosphate is shown to occur in places where huge amounts of faecal material are collected (fig. 4). Although some of these aspects have not been published previously we observe

BACKGROUND: African swine fever (ASF) is a highly fatal swine disease caused by the ASF virus (ASFV), resulting in substantial socio-economic impacts in affected regions worldwide. The remarkable environmental stability and tenacity of ASFV play a critical role in indirect transmission through contaminated carcasses and fomites. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the survival of ASFV in multiple sample types relevant to potential indirect transmission routes.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The stability and tenacity of ASFV in whole blood, oral and rectal swabs, and tissues, including the spleen, …

African swine fever (ASF), caused by the highly contagious African swine fever virus (ASFV), poses a significant threat to domestic and wild pigs worldwide. Despite its limited host range and lack of zoonotic potential, ASF has severe socio-economic and environmental consequences. Current control strategies primarily rely on early detection and culling of infected animals, but these measures are insufficient given the rapid spread of the disease. Developing effective therapeutics against ASFV is crucial to prevent further spread and mitigate economic losses. Although vaccination remains critic…

African Swine Fever (ASF) is a viral disease affecting both wild and domestic swine, with the potential for major lethality rates. In addition to direct losses for producers, its notification in a free country or zone leads to international trade restrictions. The disease has spread globally at concerning levels, with outbreaks reported in recent years across five continents. Time series analysis of ASF outbreak notifications indicates an increasing trend in Europe and Asia. For Europe, including both domestic pigs and wild boar, seasonality was pronounced in the summer and autumn (July, Augus…
