Syphilis, a sexually transmitted infection caused by Treponema pallidum (T. pallidum), is re-emerging globally. Recent epidemiological data show a rising incidence, particularly among men who have sex with men (MSM). Known as 'the great mimic' for its broad clinical spectrum, secondary syphilis classically presents with a maculopapular rash involving the trunk and extremities. However, it can also present with atypical cutaneous manifestations, especially in immunocompromised patients. This aspect may contribute to delayed diagnosis and treatment. Starting from a clinical case, we will conduct

Syphilis gained notoriety in the 1500s, when it became widespread throughout Europe. While the origins of syphilis are not certain, recent data have shown that it may have originated in the Americas from a close relative that causes Yaws (Treponema pallidum pertenue).(1) For the past 500years, the disease has shown its various faces all over the world. The 19th century saw an entire medical subspecialty-syphilology (sometimes known as syphilography)-devoted to the study of the great disease, then known as "the great imitator." Syphilis has an entire textbook of presentations and can mimic many

Positron emission tomography (PET) has been used to aid in diagnosis of inflammatory and infectious disease. We describe the case of a patient with early latent syphilis with increased metabolic activity along the aorta detected via PET, suggesting probable aortitis. Three months after treatment, the PET showed apparent resolution of the aortitis.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis has seen an increased incidence in recent years and can have serious and irreversible consequences if left un-diagnosed and untreated. This case report describes a presentation of syphilis and acute kidney injury - a scenario sparsely described in existing literature.
CASE PRESENTATION: This 43-year old Man who has Sex with Men (MSM) presented to the emergency department with a 3-week history of vomiting and headaches, progressing to include pyrexia. These symptoms started following his return from a 2-week cruise in Central America throughout which he had been well. He h

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the relationship between syphilis and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection among inner-city, minority group adolescents.
METHODS: From August 1989 through June 1990, serum from all positive serologic tests for syphilis, obtained from patients attending a comprehensive adolescent health center in an acquired immunodeficiency syndrome epicenter and its two school-based clinics, were frozen without patient identifiers and were subsequently screened for HIV by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay with confirmatory Western blot for positives.

BACKGROUND: There is a change in the pattern and prevalence of acquired syphilis due to better awareness, surveillance, laboratory diagnosis, and treatment in India in recent years. However, restrictive measures for COVID-19 may produce different effects on incidence.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: We aimed to study the changing trend of acquired syphilis in relation to COVID-19 outbreak in a tertiary care hospital in North India.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all the cases of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) was done from January 2016 to June 2022. Demographic, clinical, an

Background: The objective of this study is to investigate the prevalence and epidemiological changes of major sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in Korea over the past decade. Methods: From 2010 to 2021, patients diagnosed with STIs based on ICD-10 codes were analyzed using Korean Health insurance data. The analysis included the number of patients, prevalence, and age-specific prevalence (in 5-year intervals) over this period. We examined changes in disease patterns over time by analyzing the annual trends and age-specific prevalence of bacterial STIs such as chlamydia, mycoplasma, gonorrh

BACKGROUND: Targeted partner notification (PN), or limiting PN to groups in which efforts are most successful, has been suggested as a potentially cost-effective alternative to providing PN for all syphilis case-patients. The purpose of this study was to identify index case characteristics associated with highest yield partner elicitation and subsequent case finding to determine whether some groups could be reasonably excluded from PN efforts.
METHODS: We examined index case characteristics and PN metrics from syphilis case management records of 4 sexually transmitted disease control programs

Malignant syphilis (MS) is a rare form of secondary syphilis with grotesque skin lesions, systemic manifestation and life-threatening complications. This article presents a case of MS in an immunocompetent 41-year-old female, who initially manifested with a generalized nonpruritic erythematous rash and systemic symptoms. She was mistreated for generalized impetigo and hepatitis attributed to chronic alcoholism. After partial recovery and a 3-month latent period, she developed infiltrated plaques with crusts on the trunk, head and neck; pharyngitis and laryngeal lesions; generalized lymphadenop

To help determine the role of lumbar puncture in evaluation of patients with asymptomatic late syphilis, we reviewed results of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) testing of 47 asymptomatic patients with syphilis. Syphilis was of unknown duration (n = 27) or known duration of greater than one year (n = 20), and all patients had reactive rapid plasma reagin (RPR) tests and reactive fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption tests. Thirty-two per cent of subjects had abnormal CSF findings; these included elevated protein in nine (19%) of 47 and pleocytosis in six (13%) of 47. In most cases, the etiology

The results of cerebrospinal fluid examination of 451 patients treated for syphilis were analysed. In 34 patients abnormalities were found in the protein level, cell number and serological investigations. Thus, there is an absolute indication to cerebrospinal fluid examination in each case in which serological tests remain positive despite adequate specific therapy.

BackgroundRecent increases in syphilis diagnoses among heterosexual individuals are a growing public health concern. The NEXUS study aimed to qualitatively assess the contexts surrounding syphilis transmission among heterosexually-identifying individuals in England.MethodsWe conducted semi-structured interviews with heterosexually-identifying individuals diagnosed with primary, secondary, or early latent syphilis in the previous year, and with healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in syphilis management. Participants were recruited from sexual health services across three regions in England

BACKGROUND: Standard therapy for early syphilis involves intramuscular injections of penicillin G, which frequently faces shortages in several countries. Fourteen-day amoxicillin therapy has been suggested as an alternative to benzathine penicillin G, but the optimal duration of amoxicillin therapy remains unclear and could theoretically be shortened to less than 14 days. The aim of this study was to explore the effectiveness of short-term amoxicillin therapy for early syphilis.
METHODS: We retrospectively explored the effectiveness of short-term amoxicillin therapy for early syphilis. The tr

The promising diagnostic performance of molecular testing for syphilis using saliva and urine samples has been reported; however, further evaluation of its possible application for diagnosis and molecular surveillance is required. In addition, the development of a rapid and easy-to-perform molecular test for syphilis is important for its use in the clinical setting. We comprehensively evaluated the diagnostic and surveillance performance of two novel loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assays using saliva and urine samples. Saliva, urine, and whole blood were collected from patients

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the case-finding effectiveness of a clinic-based partner notification effort for early syphilis in Madagascar.
METHODS: We asked index cases who had proven early syphilis to identify and provide contact information of recent sex partners (in the past 3, 6, and 12 months for primary, secondary, and early latent syphilis, respectively). Named sex partners were contacted by index cases (patient notification) or, if approved by the index case, clinic staff members (provider notification); notified of their potential exposure to syphilis; and asked to come to the clinic for
