Taenia saginata is a globally distributed tapeworm responsible for human taeniasis due to the ingestion of raw or undercooked beef. T. saginata is present in several Asian countries, including China, Thailand, Lao PDR, Cambodia, and Vietnam, but little is known about its genetic variation. Taeniasis occurs after ingestion of undercooked pork infected with cysticerci. Most Taenia solium infections are mild; proglottids are rarely noticed in the feces. Cysticercosis develops with ingestion of eggs from a tapeworm carrier. In January and February 1974, 32 adults (20 males and 12 females) and a 13-year-old girl with taeniasis saginata were treated with the mixture of boiled areca nuts and pumpkin seeds at Mastoban, Jen-ai District, Nantou County, Taiwan. A total of 48 worms including 42 scolices were recovered from 29 cases. Side-effects were observed in 4 cases including 3 with complaints of dizziness, tinnitus, nausea and vomiting, and one with coma and abdominal pain. Mixtures of 75-150 g areca nuts and 50-100 g pumpkin seeds were judged effective and safe.

Breadfruit tree (Artocarpus tonkinensis) is used in Laotian folk medicine for the treatment of taeniasis. Breadfruit tree preparations impair in vitro the motility of the cestodes Hymenolepis nana causing their motor excitation, contracture and death. The latter is observed when fairly high concentrations of the preparations (10(-2) = 2.10(-3)) are used. In mice experimentally invaded by H. nana it was shown that the water extraction of breadfruit tree substance is rather less effective than its ethanol extraction and has some purgative action, which increases the therapeutic effect.

Cestodes are very frequent intestinal parasites. They induce different troubles, regrouped as "taeniasis". In our study, 30 patients with Taenia saginata and 10 with Hymenolepis nana has been treated by one single dose of praziquantel, a wide-spectrum anti-helminthic drug, at the dosage of 10 mg/kg/day and 20 mg/kg/day respectively. As side-effects, no biological disturbances occurred, but 6 patients complained of abdominal pain and diarrhea. The efficiency has been complete. Praziquantel seems to be the drug of choice as treatment of adult cestodes.
