Compulsivity-related behavioral features of problematic usage of the internet: A scoping review of paradigms, progress, and perspectives.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Compulsivity contributes to the development and maintenance of multiple addictive disorders. However, the relationship between compulsivity-related cognitive features and problematic usage of the internet (PUI), an umbrella term for various internet use disorders/interfering behaviors, remains largely unclear, partly due to the multidimensional nature of compulsivity. This scoping review utilized a four-domain framework of compulsivity to consider this topic and aimed to summarize available evidence on compulsivity-related neuropsychological characteristics in PUI based on

Psilocybin therapy increases cognitive and neural flexibility in patients with major depressive disorder.

Psilocybin has shown promise for the treatment of mood disorders, which are often accompanied by cognitive dysfunction including cognitive rigidity. Recent studies have proposed neuropsychoplastogenic effects as mechanisms underlying the enduring therapeutic effects of psilocybin. In an open-label study of 24 patients with major depressive disorder, we tested the enduring effects of psilocybin therapy on cognitive flexibility (perseverative errors on a set-shifting task), neural flexibility (dynamics of functional connectivity or dFC via functional magnetic resonance imaging), and neurometabol

Motor, emotional and cognitive deficits in adult BACHD mice: a model for Huntington's disease.

RATIONALE: Huntington's disease (HD) is characterized by progressive motor dysfunction, emotional disturbances and cognitive deficits. It is a genetic disease caused by an elongation of the polyglutamine repeats in the huntingtin gene. Whereas HD is a complex disorder, previous studies in mice models have largely been confined to assessing motor deficits. OBJECTIVES: The aim of the present studies is a comprehensive phenotypical assessment of not only motor and gait deficits, but also of emotional and cognitive deficits in adult BACHD mice. MATERIAL AND METHODS: 46 male BACHD mice between 9

The "ABCD" framework for assessment: a task-oriented approach to reconcile multimodal diagnostic discordance.

BACKGROUND: Pre-operative assessment of hiatal hernia (HH) often reveals discordance between endoscopy, barium swallow, and high-resolution manometry (HRM). These discrepancies can lead to diagnostic uncertainty and suboptimal surgical planning. We propose the "ABCD" framework to integrate these multimodal findings into a clinical-task-oriented decision process. METHODS: A comprehensive review of current diagnostic standards (Chicago 4.0, Lyon 2.0, AFS-LDF classification) and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence (AI), was conducted to identify common points of diagnostic d

Phoneme Monitoring in Developmental Dyslexia: Pupillometric Evidence for Cognitive Rather than Acoustic Origins of Phonological Deficits.

Background. Developmental dyslexia (DD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by persistent difficulties acquiring fluent reading. A core feature is impaired phonological processing, though its etiology remains debated. Two competing accounts attribute phonological deficits either to reduced acoustic sensitivity to lexical stress cues or to insufficient cognitive support during phoneme processing. Methods. To test these accounts, 57 Italian children (28 with DD, 29 typically developing) completed a phoneme monitoring task in which targets appeared in strong or weak syllables, varying

Unraveling the contribution of executive functions to language impairment in ALS.

Objectives: This study aims to unravel the association between language deficits and executive functions in non-demented amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) patients by means of 1) assessing the executive determinants of language impairment (LI) and 2) simultaneously testing the effects of both executive and language performances on phonemic verbal fluency (PVF) deficits. Methods: N = 299 non-demented ALS patients underwent the Edinburgh Cognitive and Behavioral ALS Screen (ECAS), being also assessed for behavioral/psychiatric and motor-functional features. Two sets of logistic models were run

How role reversal and interpersonal closeness shape verbal communication cooperation: an fNIRS hyperscanning study.

Role reversal refers to the exchange of original role responsibilities between interaction partners in social interactions, aiming to achieve perspective shifting and task completion. It plays a crucial role in facilitating interpersonal cooperation. However, research on the neural mechanisms underlying the effects of role reversal on cooperation, particularly under varying interpersonal closeness contexts, remains limited. This study employed hyperscanning technique based on Functional Near-infrared Spectroscopy with a cooperative sorting task to investigate the impact of role reversal and in

Dissociable Components of Experience-Driven Attention.

What we pay attention to is influenced by current task goals (goal-directed attention) [1, 2], the physical salience of stimuli (stimulus-driven attention) [3-5], and selection history [6-12]. This third construct, which encompasses reward learning, aversive conditioning, and repetitive orienting behavior [12-18], is often characterized as a unitary mechanism of control that can be contrasted with the other two [12-14]. Here, we present evidence that two different learning processes underlie the influence of selection history on attention, with dissociable consequences for orienting behavior.

Effects of Mild Blast Traumatic Brain Injury on Cognitive- and Addiction-Related Behaviors.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) commonly results in cognitive and psychiatric problems. Cognitive impairments occur in approximately 30% of patients suffering from mild TBI (mTBI), and correlational evidence from clinical studies indicates that substance abuse may be increased following mTBI. However, understanding the lasting cognitive and psychiatric problems stemming from mTBI is difficult in clinical settings where pre-injury assessment may not be possible or accurate. Therefore, we used a previously characterized blast model of mTBI (bTBI) to examine cognitive- and addiction-related outcomes

Differences in neuropsychological performance between subtypes of obsessive-compulsive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological studies have suggested that frontal-striatal dysfunction plays a role in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), although findings have been inconsistent, possibly due to heterogeneity within the disorder and methodological issues. The purpose of the present study was therefore to compare the neuropsychological performance of different subtypes of OCD and matched non-clinical controls (NCs) on the Cambridge Automated Neuropsychological Test Battery (CANTAB). METHODS: Fifty-nine OCD patients and 59 non-clinical controls completed selected tests from CANTAB examining

Rigidity in social and emotional memory in the R6/2 mouse model of Huntington's disease.

Four experiments were conducted to examine social and emotional memory in the R6/2 transgenic mouse model of Huntington's disease. First, R6/2 mice were tested in a social transmission of food preference task where they had to acquire a preference for a flavoured food (acquisition) and subsequently to learn a preference for a different flavour (shifted reinforcement). R6/2 mice performed well in the acquisition trial. However, they were impaired in the shifted reinforcement trial and perseverated on the first preference learned. Second, mice were trained in an inhibitory avoidance paradigm, wi

Evaluation of tomato farmworker upper limb ergonomic risk factors.

Research on musculoskeletal disorders among tomato farmworkers is limited. This pilot study aims to generate insights and preliminary data on tasks performed by tomato farmworkers at a demonstration test plot, evaluating associated ergonomic risk factors. A demonstration test plot was constructed to simulate tasks performed by tomato farmworkers. Muscle activity in the anterior deltoid and upper trapezius was measured using surface electromyography (sEMG) and compared among tasks. The intensity of physical activity during stake pounding, bucket tossing, and tying tasks was monitored using a GT

Homecare workers' experiences of providing transpersonal palliative care: A qualitative, arts‑based explorative study.

The global population is rapidly aging, increasing the demand for palliative home care, which is largely provided by homecare workers, operating with minimal resources and significant personal involvement. Task-oriented caring limit opportunities for ethical, holistic, and sustainable care. We explored how homecare workers experience transpersonal palliative care and how they perceive its depth, intensity, and complexity. Using an arts‑based qualitative design that combined painting and storytelling, we gathered narratives from 14 homecare workers in Sweden during the spring of 2025. We analyz

Teaching focused echocardiography for rheumatic heart disease screening.

Screening for rheumatic heart disease (RHD) requires workers skilled in echocardiography, which typically involves prolonged, specialized training. Task shifting echocardiographic screening to nonexpert health workers may be a solution in settings with limited human resources. An 8-week training program was designed to train health workers without any prior experience in focused echocardiography for RHD screening. Seven health workers participated. At the completion of training, the health workers performed unsupervised echocardiography on 16 volunteer children with known RHD status. A pediatr…

Enhancing aesthetic outcomes of soft-tissue coverage of the hand.

Hand aesthetics in general and aesthetic refinements of soft-tissue coverage of the hand in particular have been increasingly considered over the past few years. Advancements of microsurgery together with the traditional methods of tissue transfer have expanded the number of techniques available to the reconstructive surgeon, thus shifting the reconstructive paradigm from simply "filling the defect" to reconstructive refinement to provide the best functional and aesthetic results. However, drawing the boundary between what does and what does not constitute "aesthetic" reconstruction of the han

Extensive Experience Remodels Neural Task Circuitry to Escape the Frontal Bottleneck and Increase Automaticity of Categorization.

Object category learning is a foundational cognitive process. Most human category learning studies involve brief paradigms lasting a few hours and show increased shape tuning in visual areas and task-dependent responses in PFC. Other studies also identify a "frontal bottleneck" that limits multitasking. However, real-world categorization often involves months or years of practice, potentially producing qualitative shifts toward automaticity. We tested the hypothesis that extensive training causes a spatio-temporal shift in the neural circuitry supporting categorization. Participants were train
