PURPOSE: Alterations in neuromotor function occur following lower-limb injuries and might be a factor in recurrent injury. We evaluated if adults with previous lower-limb muscle or tendon injury demonstrate differences in neuromotor function compared with uninjured or control limbs.
METHODS: A systematic search of health databases MEDLINE, EMBASE, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus was conducted from inception until the end of April 2024. Studies evaluating neuromotor function of adults with a history of lower-limb muscle or tendon injury compared to an uninjured contralateral or control limb were inclu

BACKGROUND: Foot strike patterns during running are classified into two types: rearfoot strike (RFS) and non-rearfoot strike (NRFS). These patterns are considered biomechanical risk factors for running-related injuries (RRIs). However, limited research exists on the prevalence or incidence of RRIs associated with different foot strike patterns, particularly within training or clinical practice contexts. Therefore, this epidemiological study aimed to investigate the prevalence and injury risk ratio (IRR) of RRIs concerning different foot strike patterns.
METHODS: A total of 182 male Japanese a

Bipartite patella is a developmental variant that typically remains unrecognized but may rarely comprise an incidental finding following trauma. Traumatic separation of a bipartite patella is a rare clinical entity that can mimic a patellar fracture. The concurrent presence of complete quadriceps tendon rupture and retinacular injury is extremely uncommon. We describe the case of a 61-year-old male who presented after a ground-level fall with anterior knee pain, palpable suprapatellar gap, joint effusion, and inability to actively extend the knee. Radiographs revealed separation of the patella

BACKGROUND Extensor pollicis longus (EPL) tendon rupture is a potential complication following distal radius fracture, typically occurring several weeks after injury. Herein, we present a rare case of acute extensor pollicis longus tendon rupture associated with a distal radius fracture. CASE REPORT A 35-year-old woman visited our hospital with a distal radius fracture. At the time of examination, the thumb could be moved, although there was pain in the wrist. Computed tomography (CT) revealed a fracture line extending to the ulnar side of Lister's tubercle. During volar locking plate fixation

A thorough exploration of traumatic wound is critical to accurately assess the severity of the injury. When it comes to glass-related injuries, the diagnosis of a glass foreign body is often prioritized over identifying any underlying damage. The authors report a case of peroneus longus tendon rupture caused by plate-glass accident that was misdiagnosed in the emergency department (ED) as a superficial laceration.

Pilon fractures occur over a broad spectrum of injury severity and soft-tissue compromise. This article will review a distinct pilon injury variant characterized by posterior tibial tendon incarceration in posteromedial pilon fracture propagation. This injury pattern is vital to recognize preoperatively because failure to mobilize the entrapped posterior tibial tendon (PTT) will result in fracture malreduction and postoperative loss of PTT excursion. In addition, the authors' preferred surgical technique for PTT mobilization and anatomic fracture reduction is described.

CASE: Reconstruction of function in C7-T1 lower brachial plexus injury requires restoration of finger flexion and extension with nerve or tendon transfers. A 22-year-old man was involved in an all-terrain vehicle rollover accident. First-stage nerve transfers included extensor carpi radialis brevis to the anterior interosseous nerve and supinator to the posterior interosseous nerve. After second-stage (15 months later) side-to-side flexor digitorum profundus and Camitz abductorplasty, he was able to achieve tripod pinch and power grip.
CONCLUSION: A combined approach with nerve transfers foll

Quality of life is enhanced by engagement in meaningful activities and participation using our hands. In African countries, people rely predominantly on the use of their hands to engage in economic productive activities, including agricultural, fishing, mining and construction, that are largely performed by machines in high-income contexts. Anecdotal evidence suggests a high incidence of flexor tendon injuries that are managed using protocols that were adopted from high-income countries and implemented without considering contextual differences. African therapists use discretion in selecting p

Background: Recent adaption of nerve transfer surgery to improve upper extremity function in cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) is an exciting development. Tendon transfer procedures are well established, reliable, and can significantly improve function. Despite this, few eligible surgical candidates in the United States undergo these restorative surgeries. Evidence Acquisition: The literature on these procedures was reviewed. Results: Options to improve function include surgery to restore elbow extension, wrist extension, and hand opening and closing function. Tendon transfers are reliable and

Nicotine is harmful to many bodily systems; however, the effects of nicotine on intra-substance tendon healing remain largely unexplored. The purpose of this study was to examine the functional, structural, and biomechanical effects of nicotine on the healing of Achilles tendons in rats after an acute full-thickness injury. Sixty Sprague-Dawley rats were enrolled in this study. Half were exposed to 0.9% saline and half to 61 ng/mL of nicotine for 3 months via subcutaneous osmotic pumps. At 3 months, all rats underwent blunt full thickness transection of the left Achilles tendon and were immobi

In response to injury, tendon fibroblasts are activated, migrate to the wound, and contribute to tissue repair by producing and organizing the extracellular matrix. Collagen VI is a microfibrillar collagen enriched in the pericellular matrix of tendon fibroblasts with a potential regulatory role in tendon repair mechanism. We investigated the molecular basis of the interaction between collagen VI and the cell membrane both in tissue sections and fibroblast cultures of human tendon, and analyzed the deposition of collagen VI during migration and myofibroblast trans-differentiation, two crucial

PURPOSE: Infrapatellar branch of saphenous nerve injury is a common complication following hamstring graft harvest during anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction. The direction of skin incision performed at proximal tibial metaphysis may affect the rate of iatrogenic nerve damage. Aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate evidence that would substantiate the adoption of one incision over another for hamstring graft harvesting.
METHODS: The available literature was systematically screened searching studies dealing with iatrogenic injury to the saphenous nerve after anterior crucia

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between the upper limb anthropometric dimensions and a history of dominant upper limb injury in tennis players. Dominant and non-dominant wrist, forearm, elbow and arm circumferences, along with a history of dominant upper limb injuries, were assessed in 147 male and female players, assigned to four groups based on location of injury: wrist (n = 9), elbow (n = 25), shoulder (n = 14) and healthy players (n = 99). From anthropometric dimensions, bilateral differences in circumferences and in proportions were calculated. The wrist group pr

A number of tendon transfers have been described for opponensplasty. Transfer of the palmaris longus (PL) tendon with a palmar fascial extension was initially described by Camitz. This technique has mostly been combined with carpal tunnel release in patients with long standing median neuropathy with atrophy of the thenar muscles. However, the Camitz transfer has not been previously described in the setting of pediatric median nerve injury. We report 4 cases of Camitz transfer in pediatric patients with median nerve injuries. Four children (all female; age range 3-15 yrs) underwent PL tendon tr

Zone II extensor tendon injuries are often associated with sharp laceration and saw injuries. These injuries are usually been immobilized for 4 to 6 weeks with static splint followed with gradual increment in ROM at distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. Zone II injuries are usually associated with stiff DIP joint. Any effects taken to improve the DIP joint flexion aggravates the extensor lag at DIP joint. We report a dynamic passive mobilization regime for treating zone II extensor tendon injuries. We found dynamic passive mobilization program was effective in managing these injuries in preventi

INTRODUCTION: The outcome of primary extensor repair in hand surgery has been widely explored, but little systematic effort has been made to investigate the influence of the anatomical zone of tendon injury. Therefore, the aim of our study was to assess the outcome of primary extensor tendon repair with a special focus on the pre-operative state and Verdan's anatomical zones. Our hypothesis being tested was that the outcome after primary extensor repair depends on the complexity of trauma and the site of lesion.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and seventy seven patients with 203 extensor t

The ankle is the site of many sports-related injuries. There is, however, continued debate over which treatment strategies are most effective for various conditions. This article reviews the relevant literature from the past year to shed some light on the ongoing controversy regarding the best treatment options along the treatment continuum, from conservative to operative management, for three common ankle conditions: lateral ankle sprains, Achilles tendonitis, and Achilles tendon rupture.

The "Extensor habitus" phenomenon occurs in finger flexor tendon injuries and consists of a paradoxical extension of the interphalangeal joints after an attempt to flex the finger. The mechanism of extension is considered to be a contraction of the flexor digitorum profundus that is then transmitted via the lumbrical muscle structure to the extensor expansion. Using electromyography, we recorded the lumbrical muscle activity during the paradoxical extension phenomenon to determine whether the lumbrical muscle contributed to this event. Two patterns of electromyographical activity of the lumbri
