A contribution to the French validation of the clinical anxiety scale amongst health care workers in Switzerland.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety disorders are frequent but remain often underdiagnosed and undertreated. Hence, valid screening instruments are needed to enhance the diagnostic process. The Clinical Anxiety Scale (CAS) is a 25-item anxiety screening tool derived from the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A). However, this scale is not available in French. The General anxiety disorder - 7 (GAD-7) scale, which has been validated in French, is a 7-item instrument with good psychometric properties. This study contributes to the validation of an adapted French version of the CAS, using the GAD-7 as the reference. M

Norharmane potentiated anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like responses induced by imipramine and citalopram: an isobologram analysis.

β-carboline compounds display a therapeutic property for treating depression and anxiety behaviors. Imipramine and citalopram play an important role in the modulation of anxiety and depression behaviors. We investigated the effects of norharmane, imipramine, and citalopram on anxiety- and depression-like effects and their interactions. Elevated plus maze and forced swimming test were used for the assessment of anxiety- and depression-like behaviors in male mice. The results revealed that intraperitoneal (i.p.) administration of norharmane (10 mg/kg) increased percentage of open arm time (%OAT)

Comparative efficacy of different anesthetic techniques on pain perception during nonsurgical periodontal treatment: A parallel, blinded, randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Nonsurgical periodontal treatment improves clinical parameters; however, the procedure is often associated with patient discomfort. Pain control should be considered during periodontal instrumentation. This study evaluated pain perception during periodontal instrumentation using computerized anesthesia versus a noninvasive lidocaine/prilocaine gel. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A parallel, blinded, randomized, clinical trial included 76 volunteers receiving either invasive anesthesia with a computerized device, or noninvasive anesthesia with lidocaine/prilocaine gel during nonsurgical pe

Characterization of Depression- and Anxiety-Like Behaviours in a Mouse Model of Relapsing-Remitting Multiple Sclerosis.

Relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS) is an autoimmune neurological disease and is the most common subtype of MS. In addition, it is associated with the development of depression and anxiety. To date, depressive- and anxiety-like behaviours were only studied using models of progressive MS, which causes severe motor alterations. Thus, we sought to standardise the depressive and anxiety-like behaviours in an RRMS model induced by experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (RR-EAE) in mice. The RR-EAE model was induced in C57BL/6 female mice using myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein (MOG35

The four-plates test-retest paradigm to discriminate anxiolytic effects.

RATIONALE: Animal models of anxiety such as the four-plates test (FPT) enable the detection of an anxiolytic effect not only of benzodiazepines (BZDs) but also of other non-BZD anxiolytic compounds such as the antidepressants paroxetine and venlafaxine. Retesting mice in animal models of anxiety markedly alters the behavioural profile of various drugs. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was first to investigate the function of GABA(A)/BZD receptor and passive avoidance acquisition in the FPT "test-retest". The second aim of this study was to evaluate the capacity of the FPT to discriminate BZD

The alpha-2A adrenoceptor agonist guanfacine regulates traumatic stress processing in juvenile zebrafish.

Early-life stress (ELS), i.e., traumatic events during vulnerable developmental periods, adversely affects adult psychobiological outcomes, with dysregulated noradrenergic processing of trauma proposed to play a role. Guanfacine, a selective alpha-2A adrenergic receptor agonist that blunts noradrenergic signalling in mammals by activating the alpha-2A inhibitory autoreceptor, may be useful to attenuate the long-term consequences of ELS. The zebrafish (Danio rerio) is extensively used in stress research. Here, we investigated the immediate and long-term effects of a traumatic ELS procedure comb

Iron-induced Oxidative Stress and Anxiety-like Behavior in Wistar Rats Following Systemic Iron Administration.

Iron is a trace element essential to many physiological functions in the human body and notably in the brain, where it participates in important metabolic processes. Iron content in the brain is strictly regulated and disruption of these mechanisms can result in iron deficiency or iron excess. Iron accumulation has been hypothesized to be involved in the pathogenesis of various neurodegenerative diseases. In the rat model, repeated systemic iron administration produces iron excess in brain regions involved in spatial cognitive/memory functions. Cognitive deficits are thought to result from iro

The activation of hippocampus microglia in the occurrence of airway hyperresponsiveness comorbidity anxiety.

Airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) is often associated with mood disorders such as anxiety and depression which makes the airway symptoms more complicated and refractory. However, the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. This study investigated whether this was related to the activation of microglia in the hippocampus. Female Balb/c mice were randomly assigned into an AHR model induced by ovalbumin (OVA) and an anxiety model induced by chronic restraint stress (CRS). Anxiety-like behavior was assessed by open field test, elevated plus maze and tail suspension test. Airway resistance following m

Elevated tph2 mRNA expression in a rat model of chronic anxiety.

BACKGROUND: Allelic variations in TPH2, the gene encoding tryptophan hydroxylase 2, the rate-limiting enzyme for brain serotonin (5-HT) biosynthesis, may be genetic predictors of panic disorder and panic responses to panicogenic challenges in healthy volunteers. To test the hypothesis that tph2 mRNA is altered in chronic anxiety states, we measured tph2 expression in an established rat model of panic disorder. METHODS: We implanted 16 adult, male rats with bilateral guide cannulae and then primed them with daily injections of the corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) receptor agonist, urocorti

Influence of sex and genetic background on anxiety-related and stress-induced behaviour of prodynorphin-deficient mice.

The role of dynorphin/kappa opioid receptors in epilepsy and addiction are well accepted, but their function in emotional control is not yet fully understood. Data obtained from different strains of prodynorphin (Pdyn)- and kappa opioid receptor (KOP)-deficient mice do not provide a consistent picture of the functions of Dyn/KOP in anxiety, suggesting the influence of testing conditions and/or genetic background. Therefore, we investigated the behaviour and neurochemistry of male and female Pdyn KO mice on the balb/c and C57Bl/6N background. Consistent with our results obtained from male mice

Prior test experience compromises the anxiolytic efficacy of chlordiazepoxide in the mouse light/dark exploration test.

It is now well established that prior test experience can alter behavioural baselines and attenuate/abolish the anxiolytic efficacy of benzodiazepines in the elevated plus-maze paradigm. In view of evidence that different models of anxiety measure qualitatively distinct forms of anxiety-like behaviour, it is important to establish whether the effects of prior experience extend to other widely-used tests. The present study assessed the behavioural and pharmacological sequelae of a single undrugged prior exposure to the light/dark exploration (L/D) test in mice, using ethological scoring methods

[Animal models of 'anxiety'].

Many animal models of anxiety have been reported; for example, Geller-type or Vogel-type anticonflict tests and ethologically based tests without punishment such as a light/dark test, a hole-board test, a social interaction test, an elevated plus-maze test and so on. These models were pharmacologically validated by the evidence that clinically useful anxiolytic benzodiazepines were active, but activities of serotonergic anxiolytics in these models were inconsistent. These models might measure a mixture of several types of anxiety. Many disorders of anxiety are classified in the Diagnostic and
