This article describes four areas of pediatric orthopaedic education, research, and clinical care undertaken at Texas Scottish Rite Hospital (TSRH) over the past 25 years. These areas include the weekly preoperative conferences, the evolution of the limb lengthening and deformity correction program, the development of the TSRH instrumentation system, and the evolution of the clubfoot treatment program.

Autochthonous human cases of leishmaniasis in the United States are uncommon. We report three new cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis and details of a previously reported case, all outside the known endemic range in Texas. OBJECTIVES: Previous studies have suggested a relationship between low serum levels of vitamin D and lupus. Vitamin D receptor ligands can mediate immunosuppressive effects and low levels of this hormone have been proposed as contributing to the immune activation in lupus and other autoimmune diseases. We sought to investigate the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in our patients with lupus.
METHODS: Serum levels of 25-OH vitamin D were measured in 37 female patients with lupus using an enzyme-linked immunoassay. Correlations with clinical and immunologic measures were determined.

The proportion of foreign-born tuberculosis patients in the United States is increasing. To analyze the epidemiology of tuberculosis in foreign-born people, culture-positive patients with tuberculosis in Houston, Texas, were interviewed from October 1995 through September 1998, and their isolates were molecularly characterized. Of the 1131 patients included in the study, 795 (70.3%) were US born and 336 (29.7%) were foreign born. In the United States, approximately 4000 pregnancies each year are affected by the two most common NTDs (spina bifida and anencephaly). An outbreak of St. Louis encephalitis (SLE) resulted in 28 cases of the disease in Harris County, Texas, in 1986. The cases occurred principally in Baytown, in eastern Harris County, but five cases were also recognized in Houston. The risk of illness increased sharply with age, and all five fatal cases were in persons greater than 55 y. The severity of dental mottling in 2,592 school-aged, lifetime residents of 16 Texas communities was investigated in 1980-81 to identify factors associated with mottling and to construct a prediction model for the prevalence of mottling.
