Previous studies have shown that local angiogenic gene therapy acts, in part, by recruiting endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) to ischemic tissue. Recent data indicate that patients with the most severe vascular disease may have insufficient or deficient EPCs and the poorest response to angiogenic therapy. Accordingly, we hypothesized that combining human CD34(+) cell implantation with local vascular endothelial growth factor 2 (phVEGF2) gene therapy might overcome these deficiencies. The addition of VEGF2 to EPC cultures resulted in significant and dose-dependent decreases in EPC apoptosis.

AIM: The cardiopulmonary effects of early caffeine therapy in surfactant-treated immature baboons were measured.
METHODS: Nine 125-d (term = 185 d) baboons receiving caffeine citrate at 1 and 12 h age as part of a pilot study on the use of nasal CPAP at 24 h were compared to six untreated animals destined for prolonged ventilator support. Transgenic animal model provide a good platform to research the pathogenesis and therapy of chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML). To date, a number of BCR/ABL transgenic animal models have been established using different promoter or tetracycline-controlling system. An inexpensive therapeutic concept compared to the dantrolene-therapy to counter the malignant hyperthermia (MH) is to be discussed, using a case-study from swine-anaesthesia. Hyperventilating the animals (with O2), administering metamizol, beta-blocker, bicarbonate and sufficiently cooling the patient can, if the symptoms are recognized early enough, arrest the hypermetabolic cascade in its track. All the animals that were treated according to this scheme survived the (MH) crisis without any lasting post operative damage.

During a 6-week period, 22 Dairy Shorthorn cows and heifers died with granulocytopaenia and thrombocytopaenia. Clinical signs observed in the affected animals included increased salivation, pyrexia, depression, rumenal stasis, bilateral epistaxis, melaena, increased bleeding after removal of retained foetal membranes and rapid weight loss. Despite intensive antibiotic and vitamin K therapy and blood transfusions, all affected animals died. The aetiological agent, thought to be a fungal toxin, could not be isolated from post mortem specimens or pasture samples.

Severe electrolyte disturbances developed after the administration of hypertonic phosphate enemas in 2 chronically obstipated cats. Anesthetized cats were subjected to standardized cervical spinal trauma produced by a modification of the Allen weight-dropping method.
