The risk of cardiovascular mortality among patients with end-stage renal disease is several times higher than general population. Arterial calcification, a marker of atherosclerosis and a predictor of cardiovascular mortality, is common in chronic kidney disease (CKD). PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Hypertension is an important determinant of cardiovascular disease, and strict blood pressure regulation is beneficially associated with the risk for cardiovascular events or all-cause mortality. However, intensive antihypertensive treatment is not always sufficient to reach normotension. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a gaseous signalling molecule with antihypertensive properties. It is endogenously produced, but can also be exogenously administrated. The current review provides an overview on H2S research performed in the context of hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

Hyperphosphatemic familial tumoral calcinosis (HFTC) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder. Topical sodium thiosulfate (STS) and acetazolamide can be a safe and effective treatment for patients who do not respond to conventional therapy for ectopic calcifications. We report the successful treatment of deep soft-tissue calcifications with topical STS and acetazolamide in a boy diagnosed with HFTC due to a novel homozygous mutation of FGF23.

Allergic contact dermatitis to gold is very rarely reported. The occurrence of 2 recent cases in our department prompted a review of the literature, especially regarding the optimal reagents for patch testing. Gold chloride is most commonly used but may cause persistent dermatitis at the test site. Gold sodium thiosulfate is commercially available in petrolatum and is a reliable, non-irritant preparation for patch testing.

The metagenome of foulings from sulfidic spring "Serovodorodny" (Tatarstan, Russia), where members of the genus Thiothrix was observed, was sequenced. Sulfide biooxidation by the novel sulfide-oxidizing bacteria Pseudomonas sp. C27, which could perform autotrophic and heterotrophic denitrification in mixotrophic medium, was studied in batch and continuous systems. Pseudomonas sp.
