The etiology of subacute granulomatous thyroiditis (SAT) is obscure, although it is postulated to be associated with viral infections and genetic factors. In the present study, the possibility of an infectious etiology was prospectively studied in 27 consecutive patients with SAT. Special emphasis was put on the role of enteroviruses. Coupled sera (interval one month) were taken from all patients and single sera from 29 control subjects for virus antibody determinations. Stool samples were collected for virus isolation and fine-needle aspiration samples from thyroid gland for the detection of

Twenty-three consecutive patients with clinical and biochemical suspicion of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) were evaluated by ultrasonic scanning of the thyroid. Ultrasonic findings supported the diagnosis in all cases. In the 16 patients in whom thyroid scintigraphy was performed this was compatible with SAT. Initially, median thyroid volume was 40 mL (range 20-289) and a very low echogenicity was demonstrated in all patients. The extension of hypoechogenicity exceeded 75% in the majority of patients. Thyroid volume was significantly reduced to a median of 13 mL (range 9-40) (68% reduction, p < 0

The development of Graves' disease as evidenced by diagnostic imaging and appearance of TSH receptor antibodies is described in a 49-year-old woman 6 months after onset of subacute thyroiditis. The HLA typing indicated that the patient had a genetic predisposition to hyperthyroid Graves' disease as well as subacute thyroiditis. A possible causal relationship is discussed.

The effects of the administration of pharmacological quantities of iodide on thyroid function in 18 euthyroid patients with a previous history of painful subacute thyroiditis (SAT) were evaluated, and the results compared to those of iodide administration to 12 euthyroid patients with a previous history of thyroid surgery (TX) for benign nodular thyroid disease. After baseline thyroid function tests, saturated solution of potassium iodide (SSKI; 10 drops; 300 mg iodide) was administered daily for 120 days, and serum T4, T3, and TSH concentrations were assessed 15, 30, 60, 90, 120 days and 2-4

The authors suggest that the prognosis of subacute thyroiditis may be based after treatment on the immunity state. It was revealed that T- and B-lymphocyte as well as nonspecific defence disorders in treated patients with subacute thyroiditis promote more frequent recurrences or hypothyrosis and autoimmune thyroiditis in comparison with patients whose immunity was slightly involved or not involved at all.

Evaluation of the thyroid iodine content by x-ray fluorescence was performed in 13 patients throughout the course of subacute thyroiditis. In the initial hyperthyroid phase of the disease, the iodine stores of the thyroid were not completely depleted. The iodine content (6.5 +/- 3 mg) was about 2.5 times lower than normal values when thyroiditis had developed in a normal thyroid (10 patients); in 3 patients with goiter, it was elevated (29.6 +/- 6.7 mg) but was still within the normal range of euthyroid goitrous patients. After clinical remission, the iodine content of the gland increased only

The rare presentation of a follicular thyroid carcinoma mimicking the clinical and radionuclide features of subacute thyroiditis is described. Granulomatous thyroiditis was initially suspected on the clinical basis of acute onset of a hard, tender right lobe thyroid enlargement with associated systemic symptoms, modest elevation of thyroid hormone levels and suppressed thyroid RAIU. Fine needle aspiration cytology specimens were unsatisfactory for characterization. Three weeks later the thyroid RAIU was normal. The thyroid enlargement persisted, now being clearly visualized as a hypofunctional

Urinary N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminidase (NAG) activity was measured longitudinally in 12 patients with Graves' disease, 5 patients with subacute thyroiditis, and 1 patient with silent thyroiditis, and compared with that of 36 normal controls. The patients with Graves' disease and subacute thyroiditis were treated with anti-thyroid drug (methimazole or propylthiouracil) and prednisolone, respectively. On the other hand, no treatment was given to the patient with silent thyroiditis. Since two patients with Graves' disease clearly showed transient deterioration of the thyroid function during the

This case report details the evaluation and management of a 55-year-old woman who presented to our endocrinology clinic due to low TSH and thyroid nodules previously evaluated by her ENT. The patient originally presented with anterior neck pain and dysphagia. Ultrasonography demonstrated thyroid nodules with suspicious features, prompting a fine needle aspiration (FNA). A biopsy showed a follicular lesion/atypia of undetermined significance (Bethesda III). Due to concerns for malignancy, a right lobectomy was recommended. Thyroid function tests showed subclinical hyperthyroidism. She presented

Blood and thyroid-infiltrating lymphocytes from patients with de Quervain's subacute thyroiditis were tested in the leucocyte migration inhibition test for cell-mediated immunity (CMI) to thyroid antigen. Blood leucocytes were positive for CMI in eleven out of thirteen (85%) patients in the acute phase of the disease. In five cases tested repeatedly this reactivity disappeared after 7-11 months. Thyroid-infiltrating lymphocytes were obtained from eight patients by fine-needle aspiration biopsy. There was a relative accumulation of T lymphocytes (90 +/- 5%) in the thyroid gland as compared to l

BACKGROUND: Thyroid volume has been reported to decrease significantly after episodes of subacute thyroiditis (SAT); however, the relationship between thyroid volume and hypothyroidism remains unclear. This study assessed the association between thyroid volume changes and the hypothyroid phase in patients with SAT, a condition that can progress to persistent hypothyroidism.
METHODS: This retrospective study evaluated 37 patients diagnosed with SAT at the Department of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital (CNUHH) between 2016 and 2021. Since we could not

Subacute thyroiditis is a rare condition believed as immune-mediated inflammation of the thyroid gland that frequently manifests after a viral upper respiratory tract infection. A 52-year-old South-Asian female patient presented to Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) with feeling unwell and sore throat. Moreover, she reported low-grade fever, fatigue, headache, and breathlessness on exertion for the past five weeks. She had a past medical history of gastroesophageal reflux disease. She had no associated cough, rigors, chills, urinary symptoms, night sweats, or weight loss. There was no history of r

Thyroidal 99mTc uptake in the acute thyrotoxic phase of subacute thyroiditis (SAT) is always inhibited. However, a patient with SAT had signs in the right-side thyroid gland with transient thyrotoxicosis and slightly high 99mTc uptake levels in the right lobe, low 99mTc uptake in the left lobe, and normal overall uptake. Histological examination showed cellular destruction and granulomatous inflammatory changes in the right lobe, with marked interstitial fibrosis in the left lobe. The patient was thyrotrophin-receptor antibody (TRAb) positive. After a short course of prednisolone, SAT-like sym
