Trends in ixodid tick abundance and distribution in Great Britain.

The popular, but rarely documented, view in Britain is that ticks have increased in distribution and abundance over recent years. To assess this, we gathered evidence for changes in tick distribution and abundance by distributing a survey questionnaire throughout Britain and by analysing trends in the prevalence of tick infestation on red grouse chicks Lagopus lagopus scoticus Latham (Galliformes: Tetranoidae), gathered over 19 years at three Scottish sites, and on deer (Cetartiodactyla: Cervidae) culled over 11 years on 26 Ministry of Defence (MoD) estates. Based on the survey, the current kn

Adult ixodid ticks on two cattle breeds in the south-western Free State, and their seasonal dynamics.

A study was conducted to compare the species of adult ixodid ticks on Friesian and Bonsmara cattle and their seasonal dynamics. Between five and ten animals of each breed were kept on natural False Upper Karoo vegetation, typical of the south-western Free State. Between May 1990 and October 1991, the animals were examined once or twice a month for the presence of adult ticks which were removed, counted and identified. Six species of ixodid ticks were recorded. The species composition on the two cattle breeds was remarkably similar. Ixodes rubicundus was dominant (55-57.7% of all ticks collecte

Flea and tick control in the 21st century: challenges and opportunities.

Historically, veterinarians have told their clients that one flea is all that is necessary to produce and maintain the clinical signs of fle … idly reducing flea numbers and reducing flea feeding rather than preventing flea bites. Controlling tick infestations is important not only because ticks are nuisance parasites of dogs and cats, but also because they are vectors of a variety of bacterial and protozoal diseases. Achieving satisfactory tick control is often difficult due to unrealistic expectations o …

Molecular epidemiology and risk factors associated with Babesia bigemina infection in cattle.

Bovine babesiosis caused by Babesia bigemina is an important tick-borne disease that affects cattle health and productivity in tropical and subtropical regions. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of B. bigemina in cattle and to identify associated risk factors in three governorates of the Nile Delta region, Egypt. A total of 400 blood samples were collected randomly from cattle and examined using nested PCR assay. The overall prevalence of B. bigemina prevalence was 8% (32/400). The prevalence did not differ significantly according to locality or sex (P > 0.05). However, signi

Avian migrants facilitate invasions of neotropical ticks and tick-borne pathogens into the United States.

Migratory birds have the potential to transport exotic vectors and pathogens of human and animal health importance across vast distances. We systematically examined birds that recently migrated to the United States from the Neotropics for ticks. We screened both ticks and birds for tick-borne pathogens, including Rickettsia species and Borrelia burgdorferi. Over two spring seasons (2013 and 2014), 3.56% of birds (n = 3,844) representing 42.35% of the species examined (n = 85) were infested by ticks. Ground-foraging birds with reduced fuel stores were most commonly infested. Eight tick species

Cutaneous hypersensitivity responses to Rhipicephalus tick larval antigens in pre-sensitized cattle.

Nguni cattle are known to be more resistant to ticks than Bonsmara cattle, even if the immunological mechanisms responsible for this phenomenon are not fully understood. Cutaneous hypersensitivity responses to unfed larval extracts (ULE) of the ticks Rhipicephalus decoloratus and Rhipicephalus microplus were investigated in Nguni and Bonsmara cattle to improve knowledge on the immunity to ticks. Hypersensitivity reactions were induced by intradermal inoculation of 0.1ml of ULE of R. decoloratus and R. microplus ticks (50μg protein) in the right and left ear, respectively, of 8-9-month-old Ngun

Tick survey and detection of Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus in tick species from a non-endemic area, South Marmara region, Turkey.

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is an increasing health concern in Turkey since 2002. There were also some recent human cases from the South Marmara region of Turkey; thus, a tick survey was performed, and possible vector tick species for the CCHF virus were determined in the region. A total of 740 adult ticks were collected from infested livestock from five locations: Çanakkale-Biga, Bursa-Orhaneli, Bursa-Keles, Balıkesir and Bilecik. Total of 11 tick species from the genera Hyalomma, Rhipicephalus, Dermacentor, Ixodes and Haemaphysalis were identified. Rhipicephalus ticks were dominan

Some epizootiological and clinical aspects of ovine babesiosis caused by Babesia ovis--a review.

The study shows a close relationship between incidence of ovine babesiosis caused by Babesia ovis and the activity period and distribution area of the vector tick Rhipicephalus bursa. The most important factor limiting the distribution of this tick is a decrease in humidity. In general, it is absent from areas with an average annual rainfall of less than about 300 mm. The rate of parasitaemia and the degree of anaemia were not correlated. Decrease of the packed-cell volume ranged from 30 to 40%. Parasitized erythrocytes were not observed to block capillaries in the brain, which explained the a

Metarhizium anisopliae: current status and future in hard ticks control in Asia.

Ticks exert a significant economic impact on the livestock industry, particularly in Asian regions. Presently, chemical acaricides constitute the primary method employed to combat tick infestations in livestock, but their use carries adverse environmental consequences. Overreliance on acaricides has contaminated milk and meat products with chemical residues while fostering tick resistance to these agents due to improper and intensive application. Various alternative methods have been explored, including using vaccines to manage tick populations. However, the efficacy of these treatments varies…

[Ectoparasites and phoresants of the root vole (Microtus oeconomus Pall.) in the Polesye].

Drainage melioration in the Polesye resulted in a sharp increase in the number of tundra vole (Microtus oeconomus Pall.) which quickly included into the parasitocenosis of the drained land. There were found 26 parasitic and nonparasitic species of Gamasoidea, 3 species of Ixodidae and 2 species of Trombiculidae, 10 species of Aphaniptera, 3 species of Anoplura but there was found no species specific only for the tundra vole. All found parasites occur on many hosts. This explains wide parasitic links of the tundra vole with other homothermic animals which especially extensive with the bank vole

Tick immunity using mRNA, DNA and protein-based Salp14 delivery strategies.

Guinea pigs exposed to multiple infestations with Ixodes scapularis ticks develop acquired resistance to ticks, which is also known as tick immunity. The I. scapularis salivary components that contribute to tick immunity are likely multifactorial. An anticoagulant that inhibits factor Xa, named Salp14, is present in tick saliva and is associated with partial tick immunity. A tick bite naturally releases tick saliva proteins into the vertebrate host for several days, which suggests that the mode of antigen delivery may influence the genesis of tick immunity. We therefore utilized Salp14 as a mo

Blood plasma proteomics for detecting potential biomarkers for tick resistance in a tropically adapted beef cattle breed.

BACKGROUND: Tick infestation is one of the main challenges in tropical beef cattle production, leading to significant economic losses. Knowledge of the molecular factors underlying natural tick resistance in cattle contributes to genetic selection through the identification of biomarkers that can be used to accurately identify animals resistant to ticks. Although several genes associated with resistance to ticks have been identified, the molecular mechanisms underlying tick resistance are yet to be elucidated. This study investigated the biological processes, pathways, and key proteins involve

Ectoparasitic species from Canis familiaris (Linné) in Buenos Aires province, Argentina.

Several arthropods that live as ectoparasites on domestic dogs can cause severe dermatitis or act as vectors of pathogenic agents, resulting in serious diseases not only in dogs, but also in humans. We studied ectoparasites found on Canis familiaris sampled in five areas in Buenos Aires province, Argentina. The prevalence of fleas, ticks and lice was analyzed, as well as their seasonal variations through the different sites studied. The kind of infestation found in each host was determined and the intensity of natural infestation was estimated. The study was carried out from October 2001 to Ju

Species Diversity and Molecular Screening of Pyrethroid Resistance Mediated by the Voltage-Gated Sodium Channel in Ixodid Ticks from Puducherry, India.

Ticks are major ectoparasites of livestock in India, causing substantial economic losses and transmitting a wide range of pathogens. Control strategies rely heavily on synthetic pyrethroid acaricides; however, resistance associated with mutations in the voltage-gated sodium channel (VGSC) gene has been widely reported. Information on tick species diversity and molecular resistance status in Puducherry remains limited. This study investigated tick diversity, host-associated infestation patterns, and the presence of key VGSC knockdown resistance (kdr) mutations (C190A and G215T). A cross-section
