How Does Visual Temporal Processing Affect Chinese Character Reading in Children With Dyslexia? From the Perspective of Inhibition.

Given that inhibition interacts with visual temporal processing (VTP), the past evidence regarding the influence of VTP on the Chinese character reading of children with dyslexia may not disclose the whole picture without considering inhibition. Thus, the present study is among the first to investigate VTP and cognitive inhibition as well as their relationships to Chinese character reading. We compared the performances of 62 Chinese-speaking children with dyslexia in primary school (n = 62, Mage = 11.36 years) on VTP and inhibition tasks to those in a chronological-age-matched group (CA; n = 6

Relations between speech-reception, psychophysical temporal processing, and subcortical electrophysiological measures of auditory function in humans.

There is a large amount of variability in performance in masked-speech reception tasks, as well as in psychophysical auditory temporal processing tasks, between listeners with normal or relatively normal low-frequency hearing. In this study we used a cross-sectional dataset collected on 102 listeners (34 young, 34 middle-aged, 34 older) to assess whether variance in these tasks could be explained by variance in subcortical electrophysiological measures of auditory function (auditory brainstem responses and frequency following responses), and whether variance in speech-reception performance cou

Reduced multisensory facilitation exists at different periods of development in autism.

Atypical sensory processing is now recognised as a key component of an autism diagnosis. The integration of multiple sensory inputs (multisensory integration (MSI)) is thought to be idiosyncratic in autistic individuals and may have cascading effects on the development of higher-level skills such as social communication. Multisensory facilitation was assessed using a target detection paradigm in 45 autistic and 111 neurotypical individuals, matched on age and IQ. Target stimuli were: auditory (A; 3500 Hz tone), visual (V; white disk 'flash') or audiovisual (AV; simultaneous tone and flash), an

Assessment of temporal processing functions in early period cochlear implantation.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to compare the temporal processing performance of children with cochlear implant (CI) according to the age of implantation and to determine their relation with auditory perception scores. METHODS: In this study, 30 cochlear implant users and ten normal hearing children at 9 and 10 years were included. Children with cochlear implants are divided into two groups according to the age of implantation: group I includes participants whose implantation age is between 13 and 35 months (20 children), group II includes participants whose implantation age is between

The Role of the Lateral Intraparietal Area in (the Study of) Decision Making.

Over the past two decades, neurophysiological responses in the lateral intraparietal area (LIP) have received extensive study for insight into decision making. In a parallel manner, inferred cognitive processes have enriched interpretations of LIP activity. Because of this bidirectional interplay between physiology and cognition, LIP has served as fertile ground for developing quantitative models that link neural activity with decision making. These models stand as some of the most important frameworks for linking brain and mind, and they are now mature enough to be evaluated in finer detail a

Visuo-spatial cueing in children with differential reading and spelling profiles.

Dyslexia has been claimed to be causally related to deficits in visuo-spatial attention. In particular, inefficient shifting of visual attention during spatial cueing paradigms is assumed to be associated with problems in graphemic parsing during sublexical reading. The current study investigated visuo-spatial attention performance in an exogenous cueing paradigm in a large sample (N = 191) of third and fourth graders with different reading and spelling profiles (controls, isolated reading deficit, isolated spelling deficit, combined deficit in reading and spelling). Once individual variabilit

Behavioural evidence for separate mechanisms of audiovisual temporal binding as a function of leading sensory modality.

The ability to integrate auditory and visual information is critical for effective perception and interaction with the environment, and is thought to be abnormal in some clinical populations. Several studies have investigated the time window over which audiovisual events are integrated, also called the temporal binding window, and revealed asymmetries depending on the order of audiovisual input (i.e. the leading sense). When judging audiovisual simultaneity, the binding window appears narrower and non-malleable for auditory-leading stimulus pairs and wider and trainable for visual-leading pair

Context-dependent sequential effects of target selection for action.

Humans exhibit variation in behavior from moment to moment even when performing a simple, repetitive task. Errors are typically followed by cautious responses, minimizing subsequent distractor interference. However, less is known about how variation in the execution of an ultimately correct response affects subsequent behavior. We asked participants to reach toward a uniquely colored target presented among distractors and created two categories to describe participants' responses in correct trials based on analyses of movement trajectories; partial errors referred to trials in which observers

Comodulation masking release (CMR) in children and the influence of reading status.

PURPOSE: Research suggests that children with reading disabilities (RD) have difficulty processing temporal and spectral components of sounds. Comodulation masking release (CMR) measures a listener's ability to use temporal and spectral information in noise to identify a signal. The purpose of this study was to determine whether children with RD had difficulty identifying a signal in CMR stimuli. Child and adult performance was compared to assess the development of CMR. METHOD: Eighty-one 7- to 10-year-old children (30 with and 51 without RD) and 20 adults without RD listened to CMR stimuli t

Bihemispheric leftward bias in a visuospatial attention-related network.

Asymmetry of spatial attention has long been described in both disease (hemispatial neglect) and healthy (pseudoneglect) states. Although right-hemisphere specialization for spatial attention has been suggested, the exact neural mechanisms of asymmetry have not been deciphered yet. A recent functional magnetic resonance imaging study from our laboratory serendipitously revealed bihemispheric left-hemifield superiority in activation of a visuospatial attention-related network. Nineteen right-handed healthy adult females participated in two experiments of visual half-field presentation. Either f

Use of audiovisual information in speech perception by prelingually deaf children with cochlear implants: a first report.

OBJECTIVE: Although there has been a great deal of recent empirical work and new theoretical interest in audiovisual speech perception in both normal-hearing and hearing-impaired adults, relatively little is known about the development of these abilities and skills in deaf children with cochlear implants. This study examined how prelingually deafened children combine visual information available in the talker's face with auditory speech cues provided by their cochlear implants to enhance spoken language comprehension. DESIGN: Twenty-seven hearing-impaired children who use cochlear implants id

Metrical rhythm implicitly orients attention in time as indexed by improved target detection and left inferior parietal activation.

When we direct attentional resources to a certain point in time, expectation and preparedness is heightened and behavior is, as a result, more efficient. This future-oriented attending can be guided either voluntarily, by externally defined cues, or implicitly, by perceived temporal regularities. Inspired by dynamic attending theory, our aim was to study the extent to which metrical structure, with its beats of greater or lesser relative strength, modulates attention implicitly over time and to uncover the neural circuits underlying this process of dynamic attending. We used fMRI to investigat

Knowledge, attitude, and perception towards COVID-19 vaccinations among the adults in Rwanda: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Multiple vaccinations have received approval for the prevention of the coronavirus illness. Nevertheless, the sluggish vaccination rate is mostly attributed to the general population's limited understanding and unwillingness to accept the use of vaccinations. Thus, it is important to investigate the Rwandan population's knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions toward COVID-19 vaccines. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 370 participants from 11th to 17th February 2023. Demographic information was gathered, and knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of COVID-19 vacci

Improving vibration perception in a patient with type 2 diabetes and sensory peripheral neuropathy.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus (DM) and its related sensory peripheral neuropathy (SPN) are the biggest risk factors for foot ulcer formation and lower limb amputation. Reduced vibration perception results in less sensitivity to pressure and is a known risk factor for diabetic foot ulcers. Improving vibration perception in the feet of people with SPN could be protective against foot ulcers. The aim of this study was to determine if a therapeutic vibrating insole, used for 35 consecutive days, could improve vibration perception in a patient with type 2 DM. PATIENT PRESENTATION: The patient wa

Taste perception after lingual nerve repair.

PURPOSE: This retrospective study evaluates patients' perception of taste after lingual nerve injury and repair. It is hypothesized that return of taste is a distinct neurophysiologic phenomenon related to specialized taste physiology and it does not correlate with specific, objective sensory return. PATIENTS AND METHODS: During 1995 to 1996, 30 patients underwent microsurgical repair of lingual nerve injuries. Of these, 22 patients met the inclusion criteria for this study. Chart review documented the date and cause of injury, sensory examination, injury classification, procedures, operative

Environment sensing technology of underwater ROV based on artificial siding.

The underwater environment has the characteristics of high pressure and low temperature, which limits the performance of the sensor, and there are inaccuracies or distortions in the measurement data, resulting in errors and uncertainties in the environmental perception results. Therefore, the environment sensing technology of underwater ROV based on artificial side line is proposed. According to the artificial side line structure, the underwater terrain environment perception principle is constructed, and each characteristic parameter is counted. The underwater acoustic sensor network communic

Subjective visual horizontal during follow-up after unilateral vestibular deafferentation with gentamicin.

The subjective visual horizontal (SVH) was measured by means of a small, rotatable, luminous line in darkness in the upright head and body position and at 10, 20 and 30 degrees of tilt to the right and left before, and repeatedly during a follow-up period of 1 year after intratympanic gentamicin instillations in 12 patients with recurrent vertigo attacks. This treatment caused a loss of the bithermal caloric responses on the diseased side. Shortly after treatment there was a significant tilt of SVH towards the treated side (group mean = 10.6 degrees). Repeated testing made it possible to chara
