Tinea folliculorum complicating tinea of the glabrous skin: an important yet neglected entity.

Dermatophytes are capable of infecting the skin and its appendages such as nails and hairs producing a variety of clinical conditions. Hair invasion by dermatophytes is a key feature of tinea capitis and tinea barbae but not of tinea of glabrous skin. In this project, we studied the clinico-mycological aspects of follicular involvement in patients with dermatophytosis of the glabrous skin. In total, 16 patients, eight males and eight females, were included in the study. All were adults except for one girl. The disease durations ranged from one month to more than ten years. Fourteen (78.5%) had…

Trichophyton soudanense, Trichophyton violaceum, and Trichophyton tonsurans in Munich: Travel- and Migration-Related Cutaneous Fungal Infections.

INTRODUCTION: Trichophyton soudanense, Trichophyton violaceum, and Trichophyton tonsurans are considered rare pathogens in Germany. They are … h a peak in 2016 and 2017. T. soudanense was detected in 22 (8.9%) samples. A total of 46.7% of all tinea capitis cases were caused by one of these pathogens. CONCLUSION: In case of tinea capitis, a travel history should be performed and rare fungal infections should be considered in the differential diagnosis.

A 10-Year Study of Dermatophytoses in Isfahan, Iran.

Dermatophyte infections are very common worldwide and their epidemiological characteristics vary according to the geographical region and ha … r perforation test. Of 13,469 clinically suspected cases, 11.5% were affected with dermatophytoses. Tinea capitis was the most frequent form of infection (52.7%), followed by tinea corporis (24%), tinea pedis (8.9%). Trichophyton verrucosum was the most prevalent causative agent (40.6%), followed by T. mentagrophytes var. interdigitale (17.6%), Epidermophyton f …

Trichoscopic Evaluation of Focal Non-Cicatricial Alopecia in Egyptian Children.

INTRODUCTION: Dermoscopy is a noninvasive diagnostic tool that allows the recognition of morphologic structures not visible to the naked eye … obtained from their parents. RESULTS: The most prevalent diagnoses were alopecia areata (42%) and tinea capitis (40.5%), followed by trichotillomania (8%) and tractional alopecia (7%). Congenital triangular alopecia (1.5%) and patchy androgenetic alopecia (1%) were less common. Trichoscopy revealed distinct features in alopecia areata cases, such as short vel …

Molecular characterization and antifungal susceptibility profile of dermatophytes isolated from scalp dermatophyte carriage in primary school children in Arak city, Center of Iran.

OBJECTIVE: Asymptomatic carriage is a condition of positive dermatophyte scalp culture without signs and symptoms of tinea capitis. Carriers are the source of dermatophytes that are able to transfer fungal agents to other people. The aim of this study was evaluating asymptomatic dermatophyte scalp carriage among students of primary schools in Arak city. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sampling by a sterilized hairbrush from scalp was performed among 3174 students. Hairbrush was inoculated onto Mycosel agar plates. Dermatophyte isolates were identified by PCR-RFLP using MvaI enzyme. In vitro antifungal…

Superficial fungal infections. A practical guide for primary care physicians.

Clinicians who establish a proper diagnosis should have little difficulty managing dermatophyte infections. Diagnosis can be confirmed by direct microscopic examination with a potassium hydroxide preparation or by culture with the dermatophyte test medium. Safe, reliable antifungal therapy is available. Treatment will be more effective if antifungal therapy is not prescribed until fungal organisms have been identified and if topical steroids are not prescribed until fungal organisms have been excluded.

Etiology of dermatophytoses amongst children in northeastern Nigeria.

A survey of dermatophytoses was carried out amongst primary school children in Borno State, Nigeria, during February 1997 to January 1998. A total of 2,193 children aged 4-16 years were screened. Out of these, 154 (7.0%) were proved to be mycologically positive by microscopy, culture or both. Incidence was significantly higher (P <0.05) in young children aged 7-11 years (8.1%) and 4-6 years (6.9%) than in older children aged 12-16 years (3.6%). There was a significant difference in the incidence of dermatophytoses amongst children in urban and rural areas (P <0.05). Tinea capitis was the predo…

Skin diseases of children in Mali: a public health problem.

In order to estimate the importance as a public health problem of skin diseases, we investigated the prevalence and severity of skin diseases in a representative sample of children in Mali. 1817 children were randomly selected in 30 clusters by probability-proportional-to-size sampling in Koulikoro region. The mean prevalence (+/- 2 SD) of skin diseases was 34 +/- 4%. The most frequent dermatoses were pyoderma (12.3 +/- 1.6%), tinea capitis (9.5 +/- 2.5%), pediculosis capitis (4.7 +/- 1.4%), scabies (4.3 +/- 1.5%), and molluscum contagiosum (3.6 +/- 1%). The most troublesome dermatoses were sc…

Imposters of androgenetic alopecia: diagnostic pearls for the hair restoration surgeon.

It is crucial that hair restoration surgeons understand the basic clinical diagnosis and pathologic condition of other hair loss conditions that are not always amenable to successful hair transplantation. In this article nonscarring and scarring mimickers of androgenetic alopecia are discussed. Nonscarring conditions include alopecia areata, telogen effluvium, and tinea capitis. Some of the more common scarring alopecias include lichen planopilaris, frontal fibrosing alopecia, and central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. Less common inflammatory conditions include pseudopelade of Brocq, disco…

Trichotillomania associated with the "Friar Tuck sign" and nail-biting.

Trichotillomania is a form of traction alopecia resulting from compulsive repetitive removal of one's own hair. This entity can mimic the clinical appearance of many other forms of hair loss including alopecia areata, androgenetic alopecia, and tinea capitis. It is important to differentiate trichotillomania from other forms of alopecia because its treatment is quite different. We present three cases of trichotillomania demonstrating the "tonsure pattern" or "Friar Tuck sign" and onychophagia (nail-biting), which we describe as clinical identifying features of this syndrome.

A Case of Kerion Celsi due to Trichophyton tonsurans.

The patient was a 13-year-old boy who was a member of the judo club at his junior high school. Approximately 1 week prior to his presentation, he developed multiple erythematous pilaris papules on his occipital area and was treated by a local doctor. The erythematous lesions expanded to 10 × 10 cm, showing granulation with drainage and strong spontaneous pain. At this point, he visited our hospital. He was diagnosed with kerion celsi due to Trichophyton tonsurans by fungal examination. The patient was treated with terbinafine (125 mg/day) for 6 weeks, and a brush test at 6 weeks was negative.

Epidemiologic features and risk of scarring in pediatric patients with kerion celsi.

BACKGROUND: Kerion celsi represents the inflammatory extreme of tinea capitis, as a delayed hypersensitivity reaction to the causative dermatophyte. Data regarding prevalence, trends in pathogens, and risk factors for scarring are limited. OBJECTIVE: The main objective of the study is to assess clinical and epidemiologic features of children with kerion celsi and risk factors for scarring. METHODS: We reviewed medical records of pediatric patients with kerion celsi treated between January 2006 and July 2020. RESULTS: Among 80 patients, the prevalence of permanent alopecia was 27.5%. Patient…
