An incidental stone child, lithokelyphos, presented as an undiagnosed abdominal mass in a woman with cervical cancer. Lithopedion formation is an uncommon result of an abdominal pregnancy. The types of lithopedions as well as their method of formation and clinical features are reviewed. In addition, the computed tomographic features of lithopedions are presented.

Computed tomography (CT) is unparalleled for evaluation of the nasopharynx and the neck in comparison with other radiologic modalities. Its ability to demonstrate soft tissue and bone abnormalities has established its role as a primary method of radiologic diagnosis, frequently obviating the need for further radiologic elaboration. Furthermore, in many cases, CT provides distinction among inflammatory, neoplastic, and traumatic conditions.

Computertomography of the kidney is, in combination with the conventional non-invasive methods, a highly exact diagnostic process. It is very important especially in cases of tumours, bleeding, retention of urine in the kidneys and unilaterally quiescent kidneys. The use of boluscomputertomography and series--computertomography not only increases the exactness of diagnosis but should also yield information on functional dynamics.

The use of computed tomography in scanning the visceral cranium, which has become possible thanks to new technological developments, enables the exploration of new avenues in the diagnosis of inflammatory and especially tumorous changes in this region. On account of its fundamental advantages such as measurement of density, accurate determination of size, and visualization of the axial plane, this method is superior to the conventional methods known so far. In 93 patients examined in this manner, it was possible to determine the accurate topography, size and environment of the tumor. The advan…

A prospective computed tomography (CT) study of a group of patients suspected of having gallbladder disease was performed. Ten patients were evaluated who had gallbladder nonvisualization on two consecutive oral contrast medium administrations. Evaluation of the gallbladder and common bile duct by CT disclosed specific abnormalities including gallstones, unsuspected common bile duct obstruction, and acute and chronic cholecystitis. Additional information on the physiologic processes involved in gallbladder nonvisualization is offered.

Computed tomography of the chest wall has been mentioned in the literature, but the emphasis has been on evaluation of diseases of the pleura and mediastinum and depiction of metastatic nodules. The authors have attempted to demonstrate the usefulness of CT in the detection and treatment of chest wall disease and show that the incidence of involvement is great enough to warrant evaluation of the chest wall on all CT images of this region.

To demonstrate the potential impact of computed tomography on orthopaedics, a brief review was done of four generations of scanners and of one new development (assay of bone mineral in the spine) that is presently being researched. To assess the utility of the method in treating orthopaedic problems, the cases of 140 patients, including patients with congenital anomalies, tumors, infections, and traumatic lesions, were analyzed. In the majority of the patients the technique provided useful information, often unobtainable with any other technique.

In this paper we present our experience with computerized tomographic imaging of the pancreas, both in normal and abnormal conditions. Eight … atients with proven carcinoma of the pancreas, a pancreatic mass was seen in 24 (83%). Computerized tomography is clearly a valuable method for viewing both normal pancreatic anatomy and anatomical variations and pathologies.

Computed tomography (CT) permitted a much more detailed appraisal of laryngeal dysfunction in patients with blunt laryngeal trauma (8 cases) and iatrogenic injury caused by radiation therapy (7 cases), surgery (2 cases), or intubation (1 case). In thyroid cartilage fractures, the fragments may be widely displaced. The cricoid ring breaks in two places, frequently involving the signet. CT facilitates diagnosis of the mechanism of injury based on the site and extent of fractures. The patterns of distortion and fibrosis of the laryngeal cartilage following radiation therapy may be manifested as e…

CT scanning has proven efficacy for the demonstration of normal and altered anatomy of the soft tissues of the head, providing information not available with any other modality. The introduction of total body CT has enabled us to study the entire spine and its contents. This new modality is extremely useful in diagnosing a variety of abnormalities of the spine, including diastematomyelia. A case is presented and the application of CT scanning to the spine is discussed.

The value of computed tomography (CT) in cases of spinal dysraphism, spinal canal narrowing and widening, and spinal bony abnormalities is discussed. With further experience, CT may become a valuable modality for the diagnosis of spinal diseases.

Axial hypocycloidal tomography has been applied to the investigation of 168 patients with suspected pathology in the orbit. Of these 75 had histological or angiographic confirmation of a space occupying lesion, and 55 patients showed positive evidence of abnormality. The X-ray changes observed include osteolysis and hyperostosis of the bony walls of the orbit, enlargement of the orbit-local and generalized, soft tissue abnormalities, and changes in the optic canal and superior orbital fissure. The most important evidence of the presence of a tumour or granuloma in the orbit was given by a posi…

Fifty-three orbital lesions of various types were studied by computer tomography to assess the capabilities and limitations of this technique. Although CT scanning in ophthalmology is in its infancy, results showed that it is useful in the investigation of a number of pathological conditions, including congenital anomalies, arteriovenous malformations, bone lesions, trauma, inflammation, granulomas, pseudotumors, epidermoid cysts, and tumors arising in or near the optic nerve, behind the optic bulb, or in the lacrimal region, as well as changes following eye surgery.
