Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) often presents as typical symptoms such as heartburn or acid regurgitation. However, a subgroup of patients presents a collection of symptoms and signs that are not directly related to esophageal damage. These are known collectively as the extraesophageal manifestations of GERD, such as non-cardiac chest pain, laryngitis, chronic cough, hoarseness, asthma or dental erosion. They have a common pathophysiology, involving microaspiration of acid into the larynx and pharynx, and vagally mediated bronchospasm and laryngospasm. The role of extraesophageal reflu

Gastroesophageal reflux disease typically manifests as heartburn and regurgitation, but it may also present with atypical or extraesophageal symptoms, including asthma, chronic cough, laryngitis, hoarseness, chronic sore throat, dental erosions, and noncardiac chest pain. Diagnosing atypical manifestations of gastroesophageal reflux disease is often a challenge because heartburn and regurgitation may be absent, making it difficult to prove a cause-and-effect relationship. Upper endoscopy and 24-hour pH monitoring are insensitive and not useful for many patients as initial diagnostic modalities

The addition of tin to mouth rinses is, at least in vitro, a promising strategy for symptomatic therapy of dental erosion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the in situ efficacy of an experimental tin-containing fluoride solution on erosive tissue loss in human enamel and dentine. The study was a three-cell (7 days each) crossover design involving eight healthy participants. Samples were mounted on buccal shields of mandibular mouth appliances, which were worn for 24 h except during meals and drinks. Specimens were demineralised extraorally with 0.05 M citric acid (pH 2.3) for 6 × 5 min da

Orbital infection is a rare complication of odontogenic infections, mostly originating from maxillary teeth. In our case, we present one of the unusual routes by which an odontogenic infection of a lower molar tooth has spread into the orbit. A 67-year-old uncontrolled diabetic patient was referred to our hospital with a complaint of a swollen right masseteric region and orbital infection following a dental procedure on the right mandibular third molar. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging showed multiple abscesses localized in the masseteric and infratemporal spaces, extend

The gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the main causes of dental erosion. The aim of this case presented is to describe the prosthetic rehabilitation of a patient with GERD after 4 years of followup. A 33-year-old male patient complained about tooth sensitivity. The lingual surface of the maxillary anterior teeth and the cusps of the upper and lower posterior teeth presented wear. It was suspected that the feeling of heartburn reported by the patient associated with the intake of sports supplements (isotonics) was causing gastroesophageal changes. The patient was referred to a ga

This study reports on the causative factors of dental erosion in selected high- (n = 19) and low-erosion (n = 19) subgroups of a larger random sample (n = 95) of young male Saudi military inductees. By means of a questionnaire, the role of various possible factors related to oral health in general, and to dental erosion in particular, was assessed for each participant. Clinical examination included recordings of severity of dental erosion and fluorosis, presence of buccal cervical defects and first permanent molar 'cuppings', DMFT and DMFS, visible plaque index, and gingival bleeding index. In the management of localized posterior occlusal toothwear, care must be taken not only in determining whether the worn teeth are restorable, but also the desirable occlusal scheme. Assessments of the periodontal, endodontic, and coronal tooth tissues, and the occlusal relationship are necessary for a comprehensive treatment plan for worn posterior teeth.

OBJECTIVE: Psychiatric patients have increased rates of comorbid physical illness. There are less data on dental disease, especially decay, despite risk factors including lifestyle and psychotropic side effects such as xerostomia. We therefore undertook an umbrella review of all meta-analyses on the association between mental illness and oral health.
METHODS: We searched PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase and CINAHL. Articles were independently assessed. Outcomes were caries, periodontal disease, erosion, and partial or total tooth loss (eden

OBJECTIVE: This article presents a guide for the rehabilitation of patients with dental wear using a minimally invasive approach. It provides a structured treatment sequence based on the location and extent of wear, the disciplines involved, and the therapeutic approach. The LIT classification establishes a relationship between the magnitude of the lesion and the appropriate type and material of restoration.
OVERVIEW: Tooth wear (TW) is a progressive, non-carious loss of dental structure caused by erosion, attrition, and abrasion, commonly affecting young patients. Its multifactorial origin a

This study evaluated the effect of fluoride varnishes containing micrometric or nanosized sodium trimetaphosphate (TMP) on dentin erosive wear in vitro. Bovine root dentin blocks were selected by surface hardness and randomly divided into five experimental groups/varnishes (n = 20/group): placebo, 5% sodium fluoride (NaF); 5% NaF+5% micrometric TMP; 5% NaF+2.5% nanosized TMP; and 5% NaF+5% nanosized TMP. Half of the surface of all blocks received a single application of the assigned varnish, with subsequent immersion in artificial saliva for 6 h. Varnishes were then removed and the blocks were

Lichen planus (LP) is an inflammatory condition of the skin characterized clinically by purple, polygonal, pruritic papules and histopathologically by lymphocytic infiltrate at the dermoepidermal junction. Atypical hypertrophic, atrophic, and annular forms have also been described in the literature. We report a rare case of polymorphic LP in a 16-year-old male with a 10-year history of mildly pruritic, hyperpigmented lesions involving the trunk, extremities, genitalia, and scrotum. Clinical examination revealed a mix of classical LP papules, verrucous/rupoid plaques, annular porokeratosis-like

In this study we evaluated the effect of prenylated peanut stilbenoids on the growth, biofilm accumulation and acid production of the dental caries pathogen Streptococcus mutans. Prior research with the non-prenylated stilbenes, resveratrol and piceatannol, has shown that these molecules are active against S. mutans. Here we sought to determine if the addition of a prenyl group to the stilbene backbone increased anti-S. mutans activities. Two prenylated stilbenes, arachidin-1 and arachidin-3, were produced using a peanut hairy root production system. Compared to resveratrol and piceatannol, bo

This study aimed to analyse the impact of brushing on the protective effect of different fluoride solutions on enamel and dentin erosion. Bovine enamel and dentin specimens were rinsed once with TiF4, AmF, SnF2 (0.5 M F, 2 min) or water (control). Specimens were either left unbrushed or brushed with 10, 20, 50, 100 or 500 brushing strokes in an automatic brushing machine (2 N, non-fluoridated toothpaste slurry). Ten specimens per group were eroded with hydrochloric acid (HCl) (pH 2.3) for 60 s, and calcium release into the acid was determined by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, en
