Relative contribution of restorative treatment to tooth extraction in a teaching institution.

Teeth can be extracted due to multiple factors. The aim of this retrospective cross-sectional study was to identify the relative contribution of restorative treatments to tooth loss. The study reviewed records of 826 patients (1102 teeth). Patient's gender, age and education were obtained. In addition to the main reason for extraction (caries, periodontal disease, pre-prosthetic extraction, restorative failure and remaining root), the following information was collected about each extracted tooth: type, the status of caries if any (primary or secondary) and pulpal status (normal or reversible …

Commentary: A Translational Medicine Approach to Tooth Transplantation.

The autogenous tooth transplantation approach to replace missing teeth has been in use for a long time. Different surgical techniques have been developed to improve prognosis and longevity of transplanted teeth with complete root formation. Many factors reportedly affected short- and long-term success of the procedure: complications such as ankylosis and root resorption up to the tooth exfoliation have occurred frequently. Several studies have appeared on this issue over the years. However, outcomes of transplantations have not yet been conclusively determined as no randomized clinical trials

Adverse events of surgical extrusion in treatment for crown-root and cervical root fractures: a systematic review of case series/reports.

BACKGROUND: Crown-root and cervical root fractures constitute a restorative challenge due to sub-gingival position of the fracture margin. S … cal extrusion with an event rate of 30% (95% CI 24.6-36.7%). This is followed by low event rates of tooth loss (5%), slight mobility (4.6%), marginal bone loss (3.7%), and progressive root resorption (3.3%). No ankylosis occurred to any extruded tooth, while severe tooth mobility showed negligible overall event rate of 0.4%. CONCLUSION: The available eviden …

Micro-computed tomography of tooth tissue volume changes following endodontic procedures and post space preparation.

AIM: To compare the volume of hard tooth tissue lost after caries removal, access cavity preparation, root canal preparation, fibre post space and cast post preparation in carious premolar teeth. The null hypothesis tested was that there is no difference between the volumes of hard tooth tissue lost expressed as a percentage of the preoperative hard tooth tissue volume, after each operative procedure. METHODOLOGY: Twelve extracted human premolars with mesial or distal carious cavities penetrating into the pulp chamber were selected. Teeth were scanned using a microCT scanner. After each opera

Early perturbation of Wnt signaling reveals patterning and invagination-evagination control points in molar tooth development.

Tooth formation requires complex signaling interactions both within the oral epithelium and between the epithelium and the underlying mesenchyme. Previous studies of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway have shown that tooth formation is partly inhibited in loss-of-function mutants, and gain-of-function mutants have perturbed tooth morphology. However, the stage at which Wnt signaling is first important in tooth formation remains unclear. Here, using an Fgf8-promoter-driven, and therefore early, deletion of β-catenin in mouse molar epithelium, we found that loss of Wnt/β-catenin signaling completely dele

A cascading learning method with SegFormer for radiographic measurement of periodontal bone loss.

OBJECTIVE: Marginal alveolar bone loss is one of the key features of periodontitis and can be observed via panoramic radiographs. This study aimed to establish a cascading learning method with deep learning (DL) for precise radiographic bone loss (RBL) measurements at specific tooth positions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Through the design of two tasks for tooth position recognition and tooth semantic segmentation using the SegFormer model, specific tooth's crown, intrabony portion, and suprabony portion of the roots were obtained. The RBL was subsequently measured by length through these three ar

[Histological study of the change of pulp tissue during shedding of the deciduous tooth].

To understand the pulp change of root resorption of human deciduous teeth from a histological point of view, one hundred and twenty specimens were collected for study. The teeth (caries-free) were extracted for occlusal reason or because they exhibited various degrees of mobility and discomfort. The extent of root resorption was classified into five grades: Res. i, Res. 1/4, Res. 1/2, Res. 3/4 and Res. Co., according to Moorrees et al. and Haavikko. All teeth were fixed in 10% formalin (pH 7.2) immediately after extraction for 3-7 days. They were then decalcified for 14 days in 5% formic acid-

[Removal or retention of nonimpacted third molars].

Nonimpacted third molars (N-M3s) refer to the third molars (M3s) that completely erupt and reach the occlusal plane without rotation. Although the removal of unerupted M3s in young adults is generally approved by most dentists, the decision on removal or retention of N-M3s remains challenging as a result of unawareness of the potential harm of N-M3s. Recent studies suggested that N-M3s were associated with deteriorated effects to the health of adjacent teeth, including higher risks of caries and alveolar bone resorption. Therefore, regular monitoring and early clinical decision on N-M3s are es

Multidifferentiation potential of dental-derived stem cells.

Tooth-related diseases and tooth loss are widespread and are a major public health issue. The loss of teeth can affect chewing, speech, appearance and even psychology. Therefore, the science of tooth regeneration has emerged, and attention has focused on tooth regeneration based on the principles of tooth development and stem cells combined with tissue engineering technology. As undifferentiated stem cells in normal tooth tissues, dental mesenchymal stem cells (DMSCs), which are a desirable source of autologous stem cells, play a significant role in tooth regeneration. Researchers hope to reco…

Conventional avulsion versus less traumatic extraction of ankylosed roots with a magnetoelectric device in anterior maxillary areas.

The analysis aimed to compare two different single-tooth extraction surgical approaches in anterior maxillary areas of the ankylosed teeth: less traumatic magneto-electrical (mag) versus conventional tooth extraction (con) in minimizing the adverse effects on post-extractive sockets. Parameters of clinical interest such as intra-surgical fracture of the buccal bone plate, presence of postoperative inflammation, and application of stitches were acquired from medical records. The data were subjected to Pearson's χ2 analysis or to Fisher's exact test with significance at 0.05. Sixty-six hopeless

Complication Management of a Socket Shield Case After 6 Years of Function.

Maintaining soft and hard tissues around dental implants after tooth extraction is one of the major challenges in implant dentistry. After tooth extraction, the subsequent loss of bone and soft tissue is inevitable due to the partial resorption of the buccal bone plate. The recently described socket shield technique addresses the problem by maintaining the buccal piece of the tooth in the extraction socket in order to preserve the buccal bone. As with every new technique, specific complications, like infection of the buccal piece of the tooth, can occur. Herein, the authors present a clinical

Whole Tooth Regeneration: Can Animal Studies be Translated into Clinical Application?

Tooth loss leads to several oral problems and although a large number of treatments have been proposed to rehabilitate partially or totally edentulous patients, none of them is based on replacement of a missing tooth by a new natural whole tooth. In the field of tissue engineering, some animal models have been developed to regenerate a natural tooth in the oral cavity. This review shows the state of the art in whole tooth regeneration based on data from in vivo studies. A systematic scoping review was conducted to evaluate studies that described whole-tooth regeneration and eruption in the ora…
