Treatment of acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (Hori's nevus) using a combination of scanned carbon dioxide laser followed by Q-switched ruby laser.

BACKGROUND: Acquired bilateral nevus of Ota-like macules (Hori's nevus) is a dermal pigmented lesion commonly seen in middle-aged women of Asian descent. The Q-switched ruby laser (QSRL) has been used successfully to treat a variety of benign pigmented lesions. Multiple, sequential treatments are typically required for complete clearance of the dermal pigmented dermatoses. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to determine the efficacy of QSRL in the treatment of Hori's nevus and the beneficial effect of epidermal ablation using the scanned carbon dioxide (CO(2)) laser before QSRL. METHOD

Liraglutide administration in type 2 diabetic patients who either received no previous treatment or were treated with an oral hypoglycemic agent showed greater efficacy than that in patients switching from insulin.

AIMS/INTRODUCTION: Liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonist, is expected to provide a new treatment option for diabetes. However, the suitable timing of liraglutide administration in type 2 diabetic patients has not yet been clarified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We reviewed type 2 diabetic patients (n = 155) who visited the Osaka Red Cross Hospital for glycemic control, with administration of liraglutide at a dose of 0.6 mg (average glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c] level, 8.7 ± 0.1%). The effect of liraglutide based on the pretreatment status was compared. We also analyzed the backgroun

The effect of craving on retention and treatment switching under buprenorphine-naloxone and methadone models of care for non-heroin opioid use disorder: Exploratory analyses from a pragmatic, randomized controlled trial.

INTRODUCTION: Though opioid agonist therapies are the mainstay of treatment for opioid use disorder, treatment retention remains suboptimal. Improved prediction of who will remain in treatment could lead to improved treatment outcomes. Whether craving predicts reduced retention in treatment remains debated. We performed analyses to determine whether craving predicted treatment attrition or treatment switching in people with non-heroin opioid use disorder initiating opioid agonist therapy. METHODS: Our data came from the OPTIMA trial - a pan-Canadian, pragmatic, open-label, randomized controll…

Treatment Persistence Among Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor-experienced Patients With Ulcerative Colitis Switching to a Biologic With a Different Mode of Action or Cycling to Another Anti-Tumor Necrosis Factor Agent.

PURPOSE: In ulcerative colitis (UC), anti-tumor necrosis factor (TNF) agents often are first-line biologic therapy. Switching to a biologic with a different mode of action (ustekinumab and vedolizumab) or cycling to another anti-TNF agent (adalimumab, infliximab, and golimumab) is necessary if an initial anti-TNF fails. This study compared real-world persistence in patients with UC who switched to a biologic with a different mode of action or cycled with another anti-TNF after nonresponse to an anti-TNF. METHODS: Adults with UC treated with an anti-TNF, who switched or cycled (index date) bet

Comparison of the efficacy and safety between a low-fluence 1064-nm Q-switched neodymium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet laser and a conventional Q-switched 532-nm laser for the treatment of cafe-au-lait macules in 40 Chinese children: a prospective, randomized, parallel-controlled, evaluator-blinded trial.

Cafe-au-lait macules (CALMs) affect the appearance of patients and can result in serious psychological problems. Successful treatments without adverse effects remain challenging. We designed a prospective, randomized, controlled, evaluator-blinded trial on 40 pediatric patients to compare the efficacy between a low-fluence 1064-nm Q-switched Nd:YAG laser and a Q-switched Nd:YAG 532-nm laser for the treatment of solitary CALMs in children. We randomly assigned participants into 2 groups. We treated those in the first group with 3 sessions of 532-nm QS laser at 1-month intervals, and those in th

Combinatorial treatment for spinal muscular atrophy: An Editorial for 'Combined treatment with the histone deacetylase inhibitor LBH589 and a splice-switch antisense oligonucleotide enhances SMN2 splicing and SMN expression in Spinal Muscular Atrophy cells' on page 264.

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is a severe autosomal recessive motor neuron disease caused by the loss of SMN1, which encodes a protein essential for motor neuron survival. SMA patients have one or more copies of an alternate SMN gene, SMN2, which is nearly identical to SMN1. SMN2 differs at a single nucleotide from SMN1 which results in the skipping of exon 7 in the mRNA and produces an unstable protein (SMNΔ7). Therapeutic approaches that have been undertaken include (1) replacement of SMN1 by gene delivery mediated by adeno-associated virus serotype 9 (AAV9) (Zolgensma), (2) correction of th

Patient characteristics and treatment efficacy after switching to hypoxia-inducible factor-prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors from erythropoiesis-stimulating agents in non-dialysis-dependent chronic kidney disease patients: the Reach-J CKD cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Hypoxia-inducible factor-prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs) are likely to be effective in patients with anemia in chronic kidney disease (CKD) who are resistant to treatment with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents (ESAs). However, few studies assess HIF-PHIs in patients with elevated ERI who do not yet require hemodialysis. METHODS: This multicenter, prospective, observational study utilized data from the Reach-J study to explore the characteristics of Japanese patients with anemia in CKD (stage G3b-5) who switched from ESAs to HIF-PHIs. We also examined changes in hemoglobin
