[Food-borne trematodiases].

Food-borne trematodiases (flukes) are transmitted through the consumption of contaminated undercooked aquatic food. Infections are most prevalent in Southeast Asia and Latin America, but might occur anywhere due to food trade, international travel, human migration. Clinical manifestations are hepatobiliary, intestinal, and pleuropulmonary. The worse complication is development of cholangiocarcinoma. Efficacious drug therapy are available, however prevention control measures are essential to avoid transmission. Since 2015, trematodiases are included in the WHO program implemented to fight negle

Pathogenicity of Clinostomum complanatum (Digenea: Clinostomidae) in piscivorous birds.

The present study is focused on the pathogenicity of a parasitic digenea, Clinostomum complanatum among dead piscivorous birds, collected after mass mortalities in northern Iran. A total of 126 birds (15 species) were examined for parasitic infections. Birds of four species belong to the family Ardeidae were found to be infected with immature and mature worms. C. complanatum was more prevalent in Ardea purpurea followed by Nycticorax nycticorax, Egretta alba and Egretta garzetta. Pathological study revealed acute inflammation of the submucosa of the oral cavity and oesophagus which can lead to

The status of Petalocotyle Ozaki, 1934 (Digenea: Gyliauchenidae), including the description of two new species from acanthurid fishes in Queensland, Australia.

The status of Petalocotyle Ozaki, 1934 within the Gyliauchenidae Goto & Matsudaira, 1918 is reviewed. Two new species, P. adenometra from Prionurus microlepidotus (Amity Point, Queensland, Australia) and P. diverticulata from Acanthurus nigrofiuscus and A. lineatus (Heron Island, Queensland, Australia), are described. The body plan of Petalocotyle conforms to that of members of the Gyliauchenidae (oral sucker absent, well-developed pharynx, complex oesophagus and characteristic male terminal genitalia), indicating justifiable inclusion in this family. A new diagnosis is given for the genus, su

[A preliminary study on epidemiology of fasciolopsiasis in Tainan Hsien, south Taiwan].

Stool samples of 817 children (grades 4-6) from 3 primary schools, were collected and examined by the antiformin-ether concentration technique. Results showed no cases of Fasciolopsis were found from Liu-Ying primary school (Liu-Ying Hsiang), but infection rates of this fluke were found to be 13.0% and 3.5% for Ho-Chien and Tung-Hsing primary schools (Hsia-Ying Hsiang) respectively. Fourteen infected children had recent experience of eating raw water caltrops. On the other hand, only 8(21.6%) of 37 non-infected children had eaten raw water caltrops. Examination of intermediate host (Segmentina

Spirorchidiasis in loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta): pathology.

Loggerhead sea turtles (Caretta caretta) from the Atlantic seaboard (Florida to Massachusetts) were examined at the Marine Pathology Laboratory, University of Rhode Island, from March through December, 1980. Three genera of blood flukes (spirorchids) were found in 14 (33%) of the 43 turtles. Gross signs in heavily infected animals included cachexia, anemia and enteritis. Histopathological lesions were similar to those present in homeotherms with schistosomiasis. Granulomatous gastritis, enteritis, hepatitis, pneumonitis, and nephritis were present. Acute and chronic vasculitis accompanied meta
