Prevalence of infectious diseases in patients with autoimmune blistering diseases.

A long-term immunosuppressive treatment can provoke latent infections. Autoimmune blistering diseases (AIBD) are mostly treated with systemic immunosuppressive agents. To prevent the reactivation or exacerbation of existing latent infections, patients must be screened for infectious diseases before immunosuppressive treatments are initiated. However, the prevalence of infectious diseases in AIBD remains to be elucidated. To evaluate the necessity of screening infectious diseases in AIBD, we retrospectively reviewed the clinical records of 215 patients at a single center with AIBD for hepatitis

Hepatobiliary tuberculosis in the developing world.

BACKGROUND: Hepatobiliary tuberculosis is a challenging disease that poses diagnostic difficulties due to its resemblance to other etiologies. Delayed diagnosis may lead to inadequate treatment, thus necessitating an urgent need for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. AIM: To systematically review case reports on hepatobiliary tuberculosis, focusing on symptomatology, diagnostic procedures, management, and outcomes to provide patient safety and ensure an uneventful recovery. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted on PubMed from 1992 to 2022, using keywords such as hepatobiliar

CT and MRI in the diagnosis of tuberculosis.

The advent of CT and MRI imaging in the last two decades has redefined the approach and analysis of various diseases including tuberculosis. Tuberculosis afflicts hollow and solid viscera. Genitourinary, hepatobiliary and adrenal tuberculosis is uncommon in children. CT and MRI have however shown several advantages over conventional radiology and other imaging modalities in early diagnosis and follow-up of tuberculosis in different parts of the body.

[Vaccinations for travel--1991 status].

The increasing number of persons travelling to tropical and subtropical countries brings about a higher risk of infection with tropical diseases and of importation into non endemic areas. The following article deals with compulsory and recommended immunizations against tetanus, poliomyelitis, typhoid fever, hepatitis A, yellow fever, cholera, epidemic meningitis, hepatitis B, rabies and tuberculosis. Special problems such as vaccination schedules and vaccination in children are also discussed in detail.

Infections acquired in clinical laboratories in Utah.

We reviewed laboratory-acquired infections occurring in Utah from 1978 through 1982. Written and telephone interviews of supervisors of 1,191 laboratorians revealed an estimated annual incidence of 3 laboratory-acquired infections per 1,000 employees. Infections, in order of frequency, included hepatitis B (clinical cases), shigellosis, pharyngitis, cellulitis, tuberculosis (skin test conversion), conjunctivitis, and non-A, non-B hepatitis. One-half of large laboratories (over 25 employees), but only 12% of smaller laboratories, reported infections. The annual incidence, however, at smaller la

KLF15-Cyp3a11 Axis Regulates Rifampicin-Induced Liver Injury.

Rifampicin (RFP) has demonstrated potent antibacterial effects in the treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis. However, the serious adverse effects on the liver intensively limit the clinical usage of the drug. Deacetylation greatly reduces the toxicity of RFP but also retains its curative activity. Here, we found that Krüppel-like factor 15 (KLF15) repressed the expression of the major RFP detoxification enzyme Cyp3a11 in mice via both direct and indirect mechanisms. Knockout of hepatocyte KLF15 induced the expression of Cyp3a11 and robustly attenuated the hepatotoxicity of RFP in mice. In contra

Subacute tuberculous otitis media complicated by petrositis and meningitis.

AIMS: The aim of our case study is to illustrate diagnostic and therapeutic difficulties as well as gravity related to tuberculous otitis media with intracranial complications. CASE PRESENTATION: A diabetic male patient of 65 years old was treated for subacute otitis media with mixed hearing loss. Early bacteriologic samples from ear exudates revealed opportunistic pathogens. Clinical evolution after four months was marked by the appearance of mastoiditis with facial paralysis. The patient presented petrositis and bilateral laryngeal paralysis with lymphocytic meningitis after six and eight m

[Managing the adverse events of antitubercular agents].

Tuberculosis, an infectious disease which is curable by following a course of antibiotics, remains a major public health issue on a global scale. A therapeutic strategy has been standardised which calls for the use of four antibiotics. These are generally well-tolerated but, individually and in combination, frequently have undesirable effects. Isoniazid may cause hepatic toxicity and an also be an asue of peripheral neuropathy. Rifampin is a strong hepatic enzyme inducer and can be responsible for severe immunoallergic reactions in the case of interrupted treatment. Pyrazinamide sometimes resu

Leveraging Health Department Capacities, Partnerships, and Health Insurance for Infectious Disease Response in Massachusetts, 2014-2018.

Policies facilitating integration of public health programs can improve the public health response, but the literature on approaches to integration across multiple system levels is limited. We describe the efforts of the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to integrate its HIV, viral hepatitis, sexually transmitted infection (STI), and tuberculosis response through policies that mandated contracted organizations to submit specimens for testing to the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory; co-test blood specimens for HIV, hepatitis C virus (HCV), and syphilis; integrate HIV, viral

Wild boars as sources for infectious diseases in livestock and humans.

Wild boars (Sus scrofa) are indigenous in many countries in the world. These free-living swine are known reservoirs for a number of viruses, bacteria and parasites that are transmissible to domestic animals and humans. Changes of human habitation to suburban areas, increased use of lands for agricultural purposes, increased hunting activities and consumption of wild boar meat have increased the chances of exposure of wild boars to domestic animals and humans. Wild boars can act as reservoirs for many important infectious diseases in domestic animals, such as classical swine fever, brucellosis

Spectrum of illness in international migrants seen at GeoSentinel clinics in 1997-2009, part 2: migrants resettled internationally and evaluated for specific health concerns.

BACKGROUND: Increasing international migration may challenge healthcare providers unfamiliar with acute and long latency infections and diseases common in this population. This study defines health conditions encountered in a large heterogenous group of migrants. METHODS: Migrants seen at GeoSentinel clinics for any reason, other than those seen at clinics only providing comprehensive protocol-based health screening soon after arrival, were included. Proportionate morbidity for syndromes and diagnoses by country or region of origin were determined and compared. RESULTS: A total of 7629 migra

[Isolated rectal tuberculoma diagnosed after endoscopic surgery: a case report].

Intestinal tuberculosis commonly affects the ileocecal area and the terminal ileum, and is extremely rare in the rectum, with isolated rectal involvement being even rarer. This paper described a case of an isolated rectal tuberculoma in a female patient of 44 years old, Yi ethnicity, who was admitted to the hospital with abdominal distension and constipation. She had a history of hepatitis B virus infection. A colonoscopy revealed a rectal mass, and an endoscopic resection was performed. Post-operative pathological examination confirmed rectal tuberculosis, with no evidence of extra-rectal tub

Benefit-risk considerations in preventive treatment for tuberculosis in elderly persons.

Of 2135 elderly residents of nursing homes in Arkansas (mean age, 79.4 years) who have been treated with isoniazid for prevention of tuberculosis, data from 1935 were suitable for analysis. About 12 months of therapy was successfully completed in 1600 persons. Therapy could not be completed in 84 persons (4.4%) because of incipient hepatic toxicity and in 116 (6.0%) because of other types of drug intolerance. Although 135 persons (7.0%) died during the course of therapy, no evidence was found that isoniazid contributed to any death. The ratio of benefit (reduction of risk for tuberculosis) to

Infections in British clinical laboratories 1980-81.

This survey through the Association of Clinical Pathologists was continued and extended for 1980-81, with the help of the Institute of Medical Laboratory Sciences. Hepatitis maintained a low attack rate of 26/100 000 person-years, including only three cases of hepatitis B probably attributable to laboratory work (attack rate 9). Nineteen cases of tuberculosis (attack rate 56) included 14 of probable occupational origin (attack rate 41) half of which involved post-mortem or mortuary work. Thirteen bacterial infections of the bowel (attack rate 38, predominantly shigellosis) involved almost excl

Impact of COVID-19 in patients with concurrent co-infections: A systematic review and meta-analyses.

The burden and impact of secondary superadded infections in critically ill coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients is widely acknowledged. However, there is a dearth of information regarding the impact of COVID-19 in patients with tuberculosis, HIV, chronic hepatitis, and other concurrent infections. This review was conducted to evaluate the consequence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection in patients with concurrent co-infections based on the publications reported to date. An extensive comprehensive screening was conducted using electronic databases u

Screening for infectious diseases among newly arrived asylum seekers, Bavaria, Germany, 2015.

Background and aimAs a consequence of socioeconomic and political crises in many parts of the world, many European Union/European Economic Area (EU/EEA) countries have faced an increasing number of migrants. In the German federal state of Bavaria, a mandatory health screening approach is implemented, where individuals applying for asylum have to undergo a medical examination that includes serological testing for HIV and hepatitis B, screening for tuberculosis, and until September 2015, stool examination for Salmonella spp. and Shigella spp.. Methods: Data from mandatory screening of all first-
