Traditional medicine usage in rural Ugandan population for day-to-day health care needs is close to 90%. Women and children form the bulk of the people reliant on herbal medicine. This study was undertaken to document how ethnomedical folklore aids childbirth in rural western Uganda by conducting field surveys, discussions and interviews with the resource users (mothers) and health providers (traditional birth attendants). Health surveys revealed that over 80% of childbirths are conducted at home by using herbal remedies in Bushenyi district. Seventy-five plants have been recorded for usage in…

This study examined rates and predictors of self-reported HIV testing and willingness to test among married men aged 15-59 in Uganda. The data are nationally representative and drawn from the 2000-01 Uganda Demographic and Health Survey. The results of multiple regression analyses indicate that knowledge about AIDS, a history of paying for sex, spousal communication about HIV prevention, secondary or higher education, household wealth, and neighbourhood knowledge of a test site are associated with an increased likelihood of HIV testing. The higher the frequency of injection use in the past 3 m…

Two cases of intestinal obstruction due to Ascaris lumbricoides infection are reported from Ishaka Adventist Hospital, in south western Uganda. One was a male aged two and a half years and another was a female aged twenty. They were both treated surgically with good results. A review of the literature also revealed that intestinal obstruction due to A. lumbricoides is a common complication, though other surgical and nutritional complications also seem to be common, they are less reported.

OBJECTIVE: To estimate the most up-to-date price and expenditure elasticities of demand for cigarettes, beer and soda in Uganda to inform the optimal design of health taxes and contribute to reducing the burden of non-communicable diseases while increasing government tax revenue.
METHODS: We used eight waves of the nationally representative Uganda National Panel Survey (2005/2006–2019/2020) and applied the Deaton demand framework, which exploited spatial price variation while correcting for quality substitution and measurement error in unit values. We adjusted the basic model for possible bia…

Meningitis affects over 2.5 million people worldwide, primarily within resource-limited regions of the meningitis belt of Africa. In 2017, we implemented a cryptococcal meningitis (CM) diagnosis and treatment program (CM-DTP) designed to improve CM outcomes. In 2021, a meningitis diagnosis and treatment program (MEN-DTP) began to include all etiologies of meningitis to assess the impact of expanded diagnosis and treatment of meningitis. We conducted a retrospective study utilizing clinical records from 1443 adult patients admitted to Lira Regional Referral Hospital (LRRH) over three time perio

INTRODUCTION: Tsetse flies (genus Glossina ) are biting insects that transmit human and animal trypanosomiases across sub-Saharan Africa, and sustainable vector control depends on understanding dispersal barriers and reinvasion routes. Despite major progress toward elimination, Uganda remains at risk for both human forms of the disease ( Trypanosoma brucei gambiense and T. b. rhodesiense ) and planners still lack reliable maps of tsetse movement and reinvasion risk.
METHODS AND RESULTS: We address this gap with machine-learning landscape genetics and species distribution models, integrating e…

In regions where both monkeypox virus (MPXV) and varicella zoster virus (VZV) are co-circulating, overlapping clinical manifestations can complicate clinical diagnosis. During the MPXV outbreak declared in Uganda in July, 2024, symptomatic suspected cases tested PCR negative for Mpox. To determine the cause of symptoms, we employed metagenomic sequencing wit…

BACKGROUND: Maintaining the physical and psychological well-being of healthcare workers (HCWs) is crucial for health system resilience. In sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Uganda, HCWs faced significant challenges during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, compounded by pre-existing resource constraints. This study investigated challenges faced by HCWs at a designated COVID-19 hospital ('the Hospital') and explored determinants of maintaining healthcare personnel's motivation during the COVID-19 pandemic in Uganda.
METHODS: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted at…

Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is a tick-borne disease endemic to many regions of Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia and the Balkans. Caused by the CCHF virus (CCHFV), CCHF has been a recognized cause of illness in Uganda since the 1950s and recently, more intensive surveillance suggests CCHFV is widely endemic within the country. Most surveillance has been focused on the Ugandan cattle corridor due to the risk of CCHFV exposure associated with livestock practices. Here we evaluated the seroprevalence of CCHFV in several Southern Ugandan communities outside the cattle corridor com…

INTRODUCTION: Cancer is the second leading cause of mortality with over 19 million cases and 10 million deaths worldwide. Available data on cancer patterns in Uganda are through modelling of data from two population-based cancer registries (PBCRs) representing only about 10% of the cancer situation in Uganda. This study sought to determine the common types of cancer among adults and children in Arua District over a 5-year period (2017-2021).
METHODS: Retrospective cohort chart review and 'catchment population approach' were employed. All newly diagnosed cancer patients from Arua between 2017 …
