We report two observations of antenatal diagnosis of Apert syndrome. This uncommon genetic disorder suggest an autosomal dominant inheritance, but almost all cases described are sporadic; the responsible gene is yet not located. Ultrasonographic detection is difficult, based on the following signs: brachycephalic skull (unusually detected), flat facial profile with a nasal bridge depression, tall appearance of the forehead (inconstant), total bilateral and symmetrical syndactylies of the hands and feet. At last we present our arguments for medical abortion, when this disorder is detected.

The ability of ultrasonic tissue characterization to differentiate and classify benign and malignant breast tissues in vivo in patients with palpable breast masses and in vitro in excised breast tissue was evaluated. One-hundred and twenty-four in vivo and 89 in vitro studies were performed using a technique of UTC based on parameters from the power spectrum of backscattered echoes. The benefits of routine use of ultrasound dating of pregnancy have been questioned. With ultrasound dating, the expected date of delivery is often postponed later than calculated. This means that true post-term pregnancies may be undetected and second-trimester determination of gestational age could represent a risk to the infants' health. This possibility has been assessed in a population of ultrasound screened women with optimal conditions for dating the pregnancy by Naegeles rule. No perinatal complications due to undetected post-term pregnancies were found.

Results of standard X-ray tomography, computed tomography and ultrasonic tomography (UT) used for detecting mediastinal metastases from lung cancer were compared in 50 patients who were later operated on. Eighty patients with roentgenographic evidence of mediastinal abnormalities were examined with ultrasonography. Fifty-four lesions were malignant, and 26 lesions were benign. The authors report two cases of achondrogenesis, the first of which was diagnosed in utero. Ultrasonographic abnormalities suggested the diagnosis, which was confirmed radiographically. The diagnosis of achondrogenesis in utero made it possible to avoid a Cesarian. It is always difficult to extract the malformed fetus. The histopathology findings make it possible to codify this rare type of congenital and lethal chondrodysplasia. Achondrogenesis is probably inherited in a recessive and autosomic fashion.

Ultrasonic surgical aspiration is a useful technique for safe and accurate tissue removal. This study was conducted to evaluate its role in noninvasive vulvar disease. From December 1988 to March 1990, 27 patients underwent ultrasonic surgery; nine patients had vulvar intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) and 18 had condylomata acuminata. The article deals with the results of ultrasonic examination (USE) of 39 patients with secondary edema of the lower extremities. The authors developed a USE method which yields objective data characterizing changes of the structure, thickness, boundaries, and firmness of the soft tissues in lymphedema of the lower extremities of various severity. It was established that lymphostasis produced a characteristic ultrasonic pattern, which, as claimed by the author, may be used in differential diagnosis of lymphatic and venous edema of the extremities.

Data on the studies of the blood flow in finger vessels in 45 patients with Raynaud's disease by means of ultrasonic dopplerography and photoplethysmography are given. The control group consisted of 30 persons. The use of a cryotest showed significant differences in arterial segmental blood flow of the hand fingers in patients with Raynaud's disease and in those of the control group. The mentioned methods are noninvasive, give sufficiently informative results providing an objective assessment of the nature of vascular disorders in Raynaud's phenomenon of different genesis.

In 60 cases intracapsular resection of goiter was performed by using ultrasonic aspirator. The superior pole vessels and the inferior thyroid artery were not touched, the recurrent laryngeal nerve was not identified. Minimal hemorrhage in the intra- and postoperative period, operation time saving in comparison with conventional subtotal thyroidectomy, no temporary and no permanent damage to the recurrent laryngeal nerve and no wound infection were observed.
