Eighty-seven patients and 60 normal children were studied to determine the upper limit of the renal pelvic size in children and its relation to disease and age. The renal pelves were all measured by ultrasonography. Further radiologic examinations were performed on the disease group to confirm the final diagnosis. Ultrasound has proved to be very accurate in evaluating children with common urologic problems such as renal obstruction and urinary infection and in screening for uropathology among children with siblings known to have urologic disease. A 2 year (1986-1987) retrospective study was done to evaluate the usefulness of ultrasonography in the detection of urinary tract abnormalities in urinary tract infection. 107 patients who presented to the Paediatric Department of the Singapore General Hospital with urinary tract infection were studied. 79 patients underwent ultrasonography of which 17 (21%) were found to have abnormalities. A group of 24 patients with perforated gallbladder operated upon between 1980 and 1987 was compared with a group of 21 patients operated upon in 1982 due to uncomplicated acute cholecystitis in order to find out whether it was possible to use some specific sonographic signs to find the patients at risk of perforation. Free fluid and fluid collections close to the gallbladder fossa were found in 9 patients. Two patients are presented, both of whom were admitted to hospital because of abdominal pains. In both patients, ultrasonography showed gallstones in the lower abdomen and in the small bowel loops were found to be dilated. In both cases it was possible to diagnose the gallstone ileus by ultrasonography and to mark the abdomen as a guide to the surgeon.

A total of 43 infertile patients with hysterosalpingographic diagnosis of bifid uterus underwent sonography and subsequent laparoscopy/hysteroscopy to evaluate the capacity of ultrasound to demonstrate the peritoneal profile of the malformed uteri correctly. In selection for esophageal cancer treatment, it is necessary to evaluate the tumor stage. We have used endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for diagnosis of the depth of cancer invasion and the presence of lymph node metastasis since 1983. The EUS image of the normal esophageal wall showed 5 layers. In all, 222 cases of esophageal cancer were examined with EUS, and a radical operation was performed on 139. Ultrasonography was used preoperatively in 21 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism in an effort to locate enlarged parathyroid glands. It indicated the presence of a solitary mass compatible with a parathyroid adenoma in 14 patients. Intraoperative ultrasonography was used in 37 patients during surgery for suspected liver tumors. The size, number, and site of the lesions were determined together with the relationship of the tumor to the intrahepatic vessel, as well as possible small daughter lesions within the liver. Pericholecystic abscess is a serious complication of cholecystitis. The authors ultrasonographically identified abnormalities of the posterior fossa associated with meningomyelocele (Arnold-Chiari type II malformation), Dandy-Walker malformation, extracerebellar hemorrhage, and post-hemorrhagic enlargement of the fourth ventricle.
