Uterine arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is a rare, but potentially life-threatening condition. Acquired fistulae may occur as a result of trauma or instrumentation, endometrial carcinoma, gestational trophoblastic disease, and intrauterine devices (IUDs). Herein the authors present the case of a 33-year-old woman with a uterine AVF developing after uterine perforation during the placement of a levonorgestrel IUD. The fistula was diagnosed using color Doppler ultrasonography and angiography and the treatment was conducted by minimally invasive approach using uterine artery embolization.

Various anatomic anomalies have been considered the causes of nutcracker syndrome (NCS). Posterior NCS refers to the condition, in which vascular narrowing was secondary to the compression of the retroaortic left renal vein while it is crossing between the aorta and the vertebral column. Here, we report an unusual case of posterior NCS associated with a complicated malformation of the interrupted left inferior vena cava with azygos continuation and retroaortic right renal vein, diagnosed by both color Doppler ultrasonography and CT angiography.

Aneurysms of the vein of Galen (AVG) represent less than 1% of all intracranial arteriovenous malformations. Two cases of prenatal diagnosis made by color Doppler ultrasonography at 32 weeks of gestation are reported. Both cases presented with antenatal mild cardiomegaly and both developed severe cardiac failure in the neonatal period. Embolization was unsuccessful and both infants died. These cases highlight the need for a careful evaluation of the time and mode of delivery; embolization must be performed after a fully informed decision.

Varices in the round ligament are very rare and have only been reported in pregnant women as an inguinal mass normally detected in the third trimester of gestation. B-mode and Doppler color ultrasonography are fundamental tools in the diagnosis, because they make it possible to reach a conclusive diagnosis and to rule out other clinically possible inguinal masses. Although primary cardiac tumors are extremely rare, their prenatal and neonatal management is very important because fetal arrhythmia is a frequent complication and such tumors may be the only manifestation of tuberous sclerosis. We present 2 cases of fetal cardiac tumor in which cardiac function was assessed by color Doppler ultrasonography. In both cases, there was no evidence of tuberous sclerosis or cardiac failure and tumor regression was noted 8 months after birth. Ultrasonographic examination of fetal cardiac function was useful in the management of these tumors.

Fast scan magnetic resonance imaging, color Doppler ultrasonography, and magnetic resonance angiography were used to demonstrate the uteroplacental hemodynamics in rhesus monkeys. "Jets" of maternal blood spurting into the placenta were observed with, or without, the use of a contrast medium from 114 days to the term of pregnancy. Cumulative intravenous doses of cocaine hydrochloride brought about changes in the sequences of imaging of the maternal blood inflow to the placenta. These methods appear suitable for non-invasive monitoring of the effects of drugs on placental function.
