The ultrastructural study of the eyes in seven patients affected with I-cell disease (mucolipidosis type II) revealed important changes in the corneal, scleral, and uveal fibroblasts, while other cells were rarely involved. This explains the inconstant corneal clouding and the absence of ophthalmoscopic abnormalities clinically. At any moment of a patient's life, conjunctival biopsy specimens show characteristic alterations and allow the rapid and secure diagnosis of I-cell disease. This examination should be widely used in the screening of lysosomal diseases.

Detailed analysis of ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM) scanogrammes of 232 patients (232 eyes), aged 4-78 years old, with various uveal lesions was performed including comparison with morphologic study of specimens obtained after tumor removal. Results of the study showed UBM to allow to obtain objective data on location, configuration, size and structure of lesions of iris, ciliary body and preequatorial choroid. In a number of cases UBM virtually is the only option of vital visualization of the whole tumor.

The development of the human scleral spur and the role of the scleral spur in human and monkey eyes were studied by measuring the height of the scleral spur, the thickness of the uveal meshwork and the thickness of the longitudinal ciliary muscle. In an attempt to study how the tension of the ciliary muscle is transmitted to the inner wall of the Schlemm's canal, interconnections within the trabecular meshwork were also studied. Multiple myeloma is a malignancy of the cells of the immune system that frequently involves the eye. Cysts of the ciliary body have been reported in 33-50% of myeloma patients, and retinal vascular lesions have been reported in up to 66%. Corneal and orbital involvement is less common. In this review, systemic and immunologic aspects of multiple myeloma are outlined and ocular manifestations are illustrated.

We analyzed 18 explanted 91Z anterior chamber lenses by light and scanning electron microscopy. Intermittent touch of the lens loops to the posterior corneal surface and the anterior chamber angle may have occurred. A 65-year-old woman had been observed for more than four years with bilateral chronic nongranulomatous uveitis and vitreous clouding of unknown cause. Her death was from reticulum cell sarcoma of the brain (microglioma). Both eyes were obtained post mortem.
