Genetic background of acute anterior uveitis.

To determine the hereditary pattern of acute anterior uveitis, we examined seven families-one family with four cases, one family with three cases, and four families with two cases of acute anterior uveitis. A total of 16 patients with uveitis and 28 relatives underwent ocular examinations and serologic determination of HLA antigens, protease inhibitor alpha 1-antitrypsin typing, and X-ray examination of sacroiliac joints. Sacroiliitis was found in 11 of 16 patients (68.8%) and incomplete Reiter's disease in seven of 16 (43.8%). HLA-B27 antigen was found in all patients with uveitis and in six …

Sympathetic uveitis after trauma and vitrectomy.

A case is describes in which the earliest clinical manifestations of sympathetic uveitis that occurred after trauma and pars plana vitrectomy were confined primarily to the retina, retinal pigment epithelium, and choroid posteriorly, and resembled focal lesions of acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy. Similar focal lesions were noted on gross examination of the enucleated inciting eye. Histopathological examination revealed that these lesions were caused by focal choroidal granulomas and overlying Dalen-Fuchs nodules. Sympathetic ophthalmia was also noted in four other pat…

Anterior uveitis in juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

The ocular and systemic characteristics of 160 patients with anterior uveitis and seronegative juvenile rheumatoid arthritis are reviewed. Chronic uveitis occurred in 131 patients, 76% of whom were girls. Both eyes were involved in 70% of the cases. Band keratopathy occurred in 41% of the eyes, cataract in 42%, and secondary glaucoma in 19%. Only 11 patients had uveitis before the onset of arthritis. Notable correlations included a pauciarticular onset of arthritis in 95% of the patients, and positive tests for antinuclear antibody in 82%. Of 29 patients with acute anterior uveitis, 27 were bo…

Phenotype of Innate Immune Cells in Uveitis Associated with Axial Spondyloarthritis- and Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis-associated Uveitis.

Purpose: To analyze circulating immune cells in patients with anterior uveitis (AU) associated to axial spondyloarthritis (SpA), or juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA).Methods: Venous blood samples were collected from healthy controls (n = 16), and either SpA (n = 19) or JIA (n = 23) patients with associated anterior uveitis (AU) during active flare, or after ≥3 months of inactivity. Frequencies of CD56+, MHC-I+, and S100A9+ monocytes, CCR7+ dendritic cells, CD56+dim natural killer (NK) cells and CD3+CD56bright T-cells were analyzed via flow cytometry. Serum S100A8/A9 levels were determined vi…

Injectable Fluocinolone Acetonide Long-Acting Implant for Noninfectious Intermediate Uveitis, Posterior Uveitis, and Panuveitis: Two-Year Results.

PURPOSE: To determine the effect of an injectable fluocinolone acetonide implant (FAi) in eyes with noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, or panuveitis. DESIGN: Noncomparative, interventional, dose-randomized, dose-masked, prospective, individual, investigator-sponsored investigational new drug study. PARTICIPANTS: Eleven eyes of 11 participants with a history of recurrent noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior, or panuveitis. METHODS: Participants were randomized to receive either a low- or a high-dose FAi. Eyes were observed on day 0 (day the implant was injected) …

Uveitis in Behçet disease in a tertiary center over 25 years: the KKESH Uveitis Survey Study Group.

PURPOSE: To describe the features of Behçet-associated uveitis over a 25-year period. DESIGN: Retrospective observational case series. METHODS: A chart review of patients with Behçet-associated uveitis who were evaluated from January 1986 to December 2011 at King Khaled Eye Specialist Hospital, Saudi Arabia. Demographic data, symptoms, type of uveitis, treatment, and complications were evaluated. The main outcome measures were presenting symptoms, types of uveitis, treatment, and complications. RESULTS: There were 132 patients (232 eyes; 102 male [77.3%]) evaluated with age of onset of 36.9…

Drug-induced tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis syndrome with posterior uveitis resembling acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy.

PURPOSE: To report the occurrence of acute posterior multifocal placoid pigment epitheliopathy (APMPPE)-like posterior uveitis as part of the ocular manifestation of tubulointerstitial nephritis and uveitis (TINU) syndrome. METHODS: A 54-year-old previously healthy woman received oral ibuprofen and dipirone because of high fever and malaise. Three days after being started on this treatment, she developed bilateral posterior uveitis resembling APMPPE accompanied by anterior segment inflammation in the context of acute renal nephritis and maculopapular skin rash probably related to drug exposur…

Therapeutic vitrectomy for non-infectious uveitis.

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (intervention). The objectives are as follows: To evaluate the benefits and harms of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), with or without adjunctive medical therapy, compared with medical therapy alone, for non-infectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, or panuveitis complicated by persistent inflammation or cystoid macular oedema (CMO).

Non-Neoplastic Disorders Mimicking Anterior Uveitis.

Anterior uveitis, in which the anterior chamber is the primary site of inflammation, is the most frequently encountered form of uveitis. However, several non-neoplastic entities can closely mimic its clinical presentation, posing significant diagnostic challenges. This narrative review focuses on these non-malignant conditions that simulate anterior uveitis and may mislead clinicians in routine practice. Differentiating true inflammatory cells from pigment granules in the anterior chamber can be difficult, often leading to misdiagnosis. Disorders such as Bilateral Acute Iris Depigmentation (BA…

Hypertensive Anterior Uveitis Following Intravitreal Faricimab.

PURPOSE: Describe findings of three cases of culture and PCR negative hypertensive anterior uveitis following intravitreal faricimab. METHODS: This is a case series of three patients undergoing treatment for diabetic macular edema (DME) or neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD). Data collected included visual acuity, intraocular pressure (IOP), slit lamp examination (SLE), anterior chamber (AC) tap, vitreous tap with culture, and fluorescein angiography (FA). RESULTS: Three patients developed hypertensive uveitis following repeated intravitreal faricimab injections for DME or nA…

Noninfectious uveitis: Management with biologic agents.

Uveitis is an inflammatory condition involving the iris, ciliary body, and choroid, and it represents a significant cause of vision loss in both children and adults. The primary goals of uveitis management are to control inflammation, prevent recurrences, and minimize structural damage and subsequent visual impairment. Currently, corticosteroids remain the mainstay of therapy for noninfectious uveitis. In patients with sight-threatening disease, immunosuppressive or steroid-sparing agents are commonly employed. However, for individuals who are intolerant of or refractory to corticosteroids and…
