We report a 60-year-old case diagnosed as the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis with patulous eustachian tube (ET). To our knowledge, this is the first case report of the amyotrophic lateral sclerosis complicating patulous ET in the literature, demonstrating the movement of the tympanic membrane, the pharyngeal orifice of the ET and abnormal movement of the uvula because of paralysis of the soft palate on video.

We report a case of parapharyngeal abscess in a five-years-old girl, secondary to a local extension of a peritonsillar abscess. The typical signs of peritonsillar abscess, medially displaced tonsil and displacement of the uvula toward the opposite side, were either less pronounced than usual. Angioneurotic edema involving the uvula is sometimes referred to as Quincke's edema. The term angioneurotic edema describes several closely related diseases manifested by recurrent, acute edema of the skin or mucosa. We report a case of uvular edema secondary to food allergy, treated successfully with steroids. A short review of angioneurotic edema and its management is also presented.

We report on a patient born to normal and nonconsanguineous parents and presenting with strikingly malformed ears, abnormalities of the condyle of the mandible, micrognathia, small mouth, and cleft uvula. The similarity of our patient with those reported previously by Jampol et al. [1998: Am. J. Med. Genet. 75:449-452] led us to suggest that they have the same condition.

Oral squamous papillomas (SPs) are benign masses commonly growing in the tongue, gingiva, uvula, lips, and palate. A case of an asymptomatic pedunculated squamous papilloma at the center of the soft palate is presented. Both surgical management and histopathologic analysis were conducted. The aim of this report is to stress the importance of early diagnosis and management of common benign oral lesions to prevent their transformation into malignancy.

A boy and his mother with bilateral congenital blepharoptosis, downslanting palpebral fissures, hypertelorism, microcephaly, short nose with flattened nasal root, microstomia, prominent lateral palatine ridges, bifid (boy) hypoplastic (mother) uvula, generalized dental caries, short neck, peculiar voice and mild conductive deafness are reported. The boy had subvalvular aortic stenosis. The mother had pectus excavatum but not any signs or symptoms of cardiovascular defect.

Acute infectious uvulitis is a rare condition. A case caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae occurred in a 56-year-old woman who also had coexisting epiglottitis. One other case of uvulitis reported in the literature has also been associated with acute epiglottitis. Because of potentially lethal complications, epiglottitis should be suspected in any patient who presents with acute painful swelling of the uvula.

The case is presented of a girl with the banded karyotype 46,XX,del(13)(q22) and a phenotype of severe mental and growth deficiency, mongoloid slant of palpebral fissures, ptosis, hypertelorism, microcephaly, microstomia, micrognathia, nystagmus, gothic palate, uvula fissa, low-set malformed ears, short fingers, pedes excavati, dislocation of hips and diabetes insipidis. Both parents have a normal phenotype and karyotype.

In addition to hypertension and proteinuria, generalized edema is seen commonly in women with severe preeclampsia. A patient presented to us at term with the complaint of dysphonia. Upon examination she appeared to be clearly preeclamptic and had a grossly edemetous uvula, which we think occurred secondary to generalized edema. This case might be the first reported one of preeclampsia presenting as dysphonia and of uvular edema in association with preeclampsia.
