Associated factors to depression diagnosed during incarceration in Peruvian male prisoners: a sub-analysis of the national census of prison population.

PURPOSE: Depression has become a major health concern, particularly in developing countries. This disorder is highly prevalent among certain vulnerable populations, such as prisoners. In Peru, prisons are overcrowded, and the health of prisoners is neglected. Thus, this study aims to estimate the prevalence of depression diagnosed during incarceration in male inmates from all Peruvian prisons and assess its associated factors. DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH: A cross-sectional study was conducted based on the secondary data analysis of the National Census of Prison Population 2016 in Peru. This s

Practice of essential newborn care and associated factors among obstetric care providers in rural health centers of Hadiya zone, central Ethiopia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Essential newborn care (ENBC) practice is an ideal strategy to improve the health status of newborns and avert neonatal deaths. Usually, ENBC is given by health professionals attending labor, delivery, and postnatal care. However, evidence about the level of practice and contributing factors among health professionals working at rural health centers is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the practice of ENBC and associated factors among obstetric care providers in rural health centers of the Hadiya zone, Central Ethiopia. METHODS: A health facility-based cross-sectional

Screening in child health.

Screening programmes in child health have evolved on the basis of individual enthusiasm and professional consensus, rather than being based on objective evidence of benefit. Three reviews have been carried out in the UK over the past 10 years. The only programmes which show robust evidence of effectiveness are those for PKU and hypothyroidism. The value of screening for hearing loss and vision defects is widely accepted, but there are many unresolved issues. Programmes for detection of congenital dislocation of the hip, congenital heart disease and growth disturbances are of doubtful value. Ea

Towards person-centred maternal and newborn care in Ethiopia: a mixed method study of satisfaction and experiences of care.

BACKGROUND: Person-centred maternal care is associated with positive experiences in high-income countries. Little is known about the transferability of this concept to non-Western, low-income settings. We aimed to explore women's experiences of care and investigate satisfaction with antenatal care (ANC) in relation to person-centred care and unmet psychosocial needs in rural Ethiopia. METHODS: Design: facility-based, convergent mixed-method study. A cross-sectional survey included 2079 consecutive women attending ANC at eight health centres. Service satisfaction was measured using a 21-item v

U.K. standards of care for occupational contact dermatitis and occupational contact urticaria.

The diagnosis of occupational contact dermatitis (OCD) and occupational contact urticaria (OCU) is a process that involves fastidious clinical and occupational history taking, clinical examination, patch testing and skin-prick testing. A temporal relationship of work and/or the presence of a rash on the hands only raises suspicion of an occupational cause, and does not necessarily confirm an occupational causation. The identification of allergy by patch or prick tests is a major objective, as exclusion of an offending allergen from the environment can contribute to clinical recovery in the ind

Investigating health-related quality of life in rare diseases: a case study in utility value determination for patients with CLN2 disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2).

BACKGROUND: Utility studies enable preference-based quantification of a disease's impact on patients' health-related quality of life (HRQoL). It is often difficult to obtain utility values for rare, neurodegenerative conditions due to cognitive burden of direct elicitation methods, and the limited size of patient/caregiver populations. CLN2 disease (neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis type 2) is an ultra-rare, progressive condition, for which there are no published utility data fully capturing all disease stages. This case study demonstrates how utility values can be estimated for ultra-rare paedia

Big Data Analytics to Reduce Preventable Hospitalizations-Using Real-World Data to Predict Ambulatory Care-Sensitive Conditions.

The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model to identify individuals and populations with a high risk of being hospitalized due to an ambulatory care-sensitive condition who might benefit from preventative actions or tailored treatment options to avoid subsequent hospital admission. A rate of 4.8% of all individuals observed had an ambulatory care-sensitive hospitalization in 2019 and 6389.3 hospital cases per 100,000 individuals could be observed. Based on real-world claims data, the predictive performance was compared between a machine learning model (Random Forest) and a stat

"We built it grassroots… birth by birth": circumpolar maternal child health workshop proceedings.

Maternity care across the Circumpolar North continues to be shaped by colonial policies, centralized healthcare structures, and the ongoing evacuation of pregnant people from their communities for birth. While these challenges are well documented, less attention has been given to the strengths, innovations, and community-led approaches emerging across Arctic regions. Building on previous engagements of the Circumpolar Maternal and Child Health Working Group, a two-day workshop was convened in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada, in March 2026. The workshop brought together Elders, Indig

Clinical outcome indicators in chronic hepatitis B and C: A primer for value-based medicine in hepatology.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Chronic liver diseases (CLDs) are major health problems that require complex and costly treatments. Liver-specific clinical outcome indicators (COIs) able to assist both clinicians and administrators in improving the value of care are presently lacking. The Value-Based Medicine in Hepatology (VBMH) study aims to fill this gap, devising and testing a set of COIs for CLD, that could be easily collected during clinical practice. Here we report the COIs generated and recorded for patients with HBV or HCV infection at different stages of the disease. METHODS/RESULTS: In the firs

A Qualitative Analysis of Factors Contributing to Cervical Cancer Screening Implementation in Health Care Facilities in Uganda.

IntroductionCervical cancer prevalence and incidence are high in sub-Saharan Africa, especially in Uganda, where screening rates are low, despite government policy recommending screening for all women aged 25-49 every three years. Most prior research focuses on client-related barriers to screening, including women's fears about the screening procedure, lack of partner support, and community-level stigma. Fewer studies elaborate on inner context factors related to health care systems, facilities, and providers. The aim of this study was to use qualitative methods to explore inner context factor

The Application of Preventive Medicine in the Future Digital Health Era.

A number of seismic shifts are expected to reshape the future of medicine. The global population is rapidly aging, significantly impacting the global disease burden. Medicine is undergoing a paradigm shift, defining and diagnosing diseases at earlier stages and shifting the health care focus from treating diseases to preventing them. The application and purview of digital medicine are expected to broaden significantly. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has further accelerated the shift toward predictive, preventive, personalized, and participatory (P4) medicine, and has identified health care

Current perspectives on the psychological stress-immune axis in asthma: Pathophysiology, interventions, and significance for patient care.

Psychological stress and psychiatric comorbidities are highly prevalent in patients with asthma, with evidence supporting bidirectional links. Excessive psychological stress is associated with immune dysregulation, hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis dysfunction, and neuroimmune crosstalk that increases Type 2 inflammation associated with poorly controlled asthma. Anxiety and depression worsen asthma control and quality of life through complex and bidirectional mechanisms. Both cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) can help reduce distress and i

High-Volume Arthroplasty Centers Demonstrate Higher Composite Quality Scores and Enhanced Value: Perspective on Higher-Volume Hospitals Performing Arthroplasty from 2001 to 2011.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been a move toward value-based health care. Value is generally defined as outcome divided by cost; however, it is not clear exactly how to define and measure outcomes. In this study, we utilized the Nationwide Inpatient Sample (NIS) to determine how hospital volume and other factors affect quality for patients undergoing total hip and knee arthroplasty. METHODS: Using the NIS of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), we conducted a retrospective study of all total hip and total knee ar…

Patient and Caregiver Expectations for Patient Portal Communication With Providers: Perspectives From an Academic Geriatric Primary Care Practice.

BACKGROUND: Electronic patient portals play an increasingly important role in healthcare delivery, facilitating communication between patients and providers. Little is known about how and why older adults and their caregivers use the electronic patient portal and perceive its value. METHODS: We performed a mixed-methods survey-based study of patients and caregivers receiving care in a large academic geriatrics practice to characterize electronic patient portal use in this population. All patients receiving care at the practice with an active patient portal account received a single invitation

Burden of mental disorders in children in the general population and in health facilities: discrepancies in years lived with disability based on national prevalence estimates between populations receiving care or not.

Little is known about the discrepancies in the burden of child mental disorders based on differences in prevalence between populations with and without care. Identifying such discrepancies may help to elucidate the unmet needs related to child mental disorders. We compared the years lived with disability (YLD) between children with and without care for mental disorders using a representative national survey, Taiwan's National Epidemiological Study of Child Mental Disorders (TNESCMD), and a national health facility database, the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (TNHIRD). The c
