The objectives of this study were to characterize the time course of development of the renal hyperemia induced by chronic portal vein stenosis (PVS) in the rat, and to assess the possibility that vasoactive blood-borne gastrointestinal peptides mediate the renal hyperemia in established portal hypertension. The plasma concentrations of seven gut regulatory peptides were measured in 11 infants suffering from acute gastroenteritis. Atrophy of the exocrine pancreas was induced in rats by feeding a copper-deficient diet combined with penicillamine. The treatment resulted in significant decreases in the weights of pancreas and stomach but an increase in the weight of the small intestine compared with control animals receiving the same amount of food. Previously, administration of VIP has been shown to elicit no flow of saliva from the submandibular gland of the dog. However, in the present study we found VIP to cause release of protein in vitro from canine submandibular gland tissue. Furthermore, VIP-containing nerve fibres were demonstrated in large numbers in association with acini. Thus, VIP may be involved in the nervous regulation of salivary protein secretion in the dog.
