Neuropsychological deficits in adults with dyslexia.

Adults with severe dyslexia were compared with age-, sex-, IQ- and SES-matched controls on a neuropsychological and neuromotor test battery, and a contrast group who had recovered from dyslexia was also included. The severely dyslexic group was substantially impaired on tests of verbal fluency and learning, as well as on non-verbal temporal order judgements. These test scores were strong predictors of the degree of reading impairment, as was the rate of repetitive movement of the right hand and foot. The results suggest that adult dyslexia is not 'isolated', but is one expression of a widespre

Working memory following improvements in articulation rate in children with cerebral palsy.

It has been postulated that rehearsal rate is the primary determinant of working memory capacity for verbal material (Baddeley et al., 1975). A previous study of normal control children and children with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (SDCP) suggested that covert rather than overt rehearsal rate determines working memory capacity (White et al., 1994). In the current study, a subset of SDCP children who received a surgical treatment to relieve spasticity were retested on measures of articulation rate and memory span. A subset of control children from the original study were also retested. The

Domain-Specific Subjective Cognitive complaints and Cognitive Test Performance After Surgery in Older Adults: A Patient-Centered Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Subjective cognitive complaints are clinically important in the assessment of perioperative neurocognitive changes because current nomenclature incorporates cognitive concerns reported by patients or others. However, the relationship between patients' subjective cognitive complaints and contemporaneous changes in cognitive test performance during the immediate postoperative period remains poorly understood. OBJECTIVES: To identify if subjective cognitive complaints reported before hospital discharge were associated with cognitive changes measured with cognitive tests. DESIGN: Pro

Autonomic and behavioral evidence of "implicit" memory in amnesia.

A profoundly amnesic patient with a left retrosplenial-fornix lesion was tested on a recognition task that evaluated both verbal and electrodermal aspects of new learning. In addition, "implicit memory" tasks (mirror reading and perceptual identification) were given. The patient displayed strong evidence of learning on all tasks although the results of this learning were not represented in explicit recall or recognition. These findings suggest that autonomic as well as behavioral evidence can index spared memory functions in amnesia. The specific meaning of electrodermal recognition and its po

Examining the cognitive demands of analogy instructions compared to explicit instructions.

PURPOSE: In many learning domains, instructions are presented explicitly despite high cognitive demands associated with their processing. This study examined cognitive demands imposed on working memory by different types of instruction to speak with maximum pitch variation: visual analogy, verbal analogy and explicit verbal instruction. METHOD: Forty participants were asked to memorise a set of 16 visual and verbal stimuli while reading aloud a Cantonese paragraph with maximum pitch variation. Instructions about how to achieve maximum pitch variation were presented via visual analogy, verbal

Frontal lobe-related cognitive functions in patients with sleep apnea syndrome before and after treatment.

Impairments of cognitive executive functions has been previously suspected to occur in Sleep Apnea Syndrome (SAS), as suggested by some neuropsychological studies. However such functions have not been assessed directly. In the present study, ten patients with SAS were evaluated with various focused frontal lobe-related tests in comparison with ten matched normal controls. Such tasks explored attention, short term memory spans, learning abilities, planning and programming capacities, categorizing activities and verbal fluency. Patients were found with a significant decreased ability to initiate

Co-verbal gestures among speakers with aphasia: Influence of aphasia severity, linguistic and semantic skills, and hemiplegia on gesture employment in oral discourse.

UNLABELLED: The use of co-verbal gestures is common in human communication and has been reported to assist word retrieval and to facilitate verbal interactions. This study systematically investigated the impact of aphasia severity, integrity of semantic processing, and hemiplegia on the use of co-verbal gestures, with reference to gesture forms and functions, by 131 normal speakers, 48 individuals with aphasia and their controls. All participants were native Cantonese speakers. It was found that the severity of aphasia and verbal-semantic impairment was associated with significantly more co-ve

[Results of the revision of the 1983 Hamburg-Wechsler Intelligence Test for Children in students with severe reading disorders].

In connection with the current discussion about the use of the HAWIK-R in differential diagnosis, 20 children with severe reading retardation were tested with both the HAWIK and the HAWIK-R and the results compared, and 48 children with this disorder were tested with the HAWIK-R and divided into three groups by the amount of difference between verbal and performance scores. The results on the subtests of the HAWIK-R were grouped by the categories recommended by Titze and Tewes. In the first part of the study, the 20 reading retarded children scored lower on the HAWIK-R than on the HAWIK on the

The involvement of long-term serial-order memory in reading development: A longitudinal study.

Recent findings suggest that Hebb repetition learning-a paradigmatic example of long-term serial-order learning-is impaired in adults with dyslexia. The current study further investigated the link between serial-order learning and reading using a longitudinal developmental design. With this aim, verbal and visual Hebb repetition learning performance and reading skills were assessed in 96 Dutch-speaking children who we followed from first through second grade of primary school. We observed a positive association between order learning capacities and reading ability as well as weaker Hebb learni

Slower implicit categorical learning in adult poor readers.

We investigated the relationship between reading and explicit and implicit categorical learning by comparing university students with poor reading to students with normal reading abilities on two categorical learning tasks. One categorical learning task involved sorting simple geometric shapes into two groups according to a unidimensional rule. The sorting rule was easily stated by the participants, consistent with explicit learning, and all participants attained criterion levels of performance. The second task involved the integration of features on different dimensions with a more complex ru

Right hemisphere, white-matter learning disabilities associated with depression in an adolescent and young adult psychiatric population.

Four hundred and eighty-four adolescents and young adults at an inpatient psychiatric facility were diagnosed as nonverbal learning disabled, verbal learning disabled, general learning disabled, or normal psychiatric controls. The nonverbal learning disabled group had the highest incidence of depression and was clearly different from the reading disabled group (66.3% vs. 33.3%). Nondisabled subjects were significantly more likely than the other subjects to be diagnosed with adjustment problems. Depressed subjects were significantly younger and more likely to be female. This study supports the …

Effect of Retrieval Practice on Short-Term and Long-Term Retention in HIV+ Individuals.

OBJECTIVES: Episodic memory deficits are both common and impactful among persons infected with HIV; however, we know little about how to improve such deficits in the laboratory or in real life. Retrieval practice, by which retrieval of newly learned material improves subsequent recall more than simple restudy, is a robust memory boosting strategy that is effective in both healthy and clinical populations. In this study, we investigated the benefits of retrieval practice in 52 people living with HIV and 21 seronegatives. METHODS: In a within-subjects design, all participants studied 48 verbal
