Cephalometric study of the upper airways and dentoalveolar height in open bite patients.

UNLABELLED: Open bite is related to various etiological factors and, in many cases, is difficult to diagnose. The present study is aimed at … s of the hyoid bone displacement to a more anterior and lower position, and increased values of the vertical dimensions of the airways. An increase in posterior facial height was also observed allowing anterior rotation of the mandible. CONCLUSION: The results suggest that the airway's dimensions reflect a tendency to open bite. The variable vertical airway length …

Surgical Chin Reduction: Achieving a Balanced Result.

The chin plays a critical role in establishing facial balance and proportions. Abnormalities of chin projection, height, width, and symmetry can affect perioral aesthetics, gender alignment, and aging.Patients who present for aesthetic perioral enhancement should have a complete evaluation of the perioral bony anatomy. Chin excess may occur in the horizontal, vertical, and transverse dimensions. Surgical chin contouring may require both deprojection and shortening. The technique for both horizontal and vertical chin reduction will be reviewed in addition to complications. The chin is a critical

Kenny-Caffey Syndrome: oral findings and 4-year follow-up of overlay denture therapy.

Kenny-Caffey Syndrome (KCS) is an extremely rare osteosclerotic bone dysplasia associated with hypocalcemia and ocular abnormalities. Although the condition is well reported in the medical literature, dental manifestations have not been discussed in great detail. The purpose of this report is to present specific oral features and prosthetic management in a KCS patient. Overlay dentures were utilized in the management of low vertical dimension of occlusion, congenital absence of several permanent teeth, and problems associated with function and esthetics. Results of the 4-year follow-up overlay…

Transverse development of the jaws: norms for the posteroanterior cephalometric analysis.

Norms available for the posteroanterior (PA) cephalometric analysis yield different information. The material used to generate these standards is not clearly defined. The purpose of this study was to use data from the Bolton-Brush Growth Study to generate new norms for the PA analysis. The Bolton material is recognized as a controlled longitudinal record of growing children. The assumption that growth in the transverse dimension is the first to be completed is challenged by finding that increments in maxillary and mandibular width vary, like sagittal and vertical growth, according to gender an

Sagittal and Vertical Changes After Aligner Versus Acrylic Splint Expansion in Mixed Dentition: A Prospective Trial.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The efficacy of acrylic splint expander (Splint) and Invisalign First aligners (First) in increasing transverse width in mixed dentition have been well documented, but little is known about their sagittal and vertical effects. Since sagittal and vertical changes are particularly critical in growing patients, the objective of this study was to assess and compare the sagittal and vertical treatment effects of First and Splint in mixed dentition with transverse maxillary deficiency. METHODS: Sixty subjects were included after propensity score matching (PSM) from initial 16

Virtual patient-based fully digital workflow for confirming jaw relationship: A dental technique.

For patients with terminal dentition and occlusal interference resulting from long-term partial edentulism, determining a reliable jaw relationship before extraction is challenging. The present technique addresses this by introducing a digital workflow for establishing and transferring the jaw relationship. A 3-dimensionally printed custom gothic arch tracer was first used to register the optimal centric relation. Combined with facial scans, the mandible was then virtually rotated to establish the vertical dimension. On this basis, preoperative denture tooth arrangement and implant planning we…
