Polysplenia syndrome (PS) is rarely encountered in elderly. It is characterized by multiple spleens associated with various cardiac and gastrointestinal abnormalities including partial or complete agenesis of dorsal pancreas. Situs inversus totalis (SIT) is a rare congenital anomaly with mirror image of viscera combined with dextrocardia. Occurrence of SIT and PS in the same patient is exceedingly rare. We present the first case of adult PS with SIT accompanied with annular pancreas.

Hydatid disease is fairly common and is prevalent worldwide. The principal organs involved are the liver and lungs. Kidney involvement also occurs but usually with involvement of other viscera. Isolated hydatid cyst of the kidney is extremely uncommon. In the kidney, the hydatid cyst usually occurs in the renal parenchyma. We present a rare occurrence of a hydatid cyst of the renal pelvis in a 4-year-old child and discuss measures to decrease surgical morbidity.

A bitch was presented for a vaginal prolapse of five years' duration. The prolapse was confirmed by physical examination and evaluated by contrast radiography. Herniation of the uterine body, urinary bladder, and distal aspect of the colon was identified within the prolapse. The prolapse was reduced surgically, and an ovariohysterectomy, cystopexy, and colopexy were performed. Compared to other vaginal disorders, vaginal prolapse is an uncommon condition in the bitch. The secondary involvement of abdominal viscera appears to be exceptionally rare.

Situs inversus viscerum (transposition of the viscera) is a rare condition with a genetic predisposition that is autosomal recessive. We present a patient with situs inversus, cholelithiasis, and choledocholithiasis who was successfully treated via laparoscopic cholecystectomy and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography with sphincterotomy. This paper further expands the application of these techniques and shows that they can be safely and effectively applied in the setting of situs inversus, although attention must be paid to the details of left-right reversal.

Malformations of the brain, spinal cord, liver, and other viscera; body edema; and localized hemorrhages were found in fetal hamsters from mothers injected subcutaneously with a single dose of mescaline, lysergic acid diethylamide, or 2-bromo-D lysergic acid diethylamide on the 8th day of pregnancy. In addition, all three drugs produced an increase in the percentages of small fetuses per litter, of resorptions, and of fetal mortality.

Intra-peritoneal rupture or perforation into adjacent abdominal viscera is a rare complication of benign cystic teratoma (dermoid cyst) of the ovary. We report a 48-year-old woman in whom an ovarian dermoid cyst perforated into a loop of the small bowel. The patient had co-existing typhoid fever, which probably predisposed to this complication. She recovered on antibiotic therapy and after surgical excision.

From analysis of 304 clinical cases with trauma of the spine and spinal cord combined with various extravertebral injuries the authors discuss the specific features of the clinical course and diagnosis of the condition and the surgical tactics in the management of this severe contingent of patients. They substantiate the use of emergency instrumental methods for recognizing injuries to the viscera and brain as well as the tendency to conduct early operations for fractures of the spine and limbs whenever indicated.

The authors report the stimulatory effects provoked by caerulein on caecum and colon motilities in sheep which are quite opposite to those exerted by the same peptide on the forestomach and abomasal sections. By means of various pharmacological tools these effects are suggested to be attributable to a direct effect of caerulein on the smooth muscle of these viscera through the involvement of receptors different from those ones on which CCK may be antagonizable by proglumide or cGMP pretreatments.
