Endoscopic vs. microscopic stapes surgery: An anatomical feasibility study.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate the feasibility of the endoscopic approach vs. microscopic approach during stapes surgery, focusing on the visualization of the important anatomical structures of the middle ear, the volume of the resected scutum and chorda tympani (CT) injury. METHODS: Fresh frozen human cadaveric heads underwent two stapes surgeries using an operating microscope on one ear and an endoscope on the other ear. The surgeon documented the visualization of critical landmarks, as well as exposure and injury of the CT. The volume of resected scutum was evaluated using cone beam computed t

[Mirror therapy for the treatment of phantom limb pain after bilateral thigh amputation. A case report].

This case study is the first to report successful treatment of bilateral phantom limb pain (PLP) in a patient with bilateral thigh amputation and inefficacious medical treatment using a protocol of graded interventions including mirror therapy (MT). MT is a common treatment for PLP but requires the induction of a visual illusion of an intact limb in the mirror, usually achieved by mirroring the healthy extremity. Here, we illustrate how application of a unilateral prosthesis sufficed to induce the necessary illusion. After sequential imagery, then lateralization training, which alleviated pain

Geometry-based optimization of radio-frequency coils for powering neuroprosthetic implants.

Biomedical implants powered by inductive links have several advantages over batteries or percutaneous power linkages. The inductive link pow … etric constraints. This new approach is verified using a design example targeted for an intraocular visual prosthesis. In this example, we demonstrate an experimental power transfer efficiency of 52% by co-optimization of the primary and secondary coils.

Neurotoxicity of cobalt.

Cobalt exerts well-known and documented toxic effects on the thyroid, heart and the haematopoietic system, in addition to the occupational lung disease, allergic manifestations and a probably carcinogenic action. Cobalt neurotoxicity is reported in isolated cases, and it has never been systematically treated. Bilateral optic atrophy and retinopathy, bilateral nerve deafness and sensory-motor polyneuropathy have been described long ago as a result of chronic occupational exposure to cobal powder or during long-term treatment of anaemia with cobalt chloride. Recently, some patients with high lev

Evaluation of accuracy of photogrammetry with 3D scanning and conventional impression method for craniomaxillofacial defects using a software analysis.

BACKGROUND: Facial mutilation and deformities can be caused by cancer, tumours, injuries, infections, and inherited or acquired deformities and has the potential to degrade one's quality of life by interfering with fundamental tasks like communication, breathing, feeding, and aesthetics. Depending on the type of defect, producing maxillofacial prostheses for the rehabilitation of patients with various defects can be challenging and complex. The prosthesis is used to replace missing or damaged parts of the cranium and face, like the nose, auricle, orbit, and surrounding tissues, as well as miss

Assessment of visual function in blind mice and monkeys with subretinally implanted nanowire arrays as artificial photoreceptors.

Retinal prostheses could restore image-forming vision in conditions of photoreceptor degeneration. However, contrast sensitivity and visual acuity are often insufficient. Here we report the performance, in mice and monkeys with induced photoreceptor degeneration, of subretinally implanted gold-nanoparticle-coated titania nanowire arrays providing a spatial resolution of 77.5 μm and a temporal resolution of 3.92 Hz in ex vivo retinas (as determined by patch-clamp recording of retinal ganglion cells). In blind mice, the arrays allowed for the detection of drifting gratings and flashing objects a

Assessing the Quality of Operative Notes in the Orthopedic Surgery Department at Gezira Traumatology Center, Sudan, in Accordance With the Royal College of Surgeons Guidelines.

BACKGROUND: High-quality operative notes are crucial for patient safety, continuity of care, and medico-legal protection. Despite established Royal College of Surgeons (RCS) guidelines, audits globally reveal persistent deficiencies in surgical documentation. This study assessed the quality of operative notes in the Orthopedic Surgery Department at Gezira Traumatology Center, Wad Madani Teaching Hospital, Sudan, and evaluated the impact of targeted interventions. METHODS: A clinical audit was conducted in two cycles (in July 2023 and then three months post-intervention). In the first cycle, 2

A compact solution for vibrotactile proprioceptive feedback of wrist rotation and hand aperture.

BACKGROUND: Closing the control loop between users and their prostheses by providing artificial sensory feedback is a fundamental step toward the full restoration of lost sensory-motor functions. METHODS: We propose a novel approach to provide artificial proprioceptive feedback about two degrees of freedom using a single array of 8 vibration motors (compact solution). The performance afforded by the novel method during an online closed-loop control task was compared to that achieved using the conventional approach, in which the same information was conveyed using two arrays of 8 and 4 vibromo

The direct anterior approach without traction table: How does it compare with the posterior approach? - A prospective non-randomised trial.

PURPOSE: The direct anterior approach (DAA) for total hip replacement (THR) is relatively new. It has been proved superior to other techniques concerning early functional outcomes, stability, and earlier recovery. But DAA-THR has a steeper surgical learning curve and, in its original description, needs special operating room equipment. This study aims to present clinical, functional, and radiological outcomes of DAA compared to the posterior approach (PA), performed using a routine operating table and instrumentation sets. METHODS: Eighty patients undergoing THR were non-randomly allocated pr
