Experimental efforts for understanding the mechanisms of electroacupuncture (EA) for opiate addiction are partially hampered by restraint stress. In unrestrained animals, it is difficult to perform EA stimulation at acupuncture points frequently selected on the four limbs. The present study was performed to evaluate the effect of EA at the acupuncture point Shen-Shu (BL.23) on morphine withdrawal signs and c-Fos expression of the amygdala in freely moving rats or restrained rats. We applied immunohistochemistry to detect c-Fos-positive nuclei. Corticosterone levels and behavioral responses wer

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: A new treatment for acute unilateral vocal-fold paralysis (UVFP) was proposed in which a drug is injected into the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle (PCA) shortly after nerve injury, before the degree of natural recovery is known, to prevent antagonistic synkinetic reinnervation. This concept was tested in a series of canine experiments using vincristine as the blocking agent.
STUDY DESIGN: Animal experiments.
METHODS: Laryngeal adductor function was measured at baseline and at 6 months following experimental recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injuries, including complete t

Schizophrenia is a neurodevelopmental disorder whose etiopathogenesis includes changes in cellular as well as extracellular structures. Perineuronal nets (PNNs) associated with parvalbumin-positive interneurons (PVs) in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) are dysregulated in schizophrenia. However, the postnatal development of these structures along with their associated neurons in the PFC is unexplored, as is their effects on behavior and neural activity. Therefore, in this study, we employed a DISC1 (Disruption in Schizophrenia) mutation mouse model of schizophrenia to assess these developmental cha

The ingestion of the pollen beetle Astylus atromaculatus causes gastroenteric disease in ruminants and possibly in other species. No toxic principle has been identified in these insects. Two studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of oral administration of A. atromaculatus in guinea pigs using fresh insects (n = 3) and insects dried for different periods (2, 30, 60, 120, or 240 days) (n = 5). All animals became sick and died spontaneously between 10 and 96 hours after inoculation. Clinical signs included depression; reluctance to move, eat, and drink; kyphosis; and increased frequency o

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Recent papers on incidence of unilateral paresis in general and for specific causes; techniques to assist clinical diagnosis; computer and animal modeling leading to new assessment tools; and studies on the effectiveness of clinical management.
RECENT FINDINGS: There is much interest in being able to assess unilateral paresis in patients both pre and post-thyroidectomy. Because the gold standard for defining the presence of paresis is by laryngeal electromyography, which is not routinely available, much interest has been placed in finding other measures that correlate with

Acquired laryngotracheal stenosis is a well-documented complication of endotracheal intubation. Severe acquired laryngotracheal stenosis in children responds to surgical reconstruction, including the use of grafts and stents. The most commonly described graft material is autogenous cartilage, placed in the anterior laryngotracheal complex. The role of autogenous cartilaginous grafts sewn between the divided lamina of the posterior cricoid cartilage is less well established. Several authors report good clinical results using autogenous cartilaginous grafts to the posterior larynx; the single re

INTRODUCTION: Rabies is a dreadful zoonotic viral disease that affects animals and humans with a fatality rate of 100%. This report aims to create awareness among the veterinarians and general public about the paralytic form of rabies in order to understand the antemortem clinical diagnosis implications in limited resource settings, so as to follow the post-exposure prophylaxis at the golden hour period of rabies transmission.
CASE PRESENTATION: A one-year-old female dog was presented to the Ambulatory Clinic Unit, Veterinary Clinical Complex, Veterinary College and Research Institute, Theni,

The objective of this study was to investigate relationships between animal personality (i.e., consistency in behavioral responses, also called temperament) and milk production in dairy cows. There has recently been a growing research interest in animal personality, which in production animals can have an important impact on welfare and production potential. Despite this, the relationship between personality and milk production in dairy cows remains unclear. Here we investigate links between behavioral responses during milking and in personality tests (responses to novel object and social isol

OBJECTIVE:: Laryngeal paralysis of central or peripheral origin can potentially be treated using functional electrical stimulation (FES) of laryngeal muscles. Experiments in canines (dogs) were performed using implant prototypes capable of closed-loop FES to refine engineering designs and specifications, test surgical approaches for implantation, and better understand the in vivo effects of laryngeal muscle stimulation on short- and long-term glottic function.
STUDY DESIGN:: Prospective, laboratory.
METHODS:: We designed and tested a series of microprocessor-based implantable devices that ca

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The pathophysiology of bilateral vocal fold immobility includes two broad categories: mechanical fixation and neurogenic paralysis. A mobile arytenoid can be surgically abducted, and this procedure has been reported as a treatment for patients with bilateral neurogenic laryngeal paralysis. This article reviews the theoretical basis and clinical outcomes of this procedure.
RECENT FINDINGS: Two concepts form the theoretical basis for arytenoid abduction. First, in most cases of neurogenic paralysis, laryngeal muscles are not denervated; there is considerable residual or regen

The sub-branches of main branch of ansa cervicalis were cut and implanted into the thyroarytenoid and lateral cricoarytenoid muscles on the left side in 7 dogs after the recurrent and superior laryngeal nerves were sectioned on the same side. After six months, laryngoscopy showed that adduction of the vocal cord recovered in five post-operative cases. Adduction was caused by the reinnervated adductor muscles, as demonstrated by laryngeal electromyography, histologic studies, tension of contraction and electron microscopy for the neuro-muscular junctions. The present results demonstrated that t

In the search for new materials to fill the unilaterally paralysed vocal cord, auto- and allogeneic chondrocytes were isolated from costal cartilage, and were injected into the canine vocal cord. The produced cartilage caused a thickening and shift of the treated cord towards the median line of the glottis. Such changes occurred in all autogeneic transplants, and persisted for the period of observation (up to 6 weeks). In allogeneic transplants, the effect was present after 6 and 12 weeks, but disappeared after 18 weeks. Cartilage produced by the autogeneic chondrocytes persisted at the site o

Acoustic communication signals often contain a complex temporal structure, yet how this temporal structure contributes to signal recognition is poorly understood, particularly in eavesdropping receivers. The parasitoid fly Ormia ochracea localises host crickets by eavesdropping on their calling songs. In Florida, preferred host songs consist of sound pulses repeated at ∼50 pulses s-1, and flies exhibit matching preferences. However, it is unclear whether this preference reflects sensitivity to individual temporal parameters or to derived temporal relationships that emerge from their combinatio

Intonation in speech is the control of vocal pitch to layer expressive meaning to communication, like increasing pitch to indicate a question. Also, stereotyped patterns of pitch are used to create distinct sounds with different denotations, like in tonal languages and, perhaps, the 10 sounds in the murine lexicon. A basic tone is created by exhalation through a constricted laryngeal voice box, and it is thought that more complex utterances are produced solely by dynamic changes in laryngeal tension. But perhaps, the shifting pitch also results from altering the swiftness of exhalation. Consis

Formants, or resonance frequencies of the upper vocal tract, are an essential part of acoustic communication. Articulatory gestures-such as jaw, tongue, lip, and soft palate movements-shape formant structure in human vocalizations, but little is known about how nonhuman mammals use those gestures to modify formant frequencies. Here, we report a case study with an adult male harbor seal trained to produce an arbitrary vocalization composed of multiple repetitions of the sound wa. We analyzed jaw movements frame-by-frame and matched them to the tracked formant modulation in the corresponding voc

Variation in formant frequencies has been shown to affect social interactions and sexual competition in a range of avian species. Yet, the anatomical bases of this variation are poorly understood. Here, we investigated the morphological correlates of formants production in the vocal apparatus of African penguins. We modelled the geometry of the supra-syringeal vocal tract of 20 specimens to generate a population of virtual vocal tracts with varying dimensions. We then estimated the acoustic response of these virtual vocal tracts and extracted the centre frequency of the first four predicted fo

Birds contribute prominently to the terrestrial soundscapes on Earth. The sounds can arise from different sources, such as drumming by woodpeckers, bill clapping by storks or feather vibrations in the courtship flights of snipes and hummingbirds. However, most avian sounds are generated in the avian vocal organ, the syrinx. Vocal behavior is used in many different contexts and features prominently in mate choice and reproduction. It is therefore thought to have played an important role in the remarkable diversification of birds.
