Outcome of laryngeal manual therapy in four Dutch adults with persistent moderate-to-severe vocal hyperfunction: a pilot study.

A relatively new management strategy for the treatment of voice disorders is the use of laryngeal manual therapy. The main purpose of the present pilot study is to document the outcome of vocal quality after a well-defined laryngeal manual therapy (LMT) program. Four Dutch professional voice users with a persistent moderate or severe muscle tension dysphonia were studied pretreatment (1 week before LMT) and posttreatment (1 week) after completion of manual therapy (25 sessions). These subjects had received several months of traditional voice therapy, without any success. To measure and compare

Objective Measures of Two Musical Interpretations of an Excerpt From Berlioz's "La mort d'Ophélie".

OBJECTIVE/HYPOTHESIS: This study aimed to determine objective production differences relative to two emotional interpretations in performing an excerpt from a classical art song. The null hypothesis was proposed. METHODS: The first author recorded an excerpt from an art song. The excerpt was sung with two contrasting musical interpretations: an "empathetic legato" approach, and a "sarcastic" approach characterized by emphatic attacks. Microphone, airflow, and electroglottography signals were digitized. The vowels were analyzed in terms of intensity, long term average spectra, fundamental freq

[A multiparameter method of computer-assisted objective vocal evaluation].

The aim of this study is to validate an aid for the evaluation of dysphonia with objective measurements. We recorded exhaled airflow, fundamental frequency and sound level pressure, for a sustained vowel "a", with 51 dysphonic subjects and 15 normal subjects. The following measurements are made on these three parameters: mean value, standard deviation and coefficient of variation. The exhaled airflow volume was also computed for a duration of 2 seconds. A principal components analysis of the measurements indicated that it is possible to recognise the classes of vocal evaluation and vocal patho

Treatment options in spasmodic dysphonia.

Options in the treatment of spasmodic dysphonia include surgical interruption of the recurrent laryngeal nerve, anterior laryngoplasty, voice therapy, and Botulinum toxin injection. Although none of these treatments is ideal, Botulinum toxin injection appears to have the greatest potential to benefit the greatest number of patients.
