PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To assess stakeholder perceptions of the quality of life associated with age-related macular degeneration (AMD).
RECENT FINDINGS: Ophthalmologists underestimate patient quality of life associated with AMD by 96-750%, more so at the better end of the visual spectrum. Other physicians and the general population have essentially no appreciation for the great quality-of-life loss associated with severe AMD. They equate it with the quality of life associated with entities such as carpal tunnel syndrome and ureteral calculi.

The purpose of this study was to describe the factor structure of the Sleep-Wake Activity Inventory (SWAI) in a Mexican population. In a sample of 722 Mexican college students, we replicated five of the six factors originally described in the SWAI. Retained factors included: excessive daytime sleepiness (similarity coefficient of 0.735), psychic distress (0.609), social desirability (0.638), individual's ability to relax (0.864), and nocturnal sleep (0.660). These results confirm the factor structure and extend the possible utility of the SWAI in a siesta culture.

Temporalis muscle activity in tension-type headache subjects (n = 36) and in matched nonheadache controls (n = 36) was evaluated in this study. Epileptic activity was recorded electroencephalographically in at least one sibling in 22 (51.16%) of 43 patients with rolandic epilepsy and/or centrotemporal spikes. Continuous 48-hour polygraphic recordings of sleep/waking patterns were performed on 14 patients with narcolepsy-cataplexy before and after 7-10 days of treatment of their nocturnal sleep with gamma-hydroxybutyrate (GBH).
