Otitis in a weaned pig: a new pathological role for Actinobacillus (Haemophilus) pleuropneumoniae.

A weaned pig exhibiting clinical signs characteristic of a vestibular syndrome (abnormal head tilt and abnormal gait including a tendency to circle) was examined as a representative example of a condition which, in a 12-month period, affected approximately 400 other pigs on the farm of origin. The condition caused significant morbidity and financial loss but the directly attributable mortality was negligible. Post mortem examination revealed a severe suppurative, left-sided otitis media and interna. Mixed growths of bacteria, including Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae, were isolated from the pu

[Acidification of the stomach contents of weaned piglets--effect of feed quantity and composition].

The pH in the stomach chyme (5-8 hours past offering the diet) of reared piglets was strongly correlated to the ingested feed quantity, a complete acidification of the stomach contents occurred in restrictively fed piglets (15 g diet/kg BW) only. Feeding ad libitum resulted in comparable low pH values in the fundus and pylorus region only, whereas in the cardiac region high pH values (5-6.5) were observed. Formic acid as feed additive (5 ml/kg diet) did not influence the pH in stomach contents significantly, on the other hand the ingestion of a diet with high CaCO3 content (59 g Ca/kg DM) prev

Assessment of the Rapid Shallow Breathing Index, Integrative Weaning Index, and Dead Space to Tidal Volume Ratio by Respiratory Failure Type in Successfully Weaned Emergency Department Patients.

Background/Objectives: Mechanical ventilation is essential in the management of acute respiratory failure (RF); however, prolonged use increases the risk of complications. Accurate predictors are therefore needed to guide timely weaning. The Rapid Shallow Breathing Index (RSBI), the dead space to tidal volume ratio (VD/VT), and the Integrative Weaning Index (IWI) are among the key indices used to assess weaning readiness. This study aimed to examine whether these indices differ between patients with Type 1 (hypoxemic) and Type 2 (hypercapnic) respiratory failure who were successfully extubated…

Systemic toxoplasmosis in weaned pigs in Pennsylvania, USA, with a brief review of the literature.

Toxoplasma gondii is an important apicomplexan parasite in veterinary medicine, with swine prevalence varying due to age, geographic distribution, and production program. Samples from a 6-wk-old pig from a small backyard farm with multisystemic disease concerns were submitted to the Iowa State University-Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. Gross findings included severe necrotizing enteritis with pseudomembrane formation and edematous, non-collapsing lungs. Histologic findings were severe necrotizing enterocolitis and random multifocal pulmonary and hepatic necrosis with numerous intralesional p

Immune-Modulatory Mechanism of Compound Yeast Culture in the Liver of Weaned Lambs.

Compound yeast culture (CYC) is known to enhance animal health, but its effects on hepatic immune function are unclear. This study systematically examined CYC's regulatory effects on the liver of weaned lambs using transcriptomics and integrative bioinformatics. Ten lambs were randomly assigned to a control diet or a basal diet supplemented with 30 g/d per head of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Kluyveromyces marxianus co-culture (CYC group) for 42 days. Histological analysis showed that CYC improved hepatocyte arrangement and sinusoidal integrity, suggesting enhanced hepatic tissue stability. Cy

Effects of Microencapsulated Essential Oils on Growth and Intestinal Health in Weaned Piglets.

The study investigated the effects of microencapsulated essential oils (MEO) on the growth performance, diarrhea, and intestinal microenvironment of weaned piglets. The 120 thirty-day-old weaned piglets (Duroc × Landrace × Yorkshire, 8.15 ± 0.07 kg) were randomly divided into four groups and were fed with a basal diet (CON) or CON diet containing 300 (L-MEO), 500 (M-MEO), and 700 (H-MEO) mg/kg MEO, respectively, and data related to performance were measured. The results revealed that MEO supplementation increased the ADG and ADFI in weaned piglets (p < 0.05) compared with CON, and reduced diar

A Retrospective Study on Weaning Glucocorticoids and Recovery of the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal Axis.

CONTEXT: Glucocorticoids suppress the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, resulting in tertiary adrenal insufficiency (AI). When weaning patients off glucocorticoids there is no consensus on whether to maintain patients on prednisolone or convert to hydrocortisone. OBJECTIVE: To investigate HPA axis recovery in patients on long-term prednisolone and assess outcome after hydrocortisone conversion. METHODS: This was a retrospective cohort study at an outpatient endocrine steroid clinic. Patients were on long-term prednisolone and referred for HPA axis testing between 2015 and 2022. The …

Pendelluft as a predictor of weaning in critically ill patients: An observational cohort study.

Objective: Weaning failure is associated with adverse clinical outcomes. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of pendelluft during the spontaneous breathing trials (SBT) as a predictor of weaning outcome of patients with mechanical ventilation. Methods: An observational cohort study included 60 critically ill patients who were eligible for extubation. Pendelluft and electrical activity of the diaphragm (Edi) were monitored at baseline and every 10 minutes for the first 30 min of SBT denoted as T0, T1, T2, and T3. The pendelluft was measured using electrical impedance tomography (EIT), and…

Serotonin receptors and their association with the immune system in the gastrointestinal tract of weaning piglets.

BACKGROUND: Immune cell activation and perpetuation of inflammation have been attributed to the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine; 5-HT). Our hypothesis was that the 5-HT system plays a role in GI health and immunity in post-weaning piglets. A disruption of the 5-HT system post-weaning with transcriptional upregulation of 5-HT receptors may be linked to increased cytokine mRNA abundance and immune system activation. METHODS: The objective of this exploratory study was to assess the relationship between 5-HT receptor expression and immune system biomarkers in piglets at 1 (n = 9)…

Effects of different dietary protein levels on intestinal aquaporins in weaned piglets.

This study was conducted to investigate the relationship between changes in intestinal aquaporins (AQPs) in piglets fed diets with different protein levels and nutritional diarrhoea in piglets. Briefly, 96 weaned piglets were randomly divided into four groups fed diets with crude protein (CP) levels of 18%, 20%, 22% and 24%. The small intestines and colons of the weaned piglets were collected, and several experiments were conducted. In the small intestine, AQP4 protein expression was higher in weaned piglets fed the higher-CP diets (22% and 24% CP) than in those fed the 20% CP diet except at 7

Glycine regulates mucosal immunity and the intestinal microbial composition in weaned piglets.

Glycine is an amino acid with a diverse array of health benefits regarding metabolism, immunity, and development. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that glycine supplementation alters the intestinal microbial composition and improves the intestinal mucosal immunity of weaned piglets. One hundred and twenty-eight weaned piglets divided into 4 groups were fed with a corn- and soybean meal-based diet supplemented with 0 (control), 0.5, 1, or 2% glycine for 7 days. The intestinal microbiota and tissue samples from the control and the 2% glycine-supplemented piglets were collected fo

Assessment of exposure to influenza A viruses in pigs between weaning and market age.

Influenza A viruses (IAVs) are common causes of respiratory infection in pigs. The objective of this study was to characterize the circulation of IAVs between weaning and market age on the basis of development of antibody response and molecular epidemiology of detected viruses. Two batches of weaned pigs were followed in the nursery and finisher barns with a sample of 81 and 75 pigs. Nasal swabs and blood samples were collected from individual pigs for virological and serological analyses. A H3N2 subtype virus, of cluster IV, was detected in Study 1, with a maximum of 97.9% identity to HA gene…

Weaning Age and Its Effect on the Development of the Swine Gut Microbiome and Resistome.

Piglets are often weaned between 19 and 22 days of age in North America, although in some swine operations this may occur at 14 days or less. Piglets are abruptly separated from their sow at weaning and are quickly transitioned from sow's milk to a plant-based diet. The effect of weaning age on the long-term development of the pig gut microbiome is largely unknown. Here, pigs were weaned at either 14, 21, or 28 days of age, and fecal samples were collected 20 times from day 4 (neonatal) through marketing at day 140. The fecal microbiome was characterized using 16S rRNA gene and shotgun metagen…

Behavioral and physiological responses to early weaning in ewes and their single or twin lambs.

As during the early postpartum, ewes and their twin lambs have a weaker bond than ewes that rear single lambs; it might be expected that early artificial weaning would trigger less intense behavioral and physiological responses in mothers and their twin lambs than in mothers and their single lambs. The aim of this study was to compare the behavioral and physiological responses of ewes and their twin or single lambs to early weaning. The study was performed with 19 Saint Croix ewes: 10 bearing single lambs and nine bearing twins (data from only one sibling from each pair of twins was collected)…

Breast cancer diagnosed in the post-weaning period is indicative for a poor outcome.

BACKGROUND: In young women, a breast cancer diagnosis after childbirth increases the risk for metastasis and death. Studies in rodents suggest that post-weaning mammary gland involution contributes to the poor prognosis of postpartum breast cancers. However, this association has not been investigated in humans, mainly because of missing information on the patient's lactation status at diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Clinicopathological data of 1180 young women with primary invasive breast cancer, diagnosed within 2 years postpartum (PP-BC), during pregnancy (Pr-BC), or nulliparous (NP-BC), w…

Evaluation of lipid matrix microencapsulation for intestinal delivery of thymol in weaned pigs.

Essential oils (EO) are defined as plant-derived natural bioactive compounds, which can have positive effects on animal growth and health due to their antimicrobial and antioxidative properties. However, EO are volatile, can evaporate quickly, and be rapidly absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Also, due to their labile nature, the stability of EO during feed processing is often questionable, leading to variations in the final concentration in feed. Encapsulation has become one of the most popular methods of stabilizing EO during feed processing, storage, and delivery into the lower g

Zinc overload in weaned pigs: tissue accumulation, pathology, and growth impacts.

Zinc oxide (ZnO) is commonly fed to pigs at pharmacologic concentrations (2,000-3,000 ppm) for the first 3 wk post-weaning to increase growth and reduce enteric bacterial disease. The safety of this high-dose treatment is assumed based upon lower bioavailability of ZnO compared to other common forms of Zn in feed; however, limited data are available regarding the specific serum and tissue concentrations of Zn expected in animals experiencing overload following feeding of excessive ZnO. Fifty-five 3-wk-old pigs were divided into 5 groups receiving various concentrations of ZnO (0-6,000 ppm) for…
