White coat hypertension in acute retinal vein occlusion.

PURPOSE: To investigate the association between white-coat hypertension (WCH) and acute retinal vein occlusion (RVO). METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, patients aged 40 years or older diagnosed with acute-phase RVO were included. Patients with other pathologies served as non-RVO controls. Blood pressure (BP) was measured in the office during their initial visit, and information about home BP and hypertension (HTN) medication was obtained through interviews. After 1:2 age and sex-matching between the RVO and non-RVO groups, the proportions of HTN cases were compared. A similar

Altered White Matter Network Topology in Panic Disorder.

Panic disorder (PD) is an anxiety disorder that impairs life quality and social function and is associated with distributed brain regions. However, the alteration of the structural network remains unclear in PD patients. This study explored the specific characteristics of the structural brain network in patients with PD by graph theory analysis of diffusion tensor images (DTI). A total of 81 PD patients and 48 matched healthy controls were recruited for this study. The structural networks were constructed, and the network topological properties for individuals were estimated. At the global lev

Metabolic control by AMPK in white adipose tissue.

White adipose tissue (WAT) plays an important role in the integration of whole-body metabolism by storing fat and mobilizing triacylglycerol when needed. The released free fatty acids can then be oxidized by other tissues to provide ATP. AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a key regulator of metabolic pathways, and can be targeted by a new generation of direct, small-molecule activators. AMPK activation in WAT inhibits insulin-stimulated lipogenesis and in some situations also inhibits insulin-stimulated glucose uptake, but AMPK-induced inhibition of β-adrenergic agonist-stimulated lipolysi

Beyond skin white spots: Vitiligo and associated comorbidities.

Vitiligo is a common depigmentation disorder of an unknown origin characterized by the selective loss of melanocytes, resulting in typical white macules and patches. However, vitiligo is now recognized as more than just a skin disease, what a dermatologist observes as a white spot of skin is just the "tip of the iceberg" of the condition. We attempt to clarify the classification of comorbidities associated with vitiligo from various reviews and reports, and describe their possible pathogenesis. In conclusion, the literature provides evidence of an association between vitiligo and ocular and au

Fibre-specific white matter changes in anorexia nervosa.

A large body of literature exists on white matter (WM) abnormalities in individuals with anorexia nervosa (AN). However, these studies have primarily relied on the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), a technique known for its limited ability to resolve complex WM fibre arrangements. To overcome limitations of DTI, this study employed fixel-based analysis (FBA) to investigate fibre-specific WM abnormalities in AN. FBA, which incorporates information on connectivity and crossing-fibres, offers greater anatomical specificity and interpretability than DTI. Twenty-six acute AN patients and thirty-one h

Association of white mater lesions with orthostatic hypotension.

OBJECTIVE: To reveal the cerebral hypoperperfusion characteristics of White matter lesions (WMLs), we monitored the blood pressure (BP) fluctuation in patients with orthostatic hypotension (OH) and WMLs. METHODS: A total of 2265 syncope patients were enrolled in this retrospective study. Clinical outcomes of brain MRI or CT, tilt test and continuous electrocardiogram monitoring were reviewed. All patients were divided into two groups according to WMLs status, and the WMLs group was further classified into three subgroups according to Fazekas grade (1-3). BP fluctuation in these subgroups was

Insights into White Matter Defect in Huntington's Disease.

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal-dominant inherited progressive neurodegenerative disorder. It is caused by a CAG repeat expansion in the Huntingtin gene that is translated to an expanded polyglutamine (PolyQ) repeat in huntingtin protein. HD is characterized by mood swings, involuntary movement, and cognitive decline in the late disease stage. HD patients often die 15-20 years after disease onset. Currently, there is no cure for HD. Due to the striking neuronal loss in HD, most studies focused on the investigation of the predominantly neuronal degeneration in specific brain regions.

Regional White Matter Scaling in the Human Brain.

Anatomical organization of the primate cortex varies as a function of total brain size, where possession of a larger brain is accompanied by disproportionate expansion of associative cortices alongside a relative contraction of sensorimotor systems. However, equivalent scaling maps are not yet available for regional white matter anatomy. Here, we use three large-scale neuroimaging datasets to examine how regional white matter volume (WMV) scales with interindividual variation in brain volume among typically developing humans (combined N = 2391: 1247 females, 1144 males). We show that WMV scali

Psoriasis Alba (White Psoriasis) of the Perianal Region.

A 40-year-old man presented with pruritic perianal lesions existing for 18 months, accompanied by frequent burning sensation on defecating. He had received oral fluconazole 150 mg weekly for a presumptive diagnosis of candidosis earlier. There was no history of other mucocutaneous lesions or comorbidities. The patient denied any unprotected sexual exposure or having anal intercourse. Examination revealed a well-defined perianal, horseshoe-shaped, white-colored macerated plaque with fissures on the gluteal cleft (Figure 1) with tenderness. Examination of scalp, nail, and oral mucosa was unremar

Structural white matter connectometry of reading and dyslexia.

Current views on the neural network subserving reading and its deficits in dyslexia rely largely on evidence derived from functional neuroimaging studies. However, understanding the structural organization of reading and its aberrations in dyslexia requires a hodological approach, studies of which have not provided consistent findings. Here, we adopted a whole brain hodological approach and investigated relationships between structural white matter connectivity and reading skills and phonological processing in a cross-sectional study of 44 adults using individual local connectome matrix from d

Concussion Disrupts Normal Brain White Matter Microstructural Symmetry.

Injuries and illnesses can alter the normal bilateral symmetry of the brain, and determining the extent of this disruption may be useful in characterizing the pathology. One way of quantifying brain symmetry is in terms of bilateral correlation of diffusion tensor metrics between homologous white matter tracts. With this approach, we hypothesized that the brains of patients with a concussion are more asymmetrical than those of healthy individuals without a history of a concussion. We scanned the brains of 35 normal individuals and 15 emergency department patients with a recent concussion. Frac

Study of carbonyl compounds in white wine production.

Carbonyl compounds, especially acetaldehyde in white wines which have a detrimental effect on the aroma and overall stability of wine, were studied.. Seven wine samples of Grüner Veltliner were produced of one input raw material of grapes, all with different dosage of SO2. The sulfur dioxide was maintained at a fixed level during the maturation process and sampled at six months. The grapes were processed, fermented, aged for three months in stainless steel tanks, prepared for bottling, bottled, and then aged in the bottle. In the samples taken, the volume of acetaldehyde, pyruvate, 2-oxoglutar

Wolff-Parkinson-White Syndrome: A Master of Disguise.

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome is the most common form of ventricular preexcitation and affects 1-3 per 1,000 persons worldwide. Many patients remain asymptomatic throughout their lives; however, approximately half of the patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome experience symptoms secondary to tachyarrhythmias, such as paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia, atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, and, rarely, ventricular fibrillation and sudden death. Patients with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome may present with a multitude of symptoms such as unexplained anxiety, palpitations, fatigue, li

Aberrant white matter microstructure in treatment-resistant schizophrenia✰.

Treatment response in schizophrenia divides into three subcategories: treatment-responsive (first-line responders; FLR), treatment-resistant (TRS), and ultra-treatment-resistant schizophrenia (UTRS). White matter abnormalities could drive antipsychotic resistance but little work has investigated differences between TRS and UTRS. The current study aimed to establish whether differences in white matter structure are present across both treatment-resistant subtypes or if UTRS is distinct from TRS. Diffusion-weighted images were acquired for 18 individuals with TRS, 14 with UTRS, 18 FLR and 20 hea

Broad white matter impairment in multiple system atrophy.

Multiple system atrophy (MSA) is a rare neurodegenerative disorder characterized by the widespread aberrant accumulation of α-synuclein (α-syn). MSA differs from other synucleinopathies such as Parkinson's disease (PD) in that α-syn accumulates primarily in oligodendrocytes, the only source of white matter myelination in the brain. Previous MSA imaging studies have uncovered focal differences in white matter. Here, we sought to build on this work by taking a global perspective on whole brain white matter. In order to do this, in vivo structural imaging and diffusion magnetic resonance imaging

[Wolff Parkinson white syndrome in a young infant].

Wolff Parkinson White Syndrome occurs due to the presence of accessory pathways that abnormally communicate the atria with the ventricles. It is one of the main causes of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia in young people and adolescents, in whom the ideal management is catheter ablation. This syndrome can also occur in younger patients such as neonates and infants, where the therapeutic options are different. We present the case of a 47-day-old patient who was admitted to a public pediatric hospital in Peru due to vomiting. Upon admission, she showed a heart rate of 250 beats per minute;

Preterm white matter injury: ultrasound diagnosis and classification.

White matter injury (WMI) is the most frequent form of preterm brain injury. Cranial ultrasound (CUS) remains the preferred modality for initial and sequential neuroimaging in preterm infants, and is reliable for the diagnosis of cystic periventricular leukomalacia. Although magnetic resonance imaging is superior to CUS in detecting the diffuse and more subtle forms of WMI that prevail in very premature infants surviving nowadays, recent improvement in the quality of neonatal CUS imaging has broadened the spectrum of preterm white matter abnormalities that can be detected with this technique.
