Emissions from Structure Fires: Overview of BHASMA and Results for CO2 and Select Pollutants by Fuel, Combustion Mode, and Scale.

With ∼50 million houses in the US located at the wildland-urban interface (WUI) and wildfire activity on the rise, there is a concern that structure fires might be a key source of air pollutants in WUI regions. We report on structure fire experiments performed as part of the Burning Homes And Structural MAterials (BHASMA) project. More than 70 small-scale experiments were performed on 19 different fuels and fuel complexes, representing lumber, processed wood, insulation, carpet, roofing, electrical sheathing, and flooring. More than 20 large-scale experiments were performed on different sizes

Factors by which global warming worsens allergic disease.

Increased use of fossil fuels has led to global warming with concomitant increases in the severity and frequency of extreme weather events such as wildfires and sand and dust storms. These changes have led to increases in air pollutants such as particulate matter and greenhouse gases. Global warming is also associated with increases in pollen season length and pollen concentration. Particulate matter, greenhouse gases, and pollen synergistically increase the incidence and severity of allergic diseases. Other indirect factors such as droughts, flooding, thunderstorms, heat waves, water pollutio…

A Multi-Model Assessment of the Air Quality and Health Impacts of U.S. Energy Decarbonization.

Net-zero transitions are expected to reduce ambient fine particulate matter (PM2.5) concentrations and the associated mortality burden. The … exploring sensitivity analyses that vary the projected emissions from non-energy activities such as wildfires, we also find that potential future increases in non-energy emissions can offset energy-sector health benefits.

Advancing subseasonal forecasting with machine learning.

Decision-makers rely on weather forecasts to plant crops, manage wildfires, allocate water and energy and prepare for weather extremes1-3. Today, such forecasts enjoy unprecedented accuracy as far as 2 weeks thanks to steady advances in physics-based dynamical models and data-driven artificial intelligence models4-10. However, model skill drops precipitously at subseasonal timescales (2-6 weeks ahead) due to compounding errors, systemic model biases and the chaotic nature of the atmosphere11-15. To counter this degradation, we introduce probabilistic bias correction, a machine learning framewo…

Short-term effects of fine particulate matter from biomass combustion and Saharan dust intrusions on emergency hospital admissions due to mental and behavioural disorders, anxiety and depression in Spain.

Climate change is affecting both the frequency and scale of wildfires, as well as the increase in the number of days with Saharan dust intrusions. Traditionally, studies have focused on the extent to which the increase in fine particulate matter (PM) has had an impact on cardio-respiratory diseases, but (apart from PM) not on how the meteorological and pollution conditions in these situations affect other diseases, such as those linked to mental health. This study therefore sought to ascertain how daily mean PM10, PM 2.5, NO2, O3 concentrations and daily maximum temperature in heat waves influ…

A whole of government approach to extreme weather in King County, Washington.

Extreme weather, exacerbated by climate change, causes significant health and infrastructure impacts nationally. In Washington State, the devastating 2021 heat dome, winter storms and increases in wildfire smoke have highlighted the inequitable impacts of extreme weather as well as the need for comprehensive resilience planning, ranging from near-term emergency management to long-range community and infrastructure planning. King County, in partnership with local communities, non-profit partners and multiple cities, has endeavoured to increase and diversify extreme weather planning and prepared

18-Year Monitoring of the Steno-Endemic Verbascum rupicola (Scrophulariaceae): Compounding Pressures and the Extinction Vortex.

The steno-endemic Verbascum rupicola faces a precarious future due to its extreme habitat specialization on tectonically active hydrothermal quartz veins. This study presents a long-term assessment based on periodic population censuses spanning 18 years (2007, 2016, and 2025) to assess the demographic and spatial trends of its global population in the Tahtalı Dam basin, Türkiye. Field surveys, GIS-based habitat mapping, and controlled pollination experiments were integrated with seed germination kinetics and ex situ cultivation trials. Results reveal a precipitous 69.12% global population decl

Attributing climate-related health burdens in Southeast Asia: a scoping review.

Attributing health outcomes to climate-related exposures is essential for informing adaptive policy, yet Southeast Asia, one of the world's most climate-vulnerable regions, remains critically underrepresented in attribution research. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review of studies linking climate exposures to health burdens in the region. Although growing evidence demonstrates substantial health impacts from air pollution, heat, and extreme weather, the regional research landscape remains critically imbalanced, marked by neglect of other major hazards-including floods, droughts,

The Camp fire and perinatal health: an example of the generalized synthetic control method to identify susceptible windows of exposure.

The November 2018 Camp fire was the most destructive wildfire in California history, but its effects on reproductive health are not known. We linked California birth records from 2017-2019 to daily smoke levels using US EPA Air Quality System (AQS) PM2.5 data and NOAA Hazard Mapping System smoke plume polygons during the Camp fire. In the main analysis, pregnancies were considered exposed if they had median AQS PM2.5 levels above 50 μg/m3 for at least 7 days during November 8-22, 2018. We calculated rates of preterm birth and the infant sex ratio based on week of conception and used the genera

Microscale Spatiotemporal Variation of Reactive Oxygen Species in the Charosphere: Underlying Formation Mechanism and Their Role in CO2 Emission.

Charosphere, a highly active zone between biochar and surrounding soil, is widely present in agricultural and wildfire-affected soils, yet whether reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced within the charosphere remains unclear. Herein, the production and spatiotemporal evolution of charosphere ROS were explored. In situ ROS capture visualized a gradual decrease in ROS production with increasing distance from the biochar/soil interface. Temporally, O2•- and H2O2 contents initially increased and then declined with increasing incubation time, peaking at 3.04 and 5.40 μmol kg-1, respectively, wh

Genomic Investigation of Bacterial Co-Infection in Southern Pudu (Pudu puda) with Fatal Outcome: Application of Forensic Microbiology in Wildlife Impacted by Anthropogenic Disasters.

The southern pudu (Pudu puda) faces significant threats from anthropogenic activities and infectious diseases. Using whole-genome sequencing (WGS) and forensic microbiology research, we describe a triple bacterial co-infection in a southern pudu impacted by wildfire disasters. The deer presented infected burn wounds on the extremities and dog bite wounds in the lumbosacral region, from which a multidrug-resistant CTX-M-1-producing Escherichia coli sequence type (ST) ST224 and a Klebsiella oxytoca ST145 were isolated, respectively. The patient died 13 days after admission in a wildlife rehabili

Detection of airborne Coccidioides spores using lightweight portable air samplers affixed to uncrewed aircraft systems in California's Central Valley.

Coccidioidomycosis is an emerging fungal infection caused by inhalation of Coccidioides spp. spores. While airborne dispersal is critical to Coccidioides transmission, limited recovery of the pathogen from air has hindered understanding of the aerosolization and transport of spores. Here, we examine uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) with portable, active air samplers as a novel means of capturing aerosolized Coccidioides and characterizing emissions and exposure risk. We sampled in September 2023 in eastern San Luis Obispo County, California, in an area with confirmed Coccidioides immitis in soi

Relationships between Particulate Matter, Ozone, and Nitrogen Oxides during Urban Smoke Events in the Western US.

Urban ozone (O3) pollution is influenced by the transport of wildfire smoke but observed impacts are highly variable. We investigate O3 impacts from smoke in 18 western US cities during July-September, 2013-2017, with ground-based monitoring data from air quality system sites, using satellite-based hazard mapping system (HMS) fire and smoke product to identify overhead smoke. We present four key findings. First, O3 and PM2.5 (particulate matter <2.5 μm in diameter) are elevated at nearly all sites on days influenced by smoke, with the greatest mean enhancement occurring during multiday smoke e

Case-Crossover Analysis of Short-Term Particulate Matter and Health Outcomes in Patients With Atrial Fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Residents of western US states face elevated fine particulate matter (PM2.5) exposure from increasingly frequent and intense wildfires, raising concerns about cardiovascular risk. Whether short-term PM2.5 exposure increases odds of hospitalization or emergency care in patients with established atrial fibrillation (AF) remains unclear. METHODS: Using 2021 Medicare data, we identified patients with established AF residing in western US states. Zip code-level daily PM2.5 was estimated using a 1 km2 geospatial model; high PM2.5 was defined as ≥9.0 μg/m3. Odds ratios (ORs) for all-caus…
