Fourteen-year longitudinal study of vascular risk factors, APOE genotype, and cognition: the ARIC MRI Study.

BACKGROUND: Strokes, vascular risk factors, and apolipoprotein E (APOE) genotype are associated with cognitive decline in the elderly, but definitive evidence that these affect cognition as early as middle age is limited. OBJECTIVE: We describe the relationships of APOE genotype, stroke, and vascular risk factors with cognitive change over a 14-year follow-up in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) Study cohort recruited while in middle age. METHODS: Participants included a subset of the ARIC Study who underwent assessments of cognitive function and vascular risk factors. Four cogn

The neural correlates of context retrieval in false recognition.

Previous research has demonstrated that some false recognitions are accompanied by retrieval of contexts in which the corresponding semantic associates were presented during the study phase. What kind of neural processes support context retrieval in false recognition? Using functional MRI (fMRI), we tested the hypothesis that context retrieval in false recognition might be supported by brain areas in the core recollection network which also support context retrieval in true recognition. During the study, lists of semantically associated words were presented together with scene pictures that se

Comparing listening effort among patients with hearing loss combined with tinnitus, hearing loss alone and a control group.

OBJECTIVE: This study compared listening effort (LE) in adults with tinnitus and hearing loss (HL+Tin), hearing loss alone (HL), and a control group (Control). DESIGN AND STUDY SAMPLE: A case-control study involved 78 adults (aged 20-60). Participants underwent pure tone audiometry, the depression, anxiety, stress scale (DASS-21), speech-in-noise test (Quick-SIN), and Stroop test. The Quick-SIN and Stroop tests were taken twice, separately and simultaneously (dual-task paradigm). LE was derived from Stroop test outcomes, measuring selective attention (SA) and reaction time (RT) in dual-task v

Emotional interference in obsessive-compulsive disorder: a neuropsychological study using optimized emotional Stroop test.

Contents related to threat and associated cognitive processes are proposed to be the central characteristic of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) according to 'threat-relatedness hypothesis'. However, evidence for attention bias toward emotionally salient stimuli using the emotional Stroop test is equivocal. This discrepancy could be due to methodological issues, mainly differences in the lexical characters of words. Fifty Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fourth edition (DSM-IV) OCD patients (23 washers and 27 checkers) and 50 age-, handedness- and sex-matched healthy co

Hippocampal volume, spectroscopy, cognition, and mood in patients receiving corticosteroid therapy.

BACKGROUND: Hippocampal volume reduction, declarative memory deficits, and cortisol elevations are reported in persons with major depressive disorder; however, data linking cortisol elevations with hippocampal atrophy are lacking. Prescription corticosteroid-treated patients offer an opportunity to examine corticosteroid effects on hippocampal volume and biochemistry and memory in humans. METHODS: Seventeen patients on long-term prescription corticosteroid therapy and 15 controls of similar age, gender, ethnicity, education, height, and medical history were assessed with magnetic resonance im

Replication of CNTNAP2 association with nonword repetition and support for FOXP2 association with timed reading and motor activities in a dyslexia family sample.

Two functionally related genes, FOXP2 and CNTNAP2, influence language abilities in families with rare syndromic and common nonsyndromic forms of impaired language, respectively. We investigated whether these genes are associated with component phenotypes of dyslexia and measures of sequential motor ability. Quantitative transmission disequilibrium testing (QTDT) and linear association modeling were used to evaluate associations with measures of phonological memory (nonword repetition, NWR), expressive language (sentence repetition), reading (real word reading efficiency, RWRE; word attack, WAT

Radiotherapy-induced neurocognitive decline among adult intracranial tumor patients: A voxel-based approach.

BACKGROUND: Cranial irradiation is a key component of neuro-oncological treatment but can result in cognitive side effects. Preserving cognition from radiotherapy-(RT)-induced toxicity remains an ongoing debate. To spatially map radiotoxic effects in patients who underwent cranial RT, this study applied a voxel-based approach. METHODS: Cognitive assessments (Controlled Word Association (COWA), Hopkins Verbal Learning (HVLT-R), and Trail Making Tests (TMT A,B)) were conducted prospectively before, 6 months and 1 year post-RT in 111 intracranial tumor patients (18-80 years). Reliable change ind

Change in self-reported cognitive symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury is associated with changes in emotional and somatic symptoms and not changes in cognitive performance.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate (a) whether self-reported cognitive symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) are associated with cognitive test performances, and (b) whether improvement in self-reported symptoms from 2 weeks to 3 months after MTBI is associated with improvement in cognitive test performances. METHOD: Patients with MTBI (n = 135), aged 16-59, who initially presented to the emergency department, completed the Rivermead Post Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ), the Brief Symptom Inventory 18, and cognitive tests (i.e., Controlled Oral Word Association, Coding, Rey Auditor

Testing the Specificity of Predictors of Reading, Spelling and Maths: A New Model of the Association Among Learning Skills Based on Competence, Performance and Acquisition.

In a previous study (Zoccolotti et al., 2020) we examined reading, spelling, and maths skills in an unselected group of 129 Italian children attending fifth grade by testing various cognitive predictors; results showed a high degree of predictors' selectivity for each of these three behaviors. In the present study, we focused on the specificity of the predictors by performing cross-analyses on the same dataset; i.e., we predicted spelling and maths skills based on reading predictors, reading based on maths predictors and so on. Results indicated that some predictors, such as the Orthographic D

Effect of Heat Exposure on Cognition in Persons with Tetraplegia.

Individuals with cervical spinal cord injury (SCI) have impaired thermoregulatory mechanisms attributed to interruption of motor, sensory, and autonomic neuropathways. To determine the effects of heat exposure on core body temperature (Tcore) and cognitive performance in persons with tetraplegia, 8 individuals with chronic tetraplegia (C3-C7, American Spinal Cord Injury Association Impairment Scale A-B) and 9 able-bodied controls were acclimated to 27°C at baseline (BL) before being exposed to 35°C for up to 120 min (Heat Challenge). Rectal temperature (Tcore), distal skin temperatures (Tskavg

Hyperhomocysteinemia is associated with cognitive impairment in multiple sclerosis.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) has been associated with cognitive impairment in various neurological diseases. Cognitive impairment occurs early in multiple sclerosis (MS). Conflicting data have been reported regarding plasma total homocysteine (tHcy) levels in MS patients, and the impact of HHcy on cognitive impairment in MS is not known. This study investigated whether plasma total homocysteine levels are increased in MS and if HHcy is associated with cognitive impairment in MS. We compared tHcy levels in 94 patients with MS and 53 healthy age-matched controls. We used a neuropsychological test

Mapping the neural correlates of the effect of psycholinguistic variables on picture naming performance: a FDG-PET study across neurodegenerative diseases.

BACKGROUND: Picture naming performance is influenced by the properties of the stimuli and of the words to be retrieved, such as word length and lexical frequency. Significant inconsistencies, however, remain regarding the brain regions mediating these effects in neurodegenerative patients. In the present study, we addressed this issue by correlating regional cerebral metabolism with several naming-related variables in a large cohort of neurodegenerative patients, who are likely to exhibit naming impairments due to different mechanisms of cognitive dysfunction. METHODS: A total of 178 patients

Associations Between Auditory Working Memory, Self-Perceived Listening Effort, and Hearing Difficulty in Adults With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

OBJECTIVES: Mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) can have persistent effects in the auditory domain (e.g., difficulty listening in noise), despite individuals having normal pure-tone auditory sensitivity. Individuals with a history of mild TBI often perceive hearing difficulty and greater listening effort in complex listening situations. The purpose of the present study was to examine self-perceived hearing difficulty, listening effort, and performance on an auditory processing test battery in adults with a history of mild TBI compared with a control group. DESIGN: Twenty adults ages 20 to 53 ye

MINERVA OPS: A computational framework for the representation and recognition of orthographic, phonological, and semantic associates.

Remembering is constructive. Thus, a complete account of memory must predict patterns in both veridical and false recognition. Ideally, that account will predict the content of what people falsely remember, not just that they falsely remember. To move towards that goal, we need theories of both representation and retrieval as well as an account that joins those two accounts into a cohesive whole. To work towards that goal, Reid and Jamieson Journal of Memory and Language, 129, 104397, (2023) previously modelled false recognition in the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm by importing vectors tha

Demographic, imaging and disease patterns of moyamoya angiopathy in South Auckland: an observational study from electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: Prior reports show the occurrence of moyamoya angiopathy in the ethnically diverse South Auckland region, but little is known about the sociodemographic burden of the condition and clinical outcomes. AIMS: To determine the disease prevalence, age, sex and ethnic distribution, management and patient outcomes in adults residing in South Auckland (population 567 000). We also sought to determine associations with the outcomes of vascular events and functional independence following diagnosis. METHODS: We searched hospital medical records and radiology reports dating from 2008 to 202

Altered functional connectivity of the default mode and dorsal attention network in subjective cognitive decline.

Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) is a clinical condition in which performance on standardized cognitive tests does not indicate impairment like mild cognitive impairment (MCI), but self-experienced cognitive capacity persistently declines. We aimed to explore the functional connectivity (FC) characteristics of SCD subjects compared to healthy controls and MCI patients. Resting-state functional MRI was performed on 152 elderly subjects: 65 normal controls, 62 SCD subjects, and 25 MCI patients. A seed-based FC analysis was performed to compare groups. The major brain regions of the default mod

Does Electrical Status Epilepticus in Sleep Adversely Affect Language in Self-Limiting Focal Epilepsies of Childhood?

INTRODUCTION: The electrical status epilepticus in sleep (ESES) accompanies a wide spectrum of focal and generalized epilepsies, which manifest with cognitive-linguistic regression. Both ESES and language impairment can be seen in self-limited focal epileptic syndromes of childhood (SFEC). The association between the presence of ESES pattern on the EEG and the severity of the language impairment has not been adequately clarified. METHODS: Twenty-eight SFEC cases without intellectual and motor disabilities and 32 healthy children were recruited. Cases with active ESES (A-ESES, n=6) and without

Neuropsychological functioning in children with Tourette syndrome with and without attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Neuropsychological functioning in children with Tourette syndrome (TS) has been characterized by subtle deficits in response inhibition, visual-motor integration, and fine-motor coordination. The association of these deficits with the tics of the TS versus co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has not been well understood because of small sample sizes and lack of adequate control conditions. We examined neuropsychological functioning in relatively large and well-characterized samples of children categorized as TS, TS-plus-ADHD, ADHD, and unaffected controls.
