Lymphatic filariasis is a vector-borne health problem that has been focally endemic in Egypt for centuries. The chief vectors of transmission are Culicinae species. Control measures in the form of mass drug administration of DEC citrate treatment have been implemented in Nile delta for almost a decade. This study aimed to identify the prevalent mosquito species in endemic areas in Giza and Qualioubiya governorates and to monitor Wuchereria bancrofti infection by detecting the parasite DNA in collected mosquitoes. Adult mosquitoes were collected using light traps hung indoors. Microscopic exami…

Ovarian filariasis is an exceptional disease and displays a major diagnostic problem even in endemic areas. We reported the case of a 19-year-old patient who had ovarian cyst which was revealed by chronic pelvic pain. The histological examination of oophorectomy specimen led to the Wuchereria bancrofti filariasis of the ovary. The anatomopathologic examination is required for the diagnosis of this disease.

The inflammatory responses to lymphatic filariae and to Onchocerca volvulus are reviewed with particular attention to evolutionary biology; inflammatory host spectrum; non-specific components; immunoregulation; immune evasion versus immunomodulation; chronic tissue damage and scarring and disease models. Basic principles of pathogenesis are emphasized, comparisons drawn with schistosome infection, and critical items of missing information are highlighted.

We evaluated a monoclonal antibody-based enzyme immunoassay for detecting soluble parasite antigen in sera collected in an area in South India endemic for Wuchereria bancrofti. Filarial antigen was detected in sera from 56 of 57 microfilaremic patients, 9 of 64 aminofilaremic patients with clinical filariasis, and 11 of 70 endemic controls. Antigen was not detected in sera from patients from nonendemic areas who had a variety of other filarial and nonfilarial helminth infections. Parasite antigen titers were significantly correlated with microfilarial counts in night blood smears (r = .64, P l…

Bancroftian microfilarie survived after one to three courses of diethylcarbamazine treatment in carriers and the larvae able to reach the infective stage in Culex p. fatigans. The infection rate and the development of infective larvae per infected mosquito from DEC-treated carriers was much lower than from the untreated carrier. The fact that surving MF can develop to infective stage in their vector indicates that such filarial carriers may be important sources for transmission of filariasis in the endemic areas after suspension of control measures.

The filarial parasite Loa loa overlaps geographically with Onchocera volvulus and Wuchereria bancrofti filariae in central Africa. Accurate information regarding this overlap is critical to elimination programs targeting O. volvulus and W. bancrofti. We describe a case of loiasis in a traveler returning from Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea, a location heretofore unknown for L. loa transmission.

Filariasis due to Wuchereria bancrofti, Brugia malayi and B timori is unevenly distributed in Southeast Asia. While B malayi and B timori infections are seen in the rural areas, W bancrofti is both an urban and rural problem. Control programmes in areas of subperiodic B malayi are complicated by zoonotic transmission mainly from reservoir hosts in some countries. The clinical features and laboratory diagnosis of brugian and bancroftian filariasis are discussed.

We report an interesting case of Bancroftian filariasis diagnosed on fine needle aspiration cytology in a young female hailing from a non-endemic hilly area of India, who presented with a subcutaneous swelling on the left forearm. This is an unusual extra-lymphatic site to harbor filarial infestation and the cytology smears showed adult worms, eggs, and microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti.

Lymphatic filariasis is caused by most commonly Wuchereria bancrofti in India. The diagnosis is made by demonstration of microfilariae in the peripheral blood, body fluids, fine needle aspirates and in bronchial brushings. Presence of microfilariae in the bone marrow is unusual and not been reported frequently. We are reporting here a case of a young male who had pancytopenia and was found to have microfilariae in the bone marrow.

BACKGROUND: Wuchereria bancrofti has been found in almost every tissue except the liver.
CASE: Microfilariae were found in a hemangioma of the liver on fine needle aspiration in a 40-year-old female with pyrexia associated with hepatomegaly and a peripheral blood smear negative for microfilariae.
CONCLUSION: Absence of microfilariae in a peripheral blood smear does not exclude filarial infection.

The archipelago of Vanuatu is located in the South-West Pacific at 2,000 km, East of Australia. The so-called "current" pathology is similar to the one met in Europe. Because of its geographical location, a tropical pathology is to be found with a prevalence of Malaria, intestinal nematodoses and filariases ( Wuchereria bancrofti). Leprosy , dengue, ciguatera, eosinophilic meningitis as well as Tokeleau bring its originality to this pathology.

The lymphatic filarial parasites, Brugia and Wuchereria, continue to present an immunological puzzle, particularly with respect to the development of natural resistance or damaging disease. We have approached this question by examining humoral responses to a few defined antigens of selected interest from these parasites, using sera from each category in the spectrum of filarial disease. Many antigens, such as the major adult surface protein of Mr 29,000 (29K), appear to be recognized at all stages of infection, but two components show interesting patterns of differential recognition. A triplet…

We developed a sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay to detect circulating parasite antigens in human lymphatic filariasis. The assay utilizes a polyclonal rabbit antifilarial antiserum to capture, and a monoclonal antibody to identify, circulating parasite antigen. Using this assay, we found that greater than 95% of sera from microfilaremic donors with bancroftian or brugian filariasis, approximately 60% of sera from microfilaremic patients with hydroceles, chyluria, or elephantiasis, and 15%-20% of sera from asymptomatic residents of filariasis-endemic areas evidently contain filarial a

A New Zealander travelling recreationally to Asia became exposed to Bancroftian filariasis. The traveller had presented incidentally with gastrointestinal illness. In addition to diarrhoea, the traveller's symptoms were non-specific and there was no eosinophilia, lymphoedema, lymphangitis, lymphadenitis, or pain. The immunochromatographic test for Wuchereria bancrofti was positive indicating that there was or had been an adult filarial worm. The illness resolved completely following treatment with ivermectin.

Two cases of pulmonary filariasis with atypical clinical and radiologic features without significant eosinophilia are presented. A diagnosis of pulmonary filariasis could not have been made without bronchial brush cytology, which showed sheathed microfilariae of Wuchereria bancrofti. Both cases responded well to antifilarial treatment, indicating that the microfilariae were not an incidental finding but were responsible for the symptoms and radiologic lesions.

The efficacy of diphenhydramine, an antihistaminic, in preventing adverse reactions to diethylcarbamazine (DEC) in patients infected with Wuchereria bancrofti, was assessed by treating 50 patients with both drugs and 57 with DEC alone. It was found to be ineffective, and to cause drowsiness in all those unaffected by adverse reactions. The authors conclude that the combined use of both drugs for the treatment of Bancroftian filariasis, which is the usual practice in Brazil, should be avoided.

In 14 villages located in the West African savanna belt, 1,305 people were examined for microfilariae in blood and skin. The results indicate that the associations between filariae in infected patients are not the result of chance alone. The frequency of associations between Wuchereria bancrofti and Tetrapetalonema perstans was highly significant, whereas Onchocerca volvulus appeared to be associated with W. bancrofti only in the absence of T. perstans.

Wuchereria bancrofti gravid adult female worms were detected in a mediastinal lymph node in a 76-year old man. The patient also had lung carcinoma. A blood cell counts did not show any eosinophilia, and three consecutive night blood samples were also negative for microfilariae. Filariasis and neoplasm association was purely coincidental. Epidemiological and histopathological aspects of adult filariasis are described.

A 12-month field and laboratory study was carried out to determine the epidemiology, clinical features, and transmission dynamics of bancroftian filariasis in the Igwun Basin, Nigeria. A total of 1,418 individuals (768 males, and 650 females) were examined for clinical signs of filariasis. 690 day provocative blood samples (DPS), and 728 night blood samples (NBS) were examined for microfilaremia. 14.3% of males and 11.1% of females were mf positive. 5.8% of DPS, and 19.5% of the NBS were mf positive. An overall microfilaria rate of 12.8% was recorded in the basin. Prevalence and microfilarial
