The Effects of Yoga on Fall-Related Physical Functions for Older Women: A Systematic Review of Randomized Controlled Trials.

Introduction: The evidence showed that the risk of falls was higher in women, and yoga was considered an effective rehabilitation method for preventing falls. However, there had been no previous attempts to synthesize the evidence specifically for the use of yoga in preventing falls among older women. Objectives: This systematic review aimed to strengthen the existing body of evidence by focusing exclusively on the impact of yoga in improving fall-related physical functions among older women. Methods: A systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines. The protocol was developed…

Effects of Meditation and Yoga on Anxiety, Depression and Chronic Inflammation in Patients with Parkinson's Disease: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

INTRODUCTION: Clinical guidelines recommend a holistic approach to Parkinson's disease (PD) care, yet randomized trials examining mindfulness-based interventions in this context are scarce. This study investigated the effects of two mindfulness practices - meditation and yoga - on biopsychosocial outcomes in PD patients, including anxiety symptoms, depressive symptoms, motor/nonmotor symptoms, health-related quality-of-life (HRQOL), mindfulness, and stress and inflammation biomarkers, compared to usual care. METHODS: 159 participants with a clinical diagnosis of idiopathic PD and a Hoehn and …

Effects of recumbent isometric yoga on the orthostatic cardiovascular response of patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Our previous studies demonstrated that the regular practice of recumbent isometric yoga reduced the fatigue of patients with myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Some patients with ME/CFS have postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS); however, the effects of recumbent isometric yoga on orthostatic cardiovascular responses and whether recumbent isometric yoga improves POTS remain unknown. This pilot study was done to investigate the effect of recumbent isometric yoga on the orthostatic cardiovascular response of patients with ME/CFS. MAIN BODY: Ten a…

Embodied Resilience: A Quasi-Experimental Exploration of the Effects of a Trauma-Informed Yoga and Mindfulness Curriculum in Carceral Settings.

Individuals who are incarcerated likely experience trauma or exacerbate existing trauma, which has significant health risks. Trauma-informed care aims to address the experienced trauma. The current study explored the effect of a trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness curriculum in carceral settings. In this quasi-experimental study, participants (n = 326) were assigned to either six weekly sessions of 60-minute group trauma-informed yoga and mindfulness or a waitlist control condition. Stress and mood were measured pre- and postclass, whereas coping, emotional awareness, emotional regulation, an…

Effect of yoga on balance, falls, and bone metabolism: a systematic review of randomized controlled trials in healthy individuals.

UNLABELLED: This systematic review of 18 RCTs assessed the impact of yoga on balance, fall risk, fear of falling, bone mineral density (BMD), and bone turnover markers in healthy individuals. Yoga significantly improved balance but its effects on BMD were inconclusive. Standardised protocols and longer-term studies are needed. BACKGROUND: Yoga's effects on interconnected bone health parameters viz balance, falls, fear of falling (FOF), bone mineral density (BMD), and bone turnover markers (BTMs) in healthy individuals are unclear. We critically evaluated randomized controlled trials (RCTs) th…

Effect of Yoga and Walking on Glycemic Control for the Management of Type 2 Diabetes: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: A daily habit of yogic practice or walking, along with an oral hypoglycemic agent (OHA) could be beneficial for better control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) to find out the efficiency of yoga or walking on glycemic control in T2DM. METHODOLOGY: The present systematic review and meta-analysis were completed according to the PRISMA guidelines. The risk of bias in included studies was evaluated, by using the revised Cochrane risk-of-bias tool for randomized trials. Meta-analysis was implem…

Yoga as a balance intervention for middle-age and older adults with history of lateral ankle sprain: An exploratory study.

INTRODUCTION: Balance deficiencies are common among aging adults. Musculoskeletal injuries such as lateral ankle sprains (LAS) also contribute to compromised balance; potentially amplifying the postural insufficiencies in these age groups with a history of LAS. Yoga has emerged as an effective balance training intervention for aging adults; but limited application exists in these age cohorts with LAS history. This study may provide important guidance for the implementation of this intervention in these populations. METHODS: In this cohort design study, middle-age and older adults with a histo…

Impact of preference for yoga or cognitive behavioral therapy in patients with generalized anxiety disorder on treatment outcomes and engagement.

There is some, but inconsistent, evidence to suggest that matching patient treatment preference enhances treatment engagement and outcome. The current study examined differential preferences and factors associated with treatment preference for 12-week group cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), yoga, or stress education in 226 adults with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD; 70% female, Mean age = 33 ± 13.5). In a subsample of 165 patients who reported an intervention preference and were randomized to yoga or CBT, we further examined whether match to preferred intervention improved the primary tre…

Effect of Yoga on the Stress, Anxiety, and Depression of COVID-19-Positive Patients: A Quasi-Randomized Controlled Study.

The spread of COVID-19 has resulted in reports of increase in stress, anxiety, and depression across society, especially in people who have tested positive for COVID-19, which affects their mental health and well-being. This article reports a quasi-randomized controlled study conducted in the COVID wards of a hospital to examine the efficacy of add-on yoga intervention in reducing stress, anxiety, and depression in COVID-affected patients under quarantine. The peripheral capillary oxygen saturation level and heart rate of the COVID-19-affected patients were also measured. A total of 62 COVID-1…
