Isotropic proton-density-weighted high-resolution MRI for volume measurement of reconstructed orbital fractures--a comparison with multislice CT.

OBJECTIVE: The cause of enophthalmos as a late complication after orbital reconstruction is poorly investigated. Multislice CT (MSCT) is usually employed for its assessment, in spite of limitations regarding soft tissue depiction/imaging, as well as the implication of radiation and production of artifacts. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to be a valuable alternative. The aim of this study was to establish a bony and soft tissue orbital volume calculation method based on different high-resolution MRI sequences compared to MSCT. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-seven patients were

Deformable registration of brain tumor images via a statistical model of tumor-induced deformation.

An approach to the deformable registration of three-dimensional brain tumor images to a normal brain atlas is presented. The approach involves the integration of three components: a biomechanical model of tumor mass-effect, a statistical approach to estimate the model's parameters, and a deformable image registration method. Statistical properties of the sought deformation map from the atlas to the image of a tumor patient are first obtained through tumor mass-effect simulations on normal brain images. This map is decomposed into the sum of two components in orthogonal subspaces, one represent

Preoperative cross-sectional mapping for deep inferior epigastric and profunda artery perforator flaps.

Perforator flap-based breast reconstruction in a post mastectomy patient requires dissection of the artery-vein bundle (perforators) responsible for perfusion of the subcutaneous fat and skin of the flap. Traditionally, these reconstructions were performed with the transverse rectus abdominis myocutaneous (TRAM) flap, but autologous breast reconstruction using muscle sparing free flaps has become steadily more popular in recent years. Preoperative imaging to locate and evaluate candidate perforators has become an essential step before patients undergo the microsurgical procedure. Preoperative

Wormian bones in a general paediatric population.

UNLABELLED: Wormian bones are small bones that are often found within the sutures and fontanelles of the skull. When a child presents an unexplained fracture or fracture(s), osteogenesis imperfecta is usually suggested when an "abnormally high number" of fractures are seen. PURPOSE: To assess the frequency, number, and topography of wormian bones in a "normal" paediatric population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In a population aged from 0 to 3 years, we retrospectively analysed 605 CT brain scans carried out for a range of indications, excluding cases in which there was a suspicion of constitution

Why most PET of lung and head-and-neck cancer will be PET/CT.

Experience in our and other institutions with PET/CT imaging of lung and head and neck cancers has shown that this new modality has higher specificity and sensitivity than PET alone and in certain settings even when compared to PET and CT viewed side by side. The largest experience exists with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), in which it has been demonstrated that PET/CT is superior to PET and CT in T and in N staging. Superiority in M staging has yet to be demonstrated. CT contrast media enhancement is probably only necessary when a substantial mediastinal tumor component is present. In su

Arthroscopic soft tissue reconstruction in anterior shoulder instability.

Anterior glenohumeral instability remains a difficult problem in the athletic and working patient populations. Treatment strategies are variable and range from nonoperative approaches incorporating immobilization and rehabilitation to surgical management. Surgical decision-making can be challenging, especially with a high-level patient who wishes to return to high-demand activities. Operative options range from open soft tissue stabilization to arthroscopic soft tissue stabilization, with both open and arthroscopic options for bony reconstruction in the setting of clinically significant anteri

An event-based model for disease progression and its application in familial Alzheimer's disease and Huntington's disease.

Understanding the progression of neurological diseases is vital for accurate and early diagnosis and treatment planning. We introduce a new characterization of disease progression, which describes the disease as a series of events, each comprising a significant change in patient state. We provide novel algorithms to learn the event ordering from heterogeneous measurements over a whole patient cohort and demonstrate using combined imaging and clinical data from familial Alzheimer's and Huntington's disease cohorts. Results provide new detail in the progression pattern of these diseases, while c

Diffusion-weighted imaging with dual-echo echo-planar imaging for better sensitivity to acute stroke.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Parallel imaging facilitates the acquisition of echo-planar images with a reduced TE, enabling the incorporation of an additional image at a later TE. Here we investigated the use of a parallel imaging-enhanced dual-echo EPI sequence to improve lesion conspicuity in diffusion-weighted imaging. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Parallel imaging-enhanced dual-echo DWI data were acquired in 50 consecutive patients suspected of stroke at 1.5T. The dual-echo acquisition included 2 EPI for 1 diffusion-preparation period (echo 1 [TE = 48 ms] and echo 2 [TE = 105 ms]). Three neuroradiolo

The initial CT blend sign is not associated with poor patient outcomes after stereotactic minimally invasive surgery.

BACKGROUND: The initial CT blend sign is an imaging marker that has been used to predict haematoma expansion and poor outcomes in patients with small-volume intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH). However, the association of the blend sign with the outcomes of patients undergoing surgery remains unclear. The present study aimed to retrospectively evaluate the influence of the initial CT blend sign on short-term outcomes in patients with hypertensive ICH after stereotactic minimally invasive surgery (sMIS). METHODS: We enrolled 242 patients with spontaneous ICH. The patients were assigned to the blen

Effect of tumor volume on the enhancement pattern of parathyroid adenoma on parathyroid four-dimensional CT.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this study is to assess the effect of tumor volume on the enhancement pattern of parathyroid adenoma (PTA) on four-dimensional computed tomography (4D-CT). METHODS: We analyzed the enhancement patterns of PTA on four-phase 4D-CT in 44 patients. Dependency of the changes of Hounsfield unit values (ΔHU) on the tumor volumes and clinical characteristics was evaluated using linear regression analyses. In addition, an unpaired t test was used to compare ΔHU of PTAs between PTA volume ≥1 cm(3) and <1 cm(3), thyroid gland, and lymph node. RESULTS: PTA volume based on CT
