Clinical effects of methylphenidate and thioridazine in intellectually subaverage children.

Thirty children with subaverage IQs and psychiatric diagnoses of attention deficit disorder and/or or conduct disorder took part in a double-blind study of placebo, methylphenidate, and thioridazine, which were given for 3 weeks each. The results showed a consistent and highly significant effect of methylphenidate in reducing teacher ratings of problem behavior. Parent ratings showed no behavioral effects for the group as a whole. An attentional model of stimulant drug response was used to divide subjects according to a cognitive maturity domain presumed to reflect selective attention. When di…

Adolescents' Neural Processing of Risky Decisions: Effects of Sex and Behavioral Disinhibition.

BACKGROUND: Accidental injury and homicide, relatively common among adolescents, often follow risky behaviors; those are done more by boys and by adolescents with greater behavioral disinhibition (BD). HYPOTHESIS: Neural processing during adolescents' risky decision-making will differ in youths with greater BD severity, and in males vs. females, both before cautious behaviors and before risky behaviors. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: 81 adolescents (PATIENTS with substance and conduct problems, and comparison youths (Comparisons)), assessed in a 2 x 2 design ( PATIENTS: Comparisons x Male:

Physiological and behavioral aspects of stress in adolescence.

Gonadal and adrenal hormone levels appear to be linked to the stressors experienced by young adolescents. Adjustment problems were accompanied by a profile of lower gonadal steroids and higher adrenal androgen levels, primarily androstenedione. Later gonadal maturation may be a result of stress suppressing the reproductive axis. Higher levels of androstenedione may be indicative of chronic levels of stress. However, the findings for androstenedione are complicated by the fact that androstenedione was related to cortisol only in males. Furthermore, androstenedione as a weak androgenic has low p

Risk behaviors for HIV infection. A review of emerging trends.

HIV infection, acquired with the conscious participation of the recipient, is a complex problem of international concern, especially among men who have sex with men. Behaviors emerge such as bareback (intentionally unprotected anal sex between men) and bugchasing (bareback sex when one participant is HIV+ and the other is not). A group of emerging risk behaviors for HIV infection was characterized. A review of the literature in the MEDLINE, Web of Science and regional SciELO databases was performed. HIV-related search terms such as unprotected sex, barebacking/bareback and bug chasing, were us

Impact of physical maltreatment on the regulation of negative affect and aggression.

Physically maltreated children are at risk for developing externalizing behavioral problems characterized by reactive aggression. The current experiment tested the relationships between individual differences in a neural index of social information processing, histories of child maltreatment, child negative affect, and aggressive behavior. Fifty boys (17 maltreated) performed an emotion recognition task while the P3b component of the event-related potential was recorded to index attention allocation to angry faces. Children then participated in a peer-directed aggression task. Negative affect
