Psychogenic nonepileptic seizures are predominantly seen in women: potential neurobiological reasons.

There is a predominance of female gender among patients with psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES). Reasons for this preponderance are not entirely explained in the literature yet. The evidence shows that there exist sex-dependent intrinsic functional connectivity differences in brain areas responsible for emotional and cognitive processing. As a consequence, women and men may differ in vulnerability to physical or emotional trauma. An abnormal connectivity between brain areas involved in emotional processing, cognitive integration systems, motor and premotor regions and/or other related re

Movement-related cortical potentials in paraplegic patients: abnormal patterns and considerations for BCI-rehabilitation.

Non-invasive EEG-based Brain-Computer Interfaces (BCI) can be promising for the motor neuro-rehabilitation of paraplegic patients. However, this shall require detailed knowledge of the abnormalities in the EEG signatures of paraplegic patients. The association of abnormalities in different subgroups of patients and their relation to the sensorimotor integration are relevant for the design, implementation and use of BCI systems in patient populations. This study explores the patterns of abnormalities of movement related cortical potentials (MRCP) during motor imagery tasks of feet and right han

Phosphorylation site dynamics of early T-cell receptor signaling.

In adaptive immune responses, T-cell receptor (TCR) signaling impacts multiple cellular processes and results in T-cell differentiation, proliferation, and cytokine production. Although individual protein-protein interactions and phosphorylation events have been studied extensively, we lack a systems-level understanding of how these components cooperate to control signaling dynamics, especially during the crucial first seconds of stimulation. Here, we used quantitative proteomics to characterize reshaping of the T-cell phosphoproteome in response to TCR/CD28 co-stimulation, and found that dive

Potential mechanisms of sudden unexpected death in epilepsy.

Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) accounts for 15% of all deaths in people with epilepsy and 50% in refractory epilepsy. The underlying mechanisms are not well understood, but seizure-induced cardiac and respiratory arrests are involved. The cardiovascular and respiratory systems are subject to precise reflex regulation to ensure appropriate oxygen supply under a wide range of circumstances. Barosensory and chemosensory afferents project into the nucleus tractus solitarius (NTS), which relays systemic data to higher brain centers for integration of homeostatic responses in heart rate

Large-scale metabolome analysis and quantitative integration with genomics and proteomics data in Mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Systems metabolomics, the identification and quantification of cellular metabolites and their integration with genomics and proteomics data, promises valuable functional insights into cellular biology. However, technical constraints, sample complexity issues and the lack of suitable complementary quantitative data sets prevented accomplishing such studies in the past. Here, we present an integrative metabolomics study of the genome-reduced bacterium Mycoplasma pneumoniae. We experimentally analysed its metabolome using a cross-platform approach. We explain intracellular metabolite homeostasis

Sleep-disordered breathing: effects on brain structure and function.

Sleep-disordered breathing is accompanied by neural injury that affects a wide range of physiological systems which include processes for sensing chemoreception and airflow, driving respiratory musculature, timing circuitry for coordination of breathing patterning, and integration of blood pressure mechanisms with respiration. The damage also occurs in regions mediating emotion and mood, as well as areas regulating memory and cognitive functioning, and appears in structures that serve significant glycemic control processes. The injured structures include brain areas involved in hormone release

Evolution of the Design of a Second Generation FireWire Based Data Acquisition System.

Our laboratory has previously reported on the basic design concepts of an updated FireWire based data acquisition system for depth-of-interaction detector systems designed at the University of Washington. The new version of our data acquisition system leverages the capabilities of modern field programmable gate arrays (FPGA) and puts almost all functions into the FPGA, including the FireWire elements, the embedded processor, and pulse timing and integration. The design is centered around an acquisition node board (ANB) that includes 64 serial ADC channels, one high speed parallel ADC, FireWire

Selective detection of endogenous thiols using microchip-based flow analysis and mercury/gold amalgam microelectrodes.

This paper describes the fabrication and characterization of thin-layer mercury/gold amalgam microelectrodes and their integration with microchip-based flow injection analysis. This microchip platform allows on-chip injection and lysis of erythrocytes followed by selective detection of intracellular glutathione (GSH) at low potentials. The thin-layer gold microelectrodes were amalgamated by electrodeposition of mercury. The electrodes produced a linear response for both GSH and cysteine in flow injection analysis studies utilizing both off-chip and on-chip injection. Comparative experiments us

Illusory conjunctions in simultanagnosia: coarse coding of visual feature location?

Simultanagnosia is a disorder characterized by an inability to see more than one object at a time. We report a simultanagnosic patient (ED) with bilateral posterior infarctions who produced frequent illusory conjunctions on tasks involving form and surface features (e.g., a red T) and form alone. ED also produced "blend" errors in which features of one familiar perceptual unit appeared to migrate to another familiar perceptual unit (e.g., "RO" read as "PQ"). ED often misread scrambled letter strings as a familiar word (e.g., "hmoe" read as "home"). Finally, ED's success in reporting two letter

Serial neuropsychological assessment and evidence of shunt malfunction in spina bifida: a longitudinal case study.

Myelomeningocele is often accompanied by hydrocephalus (MMH), making it a potentially unstable neurological condition requiring shunt placement and possible revisions. Serial neuropsychological assessment is an important tool in monitoring children with MMH, as cognitive changes can indicate shunt malfunction and hydrocephalus. We present the case of a girl with MMH who had five neuropsychological assessments (ages 5, 7, 11, 12, and 14). Despite a lack of overt neurological symptoms or report of behavioral decline, testing at age 11 revealed decline in multiple neurobehavioral domains, and ima

Variability of transcriptional regulation after gene transfer with the retroviral tetracycline system.

Inducible transcription and position-independent expression are critical issues after gene transfer. To gain insight into the amount of variability of transcriptional regulation due to random proviral integration, we analyzed a total of 200 C6 glioma and rat-1 fibroblast clones retrovirally infected with the conventional and reverse tet systems where a luciferase reporter gene was placed under control of a tetracycline-responsive promoter. Repressed luciferase activities differed by up to 81000-fold among individual clones. Repressed activities close to baseline levels were observed in eight c

Latency and duration of the muscle silent period following transcranial magnetic stimulation in multiple sclerosis, cerebral ischemia, and other upper motoneuron lesions.

In muscles with sustained voluntary contraction, EMG activity is transiently inhibited after transcranial magnetic stimulation. We recorded this postexcitatory silent period (SP) at 1.5 times individual stimulus threshold level from the first dorsal interosseus muscle in 65 neurologic patients aged 11 to 80 years. When compared with 20 healthy volunteers and a subgroup of patients with peripheral neurologic conditions not affecting the tested pathways, the SP was significantly longer on the paretic side in cerebral ischemia (p < 0.001) and chronic inflammatory CNS diseases, such as multiple sc

Hydrogel microneedles for chronic wound microenvironment remodeling: from drug delivery to intelligent treatment.

The considerable strain that chronic wounds, including diabetic foot ulcers and pressure sores, place on healthcare systems worldwide is largely attributable to the intricate pathological microenvironment characteristic of these conditions, and conventional therapeutic approaches frequently fall short of desired outcomes, primarily because they cannot effectively disrupt biofilm barriers or adequately adapt to the dynamically changing pathological states involved. Hydrogel microneedles (HMNs) have by contrast emerged as a minimally invasive platform whose distinctive structural features and ma

Multimodal AI for early prediction of adverse clinical outcomes in acute pancreatitis.

BACKGROUND: Conventional clinical scoring systems and contrast-enhanced computed tomography (CECT) interpretation provide limited accuracy in predicting adverse outcomes in early acute pancreatitis (AP). This leads to suboptimal patient management and underscores the need for improved triage methods. To address this, we developed a multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) framework that integrates clinical parameters, radiomics, and deep learning (DL) models to predict adverse clinical outcomes in early AP. METHODS: In this retrospective tertiary-care, imaging-enriched cohort study, patients w

Unlocking the hidden value of food waste: Critical insights into circular biorefineries via enzyme cocktails driven hydrolysis.

The rapid accumulation of food waste worldwide poses significant challenges to conventional waste management strategies. Recent studies have increasingly focused on the valorization of food waste for circular biorefineries. Among the multiple steps involved in biological conversion, e.g. anaerobic digestion, composting, and fermentation, hydrolysis is widely recognized as a critical rate-limiting step as it determines the release of soluble organic substrates and directly influences the efficiency of downstream biorefineries processes. Enzymatic hydrolysis offers advantages in terms of selecti

Toward Family-Centered Patient Portals for Childhood Asthma Management Among Black Primary Caregivers: Qualitative Interview Study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood asthma places substantial burdens on caregivers, particularly in communities facing structural barriers to health care access. Patient portals, the patient-facing component of electronic health record systems, are primarily designed for clinical workflows, limiting their usefulness for caregivers managing their child's asthma. OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aimed to elicit primary caregivers' perspectives on managing childhood asthma and their experiences with patient portals to inform the development of a community-centered and family-centered medical platform. From Pixels to Precision: Generative Artificial Intelligence as a Paradigm Shift in Spine Imaging-Technical Foundations, Clinical Applications, and the Path to Safe Clinical Deployment.

Spine imaging represents a complex diagnostic frontier characterized by anatomical variability, motion artifacts, metallic instrumentation interference, and significant inter-reader diagnostic variability (κ=0.20 across institutions). While conventional discriminative artificial intelligence (AI) models achieve >95% accuracy in detecting degenerative changes, they remain limited by data scarcity, heterogeneous protocols, and poor generalizability. In the spine, these limitations are particularly relevant because clinical decisions can often depend on subtle distinctions (such as differentiatin
