The dengue and yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti, contributes significantly to global disease burden. Genetic study of Aedes aegypti is essential to understanding its evolutionary history, competence as a disease vector, and the effects and efficacy of vector control methods. The prevalence of repeats and transposable elements in the Aedes aegypti genome complicates marker development and makes genome-wide genetic study challenging. To overcome these challenges, we developed a high-throughput genotyping chip, Axiom_aegypti1. This chip screens for 50,000 single-nucleotide polymorphisms prese

Dengue virus infection is a serious public health problem in endemic areas of the world where 2.5 billion people live. Clinical manifestations of the Dengue infection range from a mild fever to fatal cases of hemorrhagic fever. Although being the most rapidly spreading mosquito-borne viral infection in the world, until now no strategies are available for effective prevention or control of Dengue infection. In this scenario, the development of compounds that specifically inhibit viral replication with minimal effects to the human hosts will have a substantial effect in minimizing the symptoms o

Rift Valley Fever virus (RVFV) is an enzootic virus that causes extensive morbidity and mortality in domestic ruminants in Africa, and it has shown the potential to invade other areas such as the Arabian Peninsula. Here, we develop methods for linking mathematical models to real-world data that could be used for continent-scale risk assessment given adequate data on local host and vector populations. We have applied the methods to a well-studied agricultural region of California with [Formula: see text]1 million dairy cattle, abundant and competent mosquito vectors, and a permissive climate th

Insect neuropeptides are the most diverse and important group of messenger molecules that regulate almost all physiological processes, including behavior. In this study, we performed a combination of matrix assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF) and electrospray ionization quadrupole time of flight (ESI-Q-TOF) mass spectrometry to analyze the peptidome of the brain and the neurohemal organs of the Australian sheep blowfly Lucilia cuprina and compared the data with those of related flies such as the gray flesh fly Sarcophaga (=Neobellieria) bullata; the cabbage root fly

Understanding the conditions underlying the proliferation of infectious diseases is crucial for mitigating future outbreaks. Since its arrival in North America in 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) has led to population-wide declines of bird species, morbidity and mortality of humans, and expenditures of millions of dollars on treatment and control. To understand the environmental conditions that best explain and predict WNV prevalence, we employed recently developed spatial modeling techniques in a recognized WNV hotspot, Orange County, California. Our models explained 85-95% of the variation of WNV

IFN-stimulated gene 15 (ISG15), an ubiquitin-like protein, is rapidly induced by IFN-alpha/beta, and ISG15 conjugation is associated with the antiviral immune response. Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), a mosquito-borne neurotropic flavivirus, causes severe central nervous system diseases. We investigated the potential anti-JEV effect of ISG15 over-expression. ISG15 over-expression in human medulloblastoma cells significantly reduced the JEV-induced cytopathic effect and inhibited JEV replication by reducing the viral titers and genomes (p<0.05, Student's t-test); it also increased activation

We are reporting in this paper the control of Anopheles stephensi Liston and Culex quinquefasciatus Say using Bacillus sphaericus. These have been now considered with a practical solution because of its specific and prolonged killing action against mosquito larvae. The efficacy of B. sphaericus were assessed against all instars of A. stephensi and C. quinquefasciatus separately. During the experiments, the mortalities were not found highly effective in dose concentration of LC(90) 0.01 mg/l. It is recommended by the World Health Organizations in all instars of larvae of A. stephensi and C. qui

Between January 2002 and December 2004, a population-based study on the effects of climate and mosquito indices on the incidences of dengue fever (DF) and dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF) was conducted in Trinidad, West Indies. The incidence of DF was 5.05 cases/1000 population in 2002, largely as the result of a major outbreak, but declined to 0.49 case/1000 in 2004. The monthly Aedes aegypti (L.) Breteau indices (BI) did not decline over the 3-year study period, however, but increased from a mean of 29 in 2002 to one of 36 in 2004, with seasonal variations (BI of 30-46 and 20-34 were recorded

An endogenous meiotic drive system was previously reported to be segregating in the yellow fever mosquito Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) population in Trinidad. The meiotic driver (M(D)) is tightly linked to the male determining locus and selectively targets sensitive responders linked to the female determining allele, causing fragmentation of female gametes. This results in highly male-biased progeny. The M(D) system was initially studied as a genetic tool for population control with limited success, but recently interest has focused on its potential for population replacement. This st

Japanese encephalitis (JE) vaccine is widely used in Asia for childhood immunizations, but the vaccine is also used for travellers to Asia from other parts of the world. In Denmark, more than 400,000 doses have been distributed from Statens Serum Institut since 1982. In 1989, the first allergic mucocutaneous reactions after JE vaccination were registered in Denmark and, although the number of reactions have decreased since 1992, reactions are still observed. No explanation of these reactions have been found. The present case-control study, including 49 travellers with allergic reactions and 14

Twenty-one villages from ten provinces and one autonomous region with different mf rates in population and different levels of mean mf density per 60 microliters blood in positive cases and representative species of filaria and vector after DEC treatment were selected as study sites. In these villages a longitudinal investigation for a period of 3-5 years was carried out without adopting any control measure. The main results were: 1. Among 279 residual microfilaremia cases, 235 (84.2%) turned negative spontaneously and successively. The negative conversion rates were 86.6% (46/53) in malayan c

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the relationship between allergic rhinitis and risk factors in the environment which promote aeroallergenic exposures, but knowledge of these are of practical importance from the point of view of community prevention.
METHOD: A cross-sectional population-based study of 2868 adults aged 20-74 years was carried out. Allergic rhinitis was defined as the self-reported presence, in the previous year, of usual nasal blockage and discharge apart from colds or the flu, provoked by allergens, with or without conjunctivitis.
RESULTS: Allergic rhinitis was reporte

There is growing interest in using avermectins in livestock as a vector control tool for mosquitoes involved in the transmission of human malaria in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). If implemented, the potential health and productivity impacts across the livestock sector would need to be considered, as avermectins are already commonly used in veterinary medicine to treat gastrointestinal helminths and parasitic insects. Here we present the results of a restricted systematic review that summarizes what is known about the effects of avermectins on cattle and swine productivity in SSA and the presence o

Malaria is a potentially life-threatening parasitic disease caused by a protozoal infection via Plasmodium species, transmitted by a carrier female Anopheles mosquito. Cerebral malaria is typically caused by Plasmodium falciparum and is known as a fatal neurological complication of malaria. This systematic review and meta-analysis was performed due to limited research on the comparison of artemether and quinine for the treatment of cerebral malaria in children. Several electronic databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus) were searched from inception to February 2023. Additionally, risk

Patrick Manson, a physician-scientist who worked in China between 1866 and 1889, made significant discoveries about the transmission of tropical infectious diseases. He identified that many such diseases require a vector, unique to warmer climates, to facilitate human-to-human transmission. Manson demonstrated that microfilariae have nocturnal periodicity in the blood of patients with elephantiasis. He showed that these microfilariae undergo transformation on ingestion by mosquitoes, which act as vectors to complete their life cycle. By observing operculated eggs in the sputum samples, Manson

Dengue fever, caused by the dengue virus and transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, poses a significant global health threat, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. Severe cases can manifest as dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF) or dengue shock syndrome, leading to complications such as plasma leakage, fluid accumulation, respiratory distress, severe bleeding, and organ impairment. Among these complications, gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is particularly concerning due to its potential to rapidly deteriorate the patient's condition. While endoscopic hemostasis is an effective intervention for

Heterozygous carriers of haemoglobin S and C (HbAS and HbAC) have a reduced risk of severe malaria but are not protected from Plasmodium falciparum infection, suggesting that the protection involves acquired immunity. During a blood meal, female Anopheles mosquitoes inject saliva that can elicit a host antibody response, which can serve as a proxy for exposure to Plasmodium infection. Previous studies have shown that the peptide gSG6-P1 of An. gambiae saliva is antigenic and highly Anopheles specific. Here, we used plasma samples from 201 Ghanaian children with wild-type haemoglobin (HbAA), Hb

Since its first detection in 2012 in Djibouti, Anopheles stephensi has invaded and established in the Horn of Africa, and more recently Nigeria. The expansion of this vector poses a significant threat to malaria control and elimination efforts. Integrated vector management is the primary strategy used to interrupt disease transmission; however, growing insecticide resistance is threatening to reverse gains in global malaria control. We present a next-generation amplicon-sequencing approach, for high-throughput monitoring of insecticide resistance genes (ace1, GSTe2, vgsc and rdl), species iden

Dengue virus (DENV) is an arbovirus that comprises four antigenically different serotypes. Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) acts as the principal vector for DENV transmission, and vector control is crucial for dengue fever epidemic management. To design effective vector control strategies, a comprehensive understanding of the insect vector and virus interaction is required. Female Ae. aegypti ingests DENV during the acquisition of a blood meal from an infected human. DENV enters the insect midgut, replicates inside it and reaches the salivary gland for transmitting DENV to healthy humans dur
